This Mini LED TV Might Finally Make You Forget About OLED

Sony’s BRAVIA 9 II is the most convincing OLED challenger yet, but blooming, viewing angles and motion keep OLED ahead for dark-room movie fans.

Short answer: no Mini LED television makes OLED obsolete for everyone. As of August 2026, Sony’s BRAVIA 9 II is the most convincing OLED challenger: its RGB Mini LED backlight delivers exceptional brightness, effective local dimming, strong processing and a matte screen on most sizes. It is a better choice than OLED for bright rooms, large-screen HDR and heavy static-content use. OLED remains superior for perfect blacks, zero blooming, wide viewing angles and instantaneous pixel response.

The right verdict depends less on the logo on the bezel than on your room, seating, content and gaming hardware.

Which Mini LED TV is the headline really about?

The flagship answer is the Sony BRAVIA 9 II, Sony’s 2026 4K RGB Mini LED television. RTINGS tested it on July 16, 2026 using Methodology v2.2 and lists US models in 65, 75, 85 and 115 inches: K-65XR90M2, K-75XR90M2, K-85XR90M2 and K-115XR90M2. The smaller three sizes use a matte coating; the 115-inch version is glossy, so its reflection performance should not be assumed to match the others. It uses Sony’s RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro, Google TV 14, an ATSC 3.0 tuner and two HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K/120Hz and VRR. (RTINGS review)

That distinction matters because “Mini LED” covers everything from affordable LCD sets to premium RGB models. The BRAVIA 9 II is a flagship technology demonstration, while the TCL QM7L is the more compelling value proposition.

What RGB Mini LED changes

Every Mini LED television is still an LCD TV. The LCD layer shapes the image but does not emit light; a backlight behind it is divided into independently controlled dimming zones. More, smaller zones and better algorithms can reduce stray light around bright objects.

Conventional sets generally use blue LEDs with a quantum-dot layer to create color. RGB Mini LED uses separate red, green and blue LED emitters. The goal is purer colors and greater color volume, especially in bright highlights. That does not create OLED-style pixel-level black control. RTINGS describes 2026 as a major RGB Mini LED launch year but cautions that manufacturer demonstrations use favorable content, color haloing remains possible and claims such as 100% BT.2020 coverage still need independent verification. (RTINGS 2026 TV lineup)

Where the BRAVIA 9 II can beat OLED

Bright rooms and full-screen HDR

High-end Mini LED sets can sustain intense brightness across a large part of the screen. Sunlit sports, snow, daylight landscapes and full-screen HDR highlights retain more impact than on many OLEDs, which may reduce brightness on large bright scenes. The BRAVIA 9 II’s matte coating on 65-, 75- and 85-inch models also helps in rooms with windows or overhead lighting. RTINGS rated its peak brightness exceptional and its reflection handling particularly useful for bright-room viewing. (RTINGS review)

Large screens and static content

Mini LED is often available in very large sizes at lower prices than similarly sized flagship OLEDs, although premium RGB models can still be extremely expensive. It also avoids the organic-pixel burn-in mechanism associated with OLED. That makes it attractive for news channels with persistent logos, sports scoreboards, desktop use, games with fixed HUDs and televisions left on for many hours. It is not immune to panel defects, image retention or backlight aging.

Processing and HDR presentation

Sony’s processing and upscaling are major reasons to consider the BRAVIA 9 II rather than choosing by brightness figures alone. It can make broadcast television, compressed streams and lower-resolution material look cleaner while preserving a forceful HDR image.

Where OLED still wins

Black precision and blooming

OLED turns individual pixels off. Mini LED turns off zones, so a bright subtitle, star or logo can illuminate neighboring pixels in the same zone. That halo is blooming. RTINGS found the BRAVIA 9 II’s local dimming highly effective, but still observed blooming around bright details and subtitles. Its direct Mini LED-versus-OLED comparison found OLED more precise around small highlights, even when a premium LED set approached OLED in overall contrast. (RTINGS Mini LED vs. OLED comparison)

Dark-room movies

In a dedicated dark theater, letterboxed films, star fields, white subtitles on black and high-contrast animation expose blooming more readily. OLED remains the safer choice if a perfectly uniform black screen matters more than peak brightness.

Viewing angle

LCD contrast and color deteriorate as you move off-axis. OLED retains its image much better for viewers seated to the side. The BRAVIA 9 II is therefore best with centered seating, not a wide sectional where many people watch from sharp angles.

Motion and gaming response

OLED pixels transition almost instantaneously. LCD pixels are slower and can look blurrier in fast motion, particularly at 60Hz. The BRAVIA 9 II supports 4K/120Hz and VRR, but it has only two HDMI 2.1 inputs and no higher-refresh-rate PC mode. A gaming PC, two consoles and an eARC soundbar can quickly exhaust those ports. Check HDMI bandwidth, VRR range, ALLM, input lag and 60Hz motion—not merely a “gaming TV” label.

