If you want richer watch-face customization and alerts, CARROT Weather is the strongest third-party upgrade. Weathergraph is best for visual, hour-by-hour planning; Hello Weather offers the cleanest provider-flexible interface; and Windy is the specialist choice for wind, sailing, aviation, and map-based analysis.
The right app depends less on how many meteorological numbers it lists than on what appears on your watch face, how alerts and radar work in your region, how often information refreshes, and which features require a subscription.
Quick picks
| App | Best for | Watch and complication strengths | Alerts and radar | Paid requirement | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Weather | Most people; no-cost simplicity | Native Apple Watch app, Smart Stack, standard complications, hourly and 10-day forecasts | Severe-weather support where available; regional precipitation information | None | Less customizable and specialized |
| CARROT Weather | Best overall third-party app | Large range of data-point and combined complications; background updates | Paid-tier precipitation, lightning, storm-cell alerts and maps; higher tiers add U.S. radar features | Most useful Watch features require Premium or Premium Ultra | Subscription cost and deliberately humorous interface |
| Weathergraph | Visual hourly forecasting | Graphical complications for temperature, rain, wind, clouds, sunshine, UV and more | Rain alerts up to 60 minutes ahead according to its listing; cached forecasts up to 24 hours | Features and pricing vary; a Weathergraph Forever purchase was listed at $99.99 | Graphs can be difficult to read at a glance |
| Hello Weather | Clean interface and provider choice | Apple Watch app and complications in Pro | Radar and precipitation, severe-weather and forecast notifications in Pro | Free tier; Pro required for Watch and advanced features | Current U.S. Pro price is not established here |
| Windy | Wind, aviation, sailing and weather maps | Specialist Watch support and compatible complications | Wind-focused maps; radar is described as beta in its Watch guide | Current pricing not established | Less convenient for a simple everyday glance |

What matters in an Apple Watch weather app
Complications that answer a question quickly
A good complication should show the information you actually need without forcing you to open the app. Apple’s native options include conditions, temperature, rain, wind, UV index, humidity and air quality. Some third-party apps add forecast timelines, combined data points, sunrise and sunset, or custom layouts. Check whether a complication is readable in its intended size and whether tapping it opens a useful screen rather than just a generic app launch.

Apple explains complication setup and the weather metrics available at its complication guide.
A real Watch app versus an iPhone companion
An App Store listing can say an app supports Apple Watch while the most useful work still happens on the iPhone. Confirm whether the Watch app can retrieve data independently, what is cached, and what requires Wi-Fi, cellular service or the iPhone nearby. A complication may display its last successful update even when live radar or alerts are unavailable.
Refresh behavior and battery settings
Weather complications are not continuous live dashboards. Refresh timing depends on watchOS scheduling, the active complication, background-refresh permissions, location access, network conditions, subscription level and battery settings. Apple notes that complications on the active face can continue refreshing even when general Background App Refresh is disabled, while Low Power Mode can delay notifications and restrict connections. See Apple’s battery guidance. No app in this comparison has a published, independently measured battery advantage.
Alerts, radar and nowcasting are different
- Radar shows observed precipitation moving toward you.
- Nowcasting extrapolates very near-term conditions, often from radar.
- Forecast models estimate conditions hours or days ahead.
- Alerts may be triggered by a forecast probability, radar estimate or provider-specific threshold.
Radar can be more useful than a generic rain percentage when deciding whether to leave now, but coverage varies by country. App alerts do not replace government emergency systems. Apple describes regional government and extreme-weather alerts at its safety-alert page.
Data sources and privacy
Multiple providers can be useful because performance differs by geography and metric, but more choice also means more setup. Hello Weather and Weathergraph market privacy positions such as no ads, tracking or data sharing; those are vendor claims, not an independent audit. You can often reduce location sharing by selecting a city manually, although local alerts and conditions may become less precise.

Apple Weather: best free and built-in option
Apple Weather remains the sensible default. On supported devices and locations it provides current conditions, temperature, precipitation, wind, UV index, visibility, humidity, air quality, hourly forecasts, 10-day forecasts and severe-weather alerts. It integrates with watch faces and the Smart Stack without another account or subscription. Apple documents these capabilities at the Apple Watch Weather guide and its watchOS feature page.
Use Apple Weather when you mainly need temperature, rain probability and a quick forecast. Its limitations are deliberate: it offers less complication customization than CARROT, less graphical planning than Weathergraph, less provider selection than Hello Weather and fewer specialist wind tools than Windy. Weather and severe-alert availability also varies by location.
Set the default city
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Weather.
- Tap Default City and select a location.
The selected city controls what weather complications display. Apple lists this path at its locations guide.

CARROT earns the best overall third-party recommendation for readers who treat the watch face as their primary weather interface. It supports a broad set of complications, background updates, multiple data sources, customization, alerts and maps. Its support documentation describes individual data-point complications and custom combinations, although the exact catalog can change.
Premium adds additional providers, notifications, precipitation and weather alerts, lightning notifications where available, widgets, Watch complications, background updates, maps and customization. Premium Ultra adds features including storm-cell notifications where available, individual U.S. radar stations, a maps widget, quick source switching, U.S. super-resolution radar and multi-model forecasts. Details are listed in CARROT’s support documentation and its product page.

