A planned San Diego-to-Jacksonville drive using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) ended after roughly 60 miles when the refreshed Model Y struck large roadway debris in California. Video coverage appears to show little or no timely braking or evasive steering, while the driver also reacted late. The incident is therefore a sharp example of both sides of supervised automation: the system can fail to handle an obstacle, and the human must still be ready to take over immediately.
What happened on the attempted coast-to-coast trip?
Two Tesla shareholders and online influencers set out from San Diego, California, for Jacksonville, Florida, in a refreshed Model Y commonly called the “Juniper” Model Y. Electrek reported that the car was running FSD v13.9 and crashed before leaving California, after traveling about 60 miles—roughly 2.5% of the planned route. Electrek’s report describes the trip and software version.
The available video and subsequent coverage indicate this sequence:
- The passenger noticed an object ahead and initially described it as possibly roadkill.
- As the Tesla approached, the object appeared to be substantial metal debris, described in coverage as a girder or similar piece of roadway material.
- The vehicle did not visibly brake or steer around it in the footage described by the reports.
- The car hit the object, bounced violently and became briefly airborne or dramatically unsettled.
- The driver intervened and pulled toward the roadside.
The object’s exact identity and origin were not independently established. No injuries were reported. The trip ended almost immediately.

What damage did the Tesla sustain?
According to the creators’ follow-up and media reports, the collision broke a front sway-bar bracket and damaged suspension components. Plastic parts were also damaged, and the car displayed multiple warnings. InsideEVs reported a repair estimate of about $22,000; that figure should be treated as a reported estimate, not a confirmed insurer-paid amount or final invoice. Who was conducting the demonstration?
Secondary coverage identified the driver as Justin Demaree, known online as Bearded Tesla Guy, traveling with another Tesla shareholder and influencer. They were enthusiastic Tesla advocates attempting to demonstrate FSD capability, not an independent safety laboratory or a controlled benchmark team. Their relationship to Tesla is relevant context, although it does not by itself prove that their account is inaccurate.
“Full Self-Driving” still requires a human driver
Tesla’s official name, Full Self-Driving (Supervised), is important. The Model Y owner’s manual says the system can attempt navigation to a destination, including turns, intersections, roundabouts and highway entry and exit, but may require intervention. It also requires the driver to remain attentive and ready to take control at all times. A cabin camera monitors attentiveness, and behavior can vary with market, vehicle configuration, hardware and software version. - 【IMPORTANT: SHIPPING CREASE RECOVERY】: Due to compact packaging during shipping, your floor mats or cargo liners may arrive with temporary folds or creases. This is normal and does not indicate a product defect. Please see our dedicated crease recovery video in the main product video section for step-by-step instructions. Simply unroll the mats, lay them flat in a warm environment, and allow them to recover naturally. For stubborn creases, gently warm the affected area with a hair dryer on low heat while smoothing it by hand. Do not use high heat or place the heat source directly against the mat. Most creases will gradually disappear with proper recovery and normal use.

- 【PREMIUM TPE WITH COMFORTABLE 3-LAYER DESIGN】: Made from odorless, flexible TPE that is soft yet durable. The multi-layer construction provides waterproof, anti-slip, and sound-dampening performance while maintaining a clean, factory-inspired look.
That means this was an FSD-assisted drive, not a driverless or unsupervised coast-to-coast journey. The occupants remained responsible for monitoring the road and intervening.
Was the crash caused by FSD or by the driver?
The footage supports criticism of both the system’s apparent response and the driver’s apparent supervision. The passenger reportedly saw the object before impact, while the driver’s hands were not visibly on the wheel for much of the approach and intervention came only at the last moment. That is inconsistent with Tesla’s instruction to maintain continuous attention.

At the same time, a large stationary object in a travel lane is a meaningful perception and emergency-response challenge. The video appears to show no timely braking or avoidance. It does not, however, reveal what the perception system detected internally, whether any intervention was attempted outside the camera view, or the technical root cause. The available material cannot establish civil or criminal liability, a software defect, or a definitive allocation of fault.

Elon Musk said in 2016 that Tesla would complete a fully autonomous coast-to-coast drive by the end of 2017. The influencers’ trip was framed as a way to revisit that broader promise, but it was not an equivalent test. A genuinely driverless journey would have no human fallback responsible for continuous supervision; this 2025 attempt used a supervised consumer driver-assistance system. The historical promise and the reported trip context are discussed in Electrek’s report.

What this incident does—and does not—prove
It illustrates real failure modes
- Stationary debris can expose limits in detection, braking or evasive planning.
- Construction, temporary lanes, glare, darkness, rain, unusual markings and camera obstruction can increase risk.
- A driver may become overconfident after many miles of apparently competent automation.
- A collision can create suspension, steering, wheel, underbody or battery-related damage and a cascade of warnings.
It does not establish fleetwide safety
One crash cannot show that every Tesla, Model Y or FSD software version behaves the same way. Vehicle hardware, software, geography, visibility and road design matter. Nor does it prove that FSD is uniquely unsafe, unusable or defective. A meaningful comparison would require exposure-adjusted data, consistent definitions, controlled vehicle and software variables, and independent investigation.
Tesla’s own Vehicle Safety Report uses a specific definition: a collision is counted as involving FSD Supervised if FSD was active at any point during the five seconds before the collision. That methodology is useful context, but it is not an independent verdict on comparative safety.
How owners should use FSD around debris
- Keep your eyes on the road and your hands ready for immediate intervention.
- Treat debris, construction zones, poor visibility, glare, emergency scenes and ambiguous lane markings as high-risk conditions.
- Do not wait for a warning before braking or steering when a safe intervention is clearly necessary.
- After a strike, pull over safely and check for tire, wheel, suspension, steering, fluid and warning-light problems.
- Do not continue a long trip if the vehicle reports suspension, steering, braking or drivetrain faults.
- Preserve dashcam footage, alerts, photographs and the event time for insurance and technical review.
- Contact Tesla Roadside Assistance or a qualified repair provider; use Tesla Service for diagnosis and repair arrangements.
What should a prospective FSD buyer expect?
FSD may reduce workload on some familiar routes by assisting with lane keeping, turns, traffic interactions and navigation. It remains a supervised Level 2-style driving aid, not a license to sleep, use a phone or assume that a long period of success guarantees the next response. The Tesla Model Y involved here should not by itself determine whether someone buys the vehicle or FSD; insurance, configuration, repair access, software version and personal willingness to supervise continuously all matter. Tesla’s current product information is available at tesla.com/fsd.
For long trips, alternatives include conventional driving with appropriately used cruise control, other supervised driver-assistance systems, commercial robotaxi services where legally available, or a professional driver. None should be called universally safer without comparable independent evidence.

This was not an autonomous Tesla completing—or failing—a driverless coast-to-coast run. It was a supervised FSD drive that ended after about 60 miles when the car struck roadway debris. The footage appears to show a potentially serious system response failure and a driver who did not intervene soon enough. The practical lesson is narrower and more useful than either extreme conclusion: Tesla’s FSD can assist with a long drive, but every mile still requires an attentive human prepared to take control.
