If WhatsApp looks zoomed in, first open your phone’s regular Camera app. If that app is also cropped or distorted, troubleshoot the phone; if it looks normal, the problem is probably limited to WhatsApp. Then pinch inward on WhatsApp’s preview (or tap 1× if shown), switch cameras, force-close WhatsApp, restart the phone, update the app and operating system, and check camera permissions. Android users can also clear WhatsApp’s cache. Back up chats before reinstalling.
This guide covers WhatsApp’s chat and Status cameras, video-call previews and saved photos—not the separate Zoom Meetings app.
First identify what is actually zoomed

WhatsApp can use a different aspect ratio, lens or camera API from the phone’s Camera app. A tighter preview is not automatically a broken lens. Compare the chat camera, Status camera, a video call, the native Camera app and the saved image.
Quick fixes that do not risk your chats
- Reset accidental zoom. Pinch inward on the WhatsApp preview. If a lens control is visible, tap 1× or the standard lens selector. Not every phone or WhatsApp screen shows the same controls.
- Switch cameras. Tap the front/rear camera icon, test the other camera, then switch back. This can restart a stuck camera session.
- Close WhatsApp completely. Also close other apps that may be using the camera, then reopen WhatsApp.
- Restart the phone. This clears temporary camera-service failures without deleting chats.
Update WhatsApp and the phone
Updates often contain compatibility fixes, but no single current WhatsApp release is confirmed to fix every zoom report.

Android
Open Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & device → Updates available, then update WhatsApp. Install pending Android, camera-app and Google Play system updates where your phone offers them. Google recommends updating both the app and operating system when an Android app malfunctions: Android app troubleshooting.
iPhone
Open App Store → profile picture, then update WhatsApp. Also install the latest available iOS update in Settings → General → Software Update.
Check camera permissions
Android
- Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions → Camera.
- Choose Allow while using the app (or the equivalent option on your device).
- Check the phone-wide switch at Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Privacy controls → Camera access and turn it on.
Manufacturers rename menus and may place them elsewhere. Android 12 and later can also show a green camera-use indicator. Google documents app permissions at Android camera permissions and the global switch at Android camera access.
iPhone
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable WhatsApp. iOS requires an app to have camera permission before it can use the camera: Apple’s camera-permission guide.

Android: clear WhatsApp’s cache
After updating and restarting, try Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Some phones label the menu Storage or Storage usage.
Clear cache removes temporary files and normally preserves your account and chats. Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data as a casual substitute: those remove the app’s local data and can require registration or chat restoration. Google explains the distinction at Android storage and cache.
There is no equivalent “clear WhatsApp cache” button in normal iPhone settings. Use force-close, restart, updates, permission reset and—only after a verified backup—reinstallation instead.
Video calls and automatic framing
If only calls are zoomed, open the self-view or video-effects controls during the call. Android manufacturers may offer face tracking, auto-framing or similar effects under different names.

On supported newer iPhones, Apple documents Center Stage on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air. During a supported call, tap the video thumbnail, choose Camera Effects, and turn off Center Stage if it is enabled. Apple’s documentation does not confirm identical controls in every WhatsApp build or camera screen; availability depends on the iPhone, iOS version and app integration: Center Stage availability and iPhone video effects.
Test the phone’s normal Camera app
Take a test photo with the native Camera app and, if possible, another camera-dependent app such as FaceTime on iPhone. Interpret the result:
- Only WhatsApp is affected: continue with WhatsApp updates, permissions, cache clearing and, if necessary, a safe reinstall.
- Every camera app is affected: remove any case or screen protector obstructing the lens, restart the phone, update it and clear the native Camera app’s cache on Android.
- Only the front camera fails: test that lens in the native Camera app. A front-camera hardware or obstruction problem is not fixed by reinstalling WhatsApp.
- The preview is tight but the saved file is normal: the issue may be display framing rather than captured-image zoom.

Reinstall WhatsApp safely
Use this only after the lower-risk steps fail and the native Camera app works normally.

- In WhatsApp, open Settings → Chats → Chat backup (Android or iPhone) and choose Back up or Back Up Now.
- Check the backup date, confirm you know the phone number and any two-step-verification credentials, and ensure the backup has finished.
- Delete WhatsApp and reinstall it only from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Restore the backup when WhatsApp offers it.
Unsynced local chats or media may not be recoverable. Reinstalling is a reset, not a guaranteed cure.

Stop repeating WhatsApp fixes if the native Camera app is also zoomed, freezing, black, or distorted; if several camera apps fail; or if the front lens fails everywhere. Install phone and camera updates, clear the native Camera cache on Android, test safe mode when your manufacturer provides it, and contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider. Do not install unofficial APKs, modified WhatsApp packages or “camera booster” apps.

If nothing worked: report it with useful details
When the native Camera app is normal and the problem survives restart, permission checks, updates, Android cache clearing and a backed-up reinstall, report it through WhatsApp’s in-app Help/Contact route or its official support page. Include:

- Phone model and Android or iOS version.
- WhatsApp version.
- Whether chat camera, Status, calls or saved files are affected.

- What the native Camera app does.
- When the problem began and whether it followed an update.
- A screen recording or screenshot, if it does not expose private content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is WhatsApp zoomed in when my phone Camera app is normal?
That points to WhatsApp’s camera session, permissions, cache or a device-compatibility issue. Reset the preview, switch cameras, restart, update, check permissions and clear the Android cache if applicable.
Can I clear WhatsApp’s cache on iPhone?
No normal iPhone setting provides an Android-style per-app cache button. Force-close, restart, update, reset camera permission and reinstall only after confirming a chat backup.
Will clearing WhatsApp data delete my chats?
Clear storage or Clear data removes local app data and may require restoration from a backup. Use Clear cache instead on Android unless you deliberately intend to reset the app.
Why is only the selfie camera zoomed?
Test the front camera in the native Camera app, check for an obstruction and inspect any auto-framing or face-tracking effect. If it fails in every app, contact the phone manufacturer.
Why does the camera zoom during WhatsApp calls?