Mini LED versus OLED at a glance

Category Mini LED (especially BRAVIA 9 II) OLED
Black level Very deep, but zone-based Pixel-level black
Blooming Possible around subtitles and small highlights None from backlight zones
Full-screen brightness Usually stronger, especially for HDR and sports Generally lower on large bright scenes
Viewing angle Degrades from the side Much wider
Motion response Slower LCD transitions Near-instantaneous pixels
Static-content concern Avoids OLED’s organic-pixel burn-in mechanism Burn-in must be considered for unusually long static use
Large-screen value Often better, though flagship RGB models are costly Varies by size and generation
Gaming inputs BRAVIA 9 II has two HDMI 2.1 ports Model-dependent; verify the exact set

How the leading alternatives compare

Model Technology and strengths Main compromise
Sony BRAVIA 9 II RGB Mini LED; exceptional brightness, local dimming, processing and matte coating on smaller sizes Expensive, side-angle loss, some blooming, two HDMI 2.1 inputs
Hisense UR9 RGB Mini LED, Dolby Vision 2, 4K/170Hz, three HDMI 2.1 ports, DisplayPort and Devialet-tuned 4.1.2 audio UK-specific availability and promotion cited; OLED still leads in several picture areas
Samsung R95H Premium Micro RGB presentation for Samsung ecosystem buyers TechRadar cited about $2,999 for 65 inches in the US; independent long-term testing is still developing
TCL QM7L Conventional Mini LED; 2,270-nit HDR test, 9.4 ms input lag, VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro Some blooming and less refined processing
LG G6 OLED Pixel-perfect blacks, no blooming, excellent angles and response Less full-screen brightness and OLED static-content considerations
Samsung S95H OLED QD-OLED contrast, color volume and fast response OLED static-content considerations and variable pricing

The TCL QM7L is the standout value story. Tom’s Guide measured 2,270 nits HDR brightness, Delta-E 2.64 SDR color accuracy and 9.4 ms input lag in its August 13, 2026 review. The 75-inch model was cited at approximately $1,500 before possible sales, making it far less costly than flagship RGB sets. (Tom’s Guide review)

The Hisense UR9’s cited discount is UK-specific; do not convert its £900 promotion into US pricing. Its feature list includes 4K/170Hz, three HDMI 2.1 ports, DisplayPort, VIDAA and Dolby Vision 2. (What Hi-Fi? review) TechRadar’s R95H comparison mixes US, UK and Australian prices, so verify the exact regional model before buying. (TechRadar comparison)

Choose by room and viewing habits

Choose the Sony BRAVIA 9 II if

  • Your room is bright and reflection control matters.
  • You want intense HDR and a very large screen.
  • Most viewers sit centrally.
  • Sony’s processing and upscaling are worth a premium.
  • Two HDMI 2.1 inputs are sufficient.

Choose the TCL QM7L if

  • Value, 75-inch size and brightness matter more than reference-grade blacks.
  • You accept some blooming for substantially lower pricing.
  • You want strong console gaming features without flagship cost.

Choose the Hisense UR9 if

  • You need RGB Mini LED plus 4K/170Hz, DisplayPort and three HDMI 2.1 ports.
  • Dolby Vision 2 or its built-in Devialet-tuned audio is important.
  • The model, warranty and software are officially supported in your country.

Choose OLED instead if

  • You can darken the room and primarily watch films.
  • Blooming would distract you.
  • Several viewers sit off-axis.
  • Fast competitive gaming response is a priority.
  • You want the most uniform black screen and do not run static content unusually long.

What to check before purchase

  1. Confirm the exact regional model, tuner, operating system, warranty and HDR formats.
  2. Check whether the screen size changes the coating or dimming hardware; the BRAVIA 9 II’s 115-inch model is glossy.
  3. Count HDMI 2.1 ports for consoles, a gaming PC and an eARC soundbar.
  4. Watch subtitle scenes, star fields, black bars and bright objects on black in a dark room.
  5. Test slow pans and 60Hz motion, not only a 120Hz demo.
  6. View the set from your actual seating angles.
  7. Compare full-screen brightness and reflection handling, not just a tiny-window peak-nit claim.

Verdict

You can reasonably forget about OLED if you watch in a bright room, want the largest screen, prioritize sustained HDR impact or display static logos and desktop interfaces for long periods. The Sony BRAVIA 9 II is the strongest current Mini LED argument, while the TCL QM7L makes the technology far easier to justify on a budget.

But if your priority is a dark-room movie image with absolutely no haloing, broad seating or the fastest possible response, OLED remains the better display technology—and premium OLED alternatives such as the LG G6 and Samsung S95H deserve comparison before spending flagship Mini LED money.