Price and trade-offs
The U.S. App Store listing crawled in August 2026 showed Premium at $19.99 annually or $4.99 monthly, and Premium Ultra at $39.99 annually or $9.99 monthly, alongside other displayed purchase options. Promotions, taxes and regional prices can differ, so the App Store listing at the time of purchase is the final authority.
CARROT is a poor fit if you only need temperature, dislike subscriptions or find its humor distracting. Radar, lightning and storm-cell coverage is also geography-dependent, and more configuration can make setup less immediate.

Weathergraph: best visual forecast
Weathergraph turns the forecast into a timeline: temperature curves, rain and snow bars, wind speed and direction, cloud cover, sunshine, UV, pressure trends, heat index, sunrise and sunset, twilight, dew point and comfort information. Its large graphical complications are particularly useful for runners, cyclists, hikers, skiers and anyone deciding which part of the day is suitable for an activity.
The listing describes forecasts from sources including Apple Weather, Rainbow.ai, Foreca, Open-Meteo, Pirate Weather and yr.no; its site also mentions NWS data for U.S. users. Availability can depend on country and plan. It advertises forecast caching for up to 24 hours and rain alerts up to 60 minutes ahead. See the App Store listing and Weathergraph’s site.
A Weathergraph Forever purchase was listed at $99.99 in an App Store result, but the available information does not establish the complete current subscription structure or what that purchase includes. Verify the in-app purchase screen before paying. Graphs also demand more attention than a simple number, and cached data is not live radar or emergency monitoring.

Hello Weather: best clean, flexible alternative
Hello Weather is aimed at readers who want a calm interface and the ability to compare providers. Its free tier includes simple forecasts, automatic themes, custom units, real-time precipitation estimates and basic radar. The listing says it has no ads; its privacy and no-tracking positioning should be understood as a developer claim.

Pro adds the Apple Watch app and complications, precipitation and severe-weather notifications, future-forecast notifications, additional providers such as AccuWeather, Foreca, OpenWeather, Pirate Weather, The Weather Company, Tomorrow.io, Visual Crossing, Weatherbit and Xweather, plus radar animation and additional customization. Air-quality and pollen features depend on the selected source and location. Details are in the current U.S. App Store listing.
The free download does not include the Watch experience or advanced features. A reliable current U.S. Pro price was not exposed by the available listing, so check the subscription screen before purchase. Hello Weather is the strongest choice for a clean alternative to CARROT’s personality-heavy design, but provider selection can overwhelm casual users.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windy: best for wind and specialist maps
Windy is the specialist pick for sailors, pilots, kite surfers, wind-sensitive athletes and weather enthusiasts who compare models and maps. Its Apple Watch guide describes wind-focused information, favorite METAR-location synchronization through iCloud, radar support identified as beta, and complications on compatible models. The guide says complications require Apple Watch Series 4 or later; recheck compatibility against the current listing because requirements can change.
Read the feature and compatibility details at Windy’s Apple Watch guide. Windy is less convenient than Apple Weather or CARROT for a quick everyday glance, and its map-heavy strengths are more apparent on the iPhone. Current pricing was not established by the available information.

Which app should you choose?
- Choose Apple Weather for a free, integrated temperature and precipitation check.
- Choose CARROT for the most capable complications, customization, alerts and radar on the Watch.
- Choose Weathergraph when seeing the entire day as a visual timeline matters more than a minimal interface.
- Choose Hello Weather Pro for a clean design and multiple provider options without CARROT’s humor.
- Choose Windy when wind, aviation, sailing or map analysis is the reason you bought a weather app.
How to add a weather complication
- Display the watch face and touch and hold the screen.
- Tap Edit, then swipe left to the complication screen.
- Tap a complication position.
- Turn the Digital Crown to select Apple Weather or an installed weather app and metric.
- Press the Digital Crown to save, then tap the watch face to apply it.
Apple documents the same procedure at its complication guide.
Why a weather complication is not updating
- Confirm the app is installed on the Watch as well as the iPhone when required.
- On the Watch, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and enable location. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Weather and allow access. Apple’s permissions documentation is at this guide.
- Check Background App Refresh, network access, the selected location and the app’s subscription status.
- Make sure Low Power Mode is not delaying updates or notifications.
- Put the complication on the active watch face; inactive faces do not receive the same refresh behavior.
- Check that your iOS, watchOS and Apple Watch model meet the app’s current requirements.
Fix missing notifications
On iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > Notifications, select the weather app and choose its notification behavior. Apple normally routes a notification to either the iPhone or Apple Watch rather than both, depending on whether the iPhone is unlocked and whether the Watch is locked. See Apple’s notification guidance.
Accuracy, regional coverage and safety caveats
No app can be called universally “most accurate” without location-specific testing. Provider performance changes with geography, terrain, forecast horizon and metric. CARROT’s advanced radar features include U.S.-specific capabilities; Hello Weather’s sources, air quality and pollen depend on provider and location; Apple severe-weather alerts are not available everywhere; and Windy’s METAR tools are most relevant to specialist users.
A rain alert may be a model estimate, radar extrapolation or a provider threshold. It can arrive late or fail when connectivity is unavailable. Use official government emergency alerts for warnings that affect safety; app notifications are supplementary.
