If it happens while the phone is untouched, suspect an unintended touch from a case, screen protector, moisture, charger, app, or display problem instead.
Start by testing the iPhone flat on a table, unplugged, with the case and screen protector removed and the display clean and dry. This sequence checks the most common causes without erasing personal data.
First, identify which kind of “scrolling to the top” you have
A tap near the status bar
iOS can move a scrollable page, feed, message thread, or document to the beginning when you tap the status-bar area at the very top of the display. Apple documents this UIKit behavior as the scroll-to-top gesture: a status-bar tap scrolls a scroll view to the top.
That area includes the clock and, depending on the model, the notch or Dynamic Island. It is normal when the jump follows contact there, and apps may implement scrolling differently or disable the behavior for their own scroll views.

A jump with no apparent touch
If the screen moves while you are holding the phone away from its top edge—or while it is lying untouched—investigate unintended touches, accessories, software, or the display itself.
Only one app returns to the beginning
An individual app may have refreshed, relaunched, or failed to preserve its previous position. That is different from the whole iPhone registering touches incorrectly.
Other controls activate by themselves
Scrolling that continues, buttons that activate, apps that open, or text that appears without typing is broader “ghost touch” behavior. Treat it as a possible display or software fault, especially if it occurs in Settings as well as other apps.

Is there an iPhone setting that disables scroll-to-top?
Apple documents the gesture and gives developers controls for their scroll views, but the cited iPhone settings documentation does not provide a consumer-facing “Disable Scroll to Top” switch. Haptic Touch, Reachability, and unrelated display settings should not be presented as controls for this gesture.
You can test Touch Accommodations if brief grazes or repeated touches are the trigger. These settings change how taps and swipes are interpreted; they do not directly remove the status-bar gesture.
Quick fixes that preserve your data
- Test the phone on a table. Open Safari, Messages, Settings, and another app. If the behavior disappears when you stop holding the phone, your fingers, palm, or case may be reaching the top edge.
- Remove the case and screen protector temporarily. Check for a raised edge, misalignment, trapped moisture, cracks, or pressure near the top. Apple recommends removing cases and protectors when a display is overly sensitive or responds intermittently: Apple’s touchscreen troubleshooting steps.
- Clean and dry the display. Remove water, sweat, lotion, oil, and debris. Do not test through a wet screen or with wet gloves.
- Disconnect every wired accessory. Unplug Lightning or USB-C cables, hubs, and chargers. Test on battery power, then try a different reputable cable, power adapter, and outlet if the issue occurs only while charging. Apple includes disconnecting accessories in its display troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart the iPhone. A normal restart can clear a temporary input or app state. If the phone is frozen or behaving too erratically to restart normally, use the model-specific force restart below.
Try Touch Accommodations for accidental taps
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations, turn the feature on, and test conservative values.

- Ignore Repeat can prevent closely repeated touches from being treated as separate input.
- Hold Duration can require a touch to last longer before it is accepted.
- Tap Assistance, Use Initial Touch Location, Use Final Touch Location, and Swipe Gestures change other aspects of touch recognition.
Test one change at a time and turn it off if ordinary swiping becomes slow or difficult. Apple describes these controls in its Touch Accommodations guide. They are an experiment for accidental input, not a guaranteed way to disable scroll-to-top; they cannot repair a display that is generating touches by itself.
Find out whether an app is responsible
Compare the behavior in Safari, Messages, Settings, Photos, and one or two third-party apps.

- One app only: update it, force-close and reopen it as a controlled test, restart the iPhone, and test the same content in another browser or app. Reinstall only after confirming that the app’s data is synced or backed up. Contact the developer if the problem is reproducible only there.
- Several unrelated apps: focus on the case, protector, moisture, accessories, touch input, and iOS rather than reinstalling every app.
- Settings also jumps or registers taps: an app-specific bug is less likely.
- One website only: try another website and browser before diagnosing the iPhone.
Force-restart instructions by iPhone model
A force restart normally preserves your contents. It is not the same as Restore, which erases the iPhone.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Release it when the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the Side/Top button and Volume Down together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Press and hold the Home button and Side/Top button together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.

After restarting, check Settings > General > Software Update. Updating is particularly sensible when the problem affects multiple apps, began after an iOS update, or is accompanied by other touch irregularities. Available versions and labels change, so rely on the update screen rather than a fixed version number.
Back up the iPhone while it is usable. If ordinary updating fails, recovery mode offers two different choices:

- Update reinstalls iOS while attempting to keep personal data.
- Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone.
Apple says to try Update before Restore when a computer presents both options: Apple’s recovery-mode instructions. Connect to a Mac with Finder or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app; older configurations may use iTunes. For iPhone 8 and later, press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Connect to Computer screen appears. If downloading takes more than 15 minutes and the phone exits recovery mode, let the download finish and repeat the recovery-mode steps.
Signs the display may need service
- The phone scrolls or activates controls while lying untouched and flat.
- Touches occur in multiple apps, including Settings, or cluster along one edge.
- The behavior changes when charging and remains after trying different accessories.
- The display was cracked, exposed to liquid, compressed, or recently replaced.
- Removing the case, protector, moisture, and accessories does not help.
Back up the iPhone, record a short video of the behavior if possible, and note the model, iOS version, affected apps, and charging conditions. Then contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Persistent excessive sensitivity or intermittent response may require service, as Apple explains at its touchscreen support page.
Repair choices and what they mean
Apple’s repair estimates depend on model, location, coverage, and inspection; taxes or shipping may apply, and Authorized Service Providers can set their own fees. Check the current estimate and service options at Apple iPhone repair. Apple states that service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer, subject to its terms.
AppleCare can change accidental-damage and other service costs where available and where the device qualifies. It will not disable a normal status-bar gesture. Independent providers may be faster or less expensive, but Apple says non-authorized repairs are not backed by Apple’s Limited Warranty or AppleCare unless applicable law requires otherwise: Apple’s repair-provider information.
Should you reset all settings or erase the iPhone?
Do not factory-reset a phone merely because a status-bar tap scrolls upward. Escalate in this order: restart; remove the case, protector, moisture, and accessories; compare apps; update iOS and the affected app; back up; then consider Reset All Settings only if the evidence points to software and simpler steps fail. Reset All Settings is less destructive than erasing, but it removes preferences such as saved Wi-Fi networks.
Use recovery-mode Update before Restore where possible. Choose Restore only after a verified backup and when Apple Support or service recommends it, because Restore erases personal data.
