Apple released firmware updates for the 140W USB-C Power Adapter and several Magic accessories on November 18, 2025. The rollout appears to be genuine and largely automatic, but Apple has not published a change log. That means owners can verify the affected models and reported version numbers, yet cannot reliably claim a new feature, faster charging, better Bluetooth range or a particular security fix.

| Accessory | Earlier reported version | New reported version | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 140W USB-C Power Adapter | 1.4.73 | 1.4.84 | Reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac |
| USB-C Magic Keyboard models | 3.1.4 | 3.1.9 | Reported by MacRumors |
| USB-C Magic Trackpad | 3.1.1 at launch, according to MacRumors | 3.1.9 | 9to5Mac reported the prior version as 3.1.3 |
| Magic Trackpad 2 | 3.1.1 | 3.1.8 | Reported by MacRumors |
The USB-C Trackpad discrepancy matters: MacRumors described 3.1.1 as its launch version, while 9to5Mac listed 3.1.3. Neither account makes one prior number universally definitive. Forum posts also mentioned versions such as 4.1.0, 5.1.0 and 5.2.0, but those are anecdotal and may reflect staged delivery, hardware differences or reporting inconsistencies rather than Apple’s official release target.
What did the firmware change?
Apple has not publicly explained the contents of these updates. MacRumors mentioned possible performance or security improvements, while 9to5Mac raised compatibility and edge-case fixes as possibilities. Those are possibilities, not confirmed changes.
There is no authoritative evidence that this release:
- Improves Bluetooth range or keyboard latency
- Fixes a named disconnection problem
- Changes charging speed or USB Power Delivery
- Adds gestures, Touch ID functions or Apple Intelligence
- Contains a confirmed security patch
The practical answer is therefore simple: Apple updated the firmware, but the visible effect remains undocumented. A modern USB-C power adapter contains control electronics and negotiates power with devices, so firmware is technically plausible; that fact does not reveal what Apple changed.

How the update is delivered
MacRumors reported that the firmware installs automatically when an accessory is actively paired with a compatible Apple device running iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS or visionOS. Apple does not expose an ordinary “Check for firmware update” button or a documented standalone installer for these products.
Apple’s setup guidance says that connecting a Magic Keyboard or Magic Trackpad to a Mac with the appropriate cable charges it and pairs it automatically. You can confirm the connection in Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth. See Apple’s instructions for setting up a Magic Keyboard and connecting and troubleshooting a Magic Trackpad.
How to encourage an update on a keyboard or trackpad
- Turn on the keyboard or trackpad.
- Connect it directly to a Mac using USB-C to USB-C for USB-C models, or the appropriate USB-C-to-Lightning or Lightning-to-USB cable for applicable older models.
- Leave it connected and paired rather than disconnecting immediately.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth and confirm that the accessory appears as connected.
- Use the accessory normally while any background delivery occurs.
- Disconnect it after pairing or charging is complete.
Apple documents the charging and pairing behavior, not a guaranteed installation time, progress indicator or manual firmware command. A cable connection should therefore be treated as a way to maintain a reliable host connection, not as a guaranteed forced update.
What to do with the 140W power adapter
Use the adapter normally with a compatible Apple device and leave the setup connected to an Apple host that can receive accessory firmware updates. Avoid unplugging it immediately if you are trying to allow background delivery. The available reporting does not describe a user-facing firmware utility, progress screen or separate adapter installer.

Can you force the firmware update?
Not through an officially documented Apple control in the available guidance. Do not download firmware files, run Terminal commands, repeatedly reset the accessory, use third-party firmware tools or connect the adapter to a Windows PC to force a release.
If a version does not appear or the accessory is misbehaving, use this conservative sequence:
- Install a currently supported operating-system update on the host Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Vision Pro.
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled where relevant.
- Connect a keyboard or trackpad to a Mac by cable and leave it paired.
- Restart the host device and the accessory once.
- Check the accessory information or Bluetooth details again.
- Contact Apple Support if pairing, charging or normal operation remains unreliable.
The exact rollout timing is not documented, so an unchanged number does not by itself prove that hardware has failed.

Look in the accessory’s information panel or Bluetooth details on the paired Apple device. Depending on the model and rollout state, you may initially see the old number, an intermediate number or no obvious update notification. Community reports document differing values, but they are not a reliable official version list.

Apple’s public support pages explain setup, charging and connection checks rather than providing a complete firmware dashboard. Version visibility can therefore lag delivery or vary between accessory generations.
USB-C, Lightning and feature compatibility
Do not assume that every Magic Keyboard shares one firmware branch. Apple identifies the USB-C Magic Keyboard as a 2024 product with Bluetooth, a rechargeable battery and automatic Mac pairing in its specifications. The USB-C Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad requires an Apple-silicon Mac running macOS 15.1 or later, according to Apple’s technical specifications.
Those host requirements apply to the accessory’s features, not necessarily to every firmware-delivery scenario. Older Lightning accessories may have separate firmware numbering or no corresponding release in this update.
Do owners need to act immediately?
There is no evidence that Apple made this release mandatory or introduced a visible new function. If an accessory works correctly, allow it to update when the opportunity arises; do not replace it solely because the reported number has not changed. Updating becomes more worthwhile when you are already troubleshooting pairing, charging or compatibility problems, but the release itself is not proof that it fixes any particular fault.

The Bottom Line
The November 18, 2025 firmware rollout is real and includes Apple’s 140W USB-C adapter, USB-C Magic Keyboard models, USB-C Magic Trackpad and Magic Trackpad 2. Apple has not said what changed, so let a working accessory update automatically and avoid treating unverified feature or security claims as facts.
