How to Fix “The Installation Failed to Start” in Malwarebytes for Windows

Restart Windows, run a fresh local Malwarebytes installer, and check internet, firewall, antivirus, VPN, permissions, storage, and compatibility issues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Malwarebytes displays “The installation failed to start. Please try running the installer again,” restart Windows, confirm that you are online, download a fresh installer, save it to the computer’s local drive, and run it again. Malwarebytes identifies unreliable internet access, third-party antivirus interference, and firewall rules as the main causes of this startup failure. These instructions apply to Malwarebytes Desktop Security version 5 on Windows, not macOS.

Official guidance: Malwarebytes’ error article and its Windows installation troubleshooting guide.

What this message means

The downloaded Malwarebytes program could not begin the installation process. It does not by itself prove that Malwarebytes is incompatible with your PC, that the download is corrupt, or that the computer is infected. The installer may need to contact Malwarebytes, pass through security controls, and write to protected Windows locations before setup can start.

Other messages require different remedies. Malwarebytes separately documents errors for network-drive execution, insufficient disk space, insufficient permissions, unsupported Windows versions, unsupported CPU or hardware architecture, and generic installation failure. See the Windows error-message reference if your wording differs.

Try these fixes in order

1. Restart and retry once

  1. Close the error dialog.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. After signing in, run the Malwarebytes installer again.

A restart can clear a locked file or a pending Windows operation. If the installer specifically requests a restart, choose it immediately; Malwarebytes says setup should launch automatically afterward. Do not manually start the app during that stage. A repeated restart loop is a reason to stop retrying and contact Support.

2. Download a fresh installer locally

Download Malwarebytes again from its official website rather than repeatedly opening the same file. The quick-start guide identifies the consumer installer as MBsetup.exe. Save it in a local folder such as Downloads, then run it from the computer’s internal drive.

  • Do not launch the file directly from a network share or mapped network drive.
  • Copy an installer from removable or remote storage to the local drive before opening it.
  • Use only an official Malwarebytes download, not a third-party mirror.

Malwarebytes explicitly requires the installer to be run locally: quick-start instructions.

3. Verify internet, VPN, and proxy access

Test a normal website, then temporarily disconnect a VPN and disable a manually configured proxy if you use one. Browsing can appear to work while a VPN or proxy prevents the installer from reaching Malwarebytes. On a company, school, or other managed network, ask the administrator whether Malwarebytes traffic is blocked.

According to Malwarebytes’ current guide, the firewall should permit ark.mwbsys.com over TCP port 443. Ask an administrator to create or verify that narrowly scoped rule rather than opening unrelated ports.

4. Check third-party antivirus or endpoint protection

Another antivirus or endpoint-security product may quarantine or block the installer without showing a Malwarebytes-specific warning. Identify the security product, then pause its protection only if necessary for a single diagnostic attempt and only through its own controls. Run the installer once, immediately re-enable protection, and review the vendor’s approved allow-list process if the installation succeeds.

Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled, particularly on an untrusted network. Malwarebytes lists temporary third-party antivirus disabling as a troubleshooting measure: official guide.

5. Check Windows version and architecture

Repeated downloads cannot fix an unsupported system. Malwarebytes’ current Windows guide says Windows 8.1 and earlier must be upgraded before downloading the app. Its error reference also identifies unsupported Windows versions, unsupported CPU or hardware architecture (including some ARM configurations), and missing Windows security updates as separate installation blockers.

  • Install available Windows updates and restart.
  • Confirm the Windows edition, version, and system type in Settings > System > About.
  • If the computer fails the compatibility check, use a supported device or ask Malwarebytes Support for guidance.

6. Resolve Microsoft’s verified-app restriction

If Windows shows “The app you’re trying to install isn’t a Microsoft-verified app,” that is a Windows app-source restriction, not proof that Malwarebytes is malicious and not the same error as installer startup failure. Select Change my app recommendation settings, open Apps & Features (wording varies by Windows build), and set Choose where to get apps to Anywhere. Organization-managed PCs may prevent this change; contact IT instead of bypassing policy.

7. Check administrator rights and free space

A standard account may not be allowed to write to protected folders or registry locations. On a personal PC, sign in with an administrator account or approve the normal Windows elevation prompt. On a work or school device, ask the administrator to perform the installation.

Check free space on the system drive. For an upgrade, keep the existing installation location; Malwarebytes says most users use C:Program FilesMalwarebytes. To change location, uninstall the existing app first. Do not manually delete Malwarebytes folders or registry entries as a first-line fix.

8. Consider what was installed before

Tell first installations apart from upgrades, reinstalls, failed updates, and moves to another drive. A corporate Malwarebytes product, unsupported legacy version, or incompatible Malwarebytes component can block the consumer application. If the previous installation will not uninstall normally, avoid registry cleaners and undocumented command-line scripts; use Malwarebytes Support.

Message or condition Next action
Installer cannot be run from a network drive Copy the installer to a local Windows drive and run it there.
Not enough free disk space Free space on the system drive, then retry.
Insufficient permissions Use an administrator account or contact IT.
Unsupported Windows version or CPU architecture Update or use a supported computer; repeated retries will not resolve compatibility.
Microsoft-verified-app warning Change Choose where to get apps to Anywhere, if policy permits.
“An error has occurred and Malwarebytes will not install on your computer” Submit a Malwarebytes Support request.

These classifications come from Malwarebytes’ error reference.

When to contact Malwarebytes Support

Escalate after a fresh local installer still fails following a restart and the network, security-software, VPN/proxy, firewall, permissions, storage, update, and compatibility checks. Contact Support especially when:

  • the device is managed by an employer or school;
  • the installation path is reported as invalid;
  • a previous Malwarebytes installation cannot be removed;
  • firewall or endpoint-security policy cannot be changed;
  • the computer fails architecture or Windows-version checks; or
  • you receive the generic installation-failure message.

Include the exact error text, Windows edition and version, whether this is a first install, upgrade, or reinstall, whether the device is managed, whether antivirus or a VPN/proxy was active, where the installer was stored, and any error code. Use the support route linked from Malwarebytes’ error-reference page.
