If your keyboard has an Eject key, press it (try Fn or Fn Lock if necessary). Otherwise, press Windows + E, open This PC, select the CD/DVD drive, press Shift + F10, choose Eject, and press Enter. Windows + E opens File Explorer; it does not eject the disc by itself.
Try the keyboard’s Eject key first
Some desktop keyboards, laptops and Apple keyboards used with Windows have a key marked Eject or a triangle above a line. Press it once. If nothing happens, try the key with Fn or check the computer or keyboard manual. Microsoft’s standard Windows shortcut list does not define one universal eject combination, so the key and its behavior depend on the hardware.
Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference lists no standard command that ejects every optical drive.
Open the drive from Windows using only the keyboard
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- If Explorer opens to Home or Quick access, navigate to This PC.
- Use Tab, Shift + Tab and the arrow keys to highlight the physical CD/DVD drive.
- Press Shift + F10 to open the same context menu as a right-click.
- Use the arrow keys to select Eject, then press Enter.
The exact number of Tab presses varies with Windows version, Explorer layout and accessibility settings. The dependable part is selecting the optical-drive icon and using Shift + F10 → Eject. A tray-loading drive should extend; a slot-loading drive should release the disc.

If keyboard navigation is inconvenient, use the mouse-assisted route: press Windows + E, open This PC, right-click the CD/DVD drive and select Eject. Microsoft describes this as the normal software alternative when the front-panel button is unavailable (Microsoft Q&A; HP Support).
Create a permanent keyboard shortcut with PowerShell
This Windows-native method is useful if you eject discs frequently. First verify the optical drive’s letter in This PC. The example uses D:; replace it if your drive is E:, F: or another letter.

Save an eject script

$item.InvokeVerb('Eject')- Open Notepad and paste the script.
- Change
D:to the correct optical-drive letter. - Save the file as
Eject-CD.ps1. Set Save as type to All files, not Text Documents. - Test it by right-clicking the file and choosing Run with PowerShell, if that option is available.
The script uses the Windows Shell drives namespace (17) and invokes the drive’s Eject verb. Microsoft documents this behavior in FolderItem.InvokeVerb and documents PowerShell COM-object use in Creating .NET and COM objects in PowerShell.
Turn the script into a hotkey
- Create a desktop shortcut to the script.
- Use a target similar to
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:UsersYourNameDesktopEject-CD.ps1", changing the path to the actual file location. - Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and open the Shortcut tab.
- Click the Shortcut key field, press the desired combination, then select Apply and OK.
-ExecutionPolicy Bypass applies only to that invocation; do not broadly disable PowerShell security settings. Windows may reserve some combinations, and the shortcut must remain on the desktop or in another location Windows can access.

Short one-line command
(New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application).Namespace(17).ParseName('D:').InvokeVerb('Eject')This is convenient but assumes D: exists and is recognized. It can fail when the drive is absent, virtual, inaccessible or assigned another letter, and it is a Windows PowerShell technique rather than a universal computer shortcut.
When Eject is missing or does nothing
- Close media players, disc-burning programs, installers and Explorer windows using the disc. Wait for the disc to stop spinning, then retry.
- Restart Windows and try the File Explorer command again.
- Check This PC. If no optical drive appears, a keyboard command cannot operate it.
- Open Device Manager and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. A warning icon indicates a detection, driver or configuration problem.
- For a USB drive, check its power adapter, reconnect the cable and try a functioning USB port rather than an unreliable hub.
- Make sure you selected a physical optical drive, not a virtual drive created by ISO-mounting software.
Microsoft’s CD/DVD recognition guidance covers Device Manager and driver troubleshooting. Registry-filter repairs are a later diagnostic step; incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems and affect disc-burning software, so do not begin there.

If the tray is physically stuck
- Close applications using the disc and retry Eject.
- Restart Windows and try once more.
- If the drive is tray-loading and has an emergency-release pinhole, shut down the computer.
- Straighten a paper clip and gently press it into the pinhole until the tray releases, then pull the tray out carefully.
Use the pinhole only when the particular drive provides one. Do not insert a paper clip into the disc slot, force the tray, or use the manual release while the disc is spinning unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. A bent tray, grinding noise or repeated failure usually calls for drive replacement. See Microsoft Q&A’s emergency-release guidance and HP’s stuck-tray instructions.
Tray-loading and slot-loading drives are different
Tray-loading
A motorized tray extends from the drive. It normally has a front eject button and often an emergency-release pinhole.

Slot-loading
The disc enters a narrow slot, so there is no tray to open and usually no pinhole. “Open the drive” means ejecting the disc through Windows, a keyboard eject key or a model-specific control. Consult the manufacturer’s manual if no drive icon or eject control appears.
External USB optical drives
Once Windows recognizes a USB CD/DVD drive and assigns it a letter, the same File Explorer and PowerShell methods generally apply. Some portable drives need separate power, and USB hubs can cause intermittent detection. Reconnect the drive if it disappears.
Ejecting the disc is not the same as safely disconnecting the entire USB device. After ejecting the disc, use Windows’ Safely remove hardware command before unplugging the drive; Microsoft explains the distinction in Safely remove hardware in Windows.
If the computer has no optical drive
Many current laptops omit internal CD/DVD hardware. If no physical drive appears in Device Manager, the keyboard cannot open one. An external USB CD/DVD drive is the practical replacement; check Windows compatibility, USB-power requirements, tray versus slot loading, and whether you need disc writing as well as reading.
