What AMD chipset drivers do
AMD chipset software is a coordinated package of platform components, not one driver for the Ryzen CPU. Depending on the motherboard and Windows version, it can include support for AMD PCI devices, GPIO, I²C, UART, SMBus, PSP, ACPI, USB, mailbox, power management, Ryzen power plans and performance-management features. Components and versions vary by hardware.
A chipset driver supports the motherboard platform. A Radeon driver supports an AMD graphics card or integrated GPU. A BIOS/UEFI update changes motherboard firmware. None of these automatically replaces the others.
Updating chipset software may resolve compatibility, USB or PCIe behavior, sleep/wake, power-management or newer-hardware issues. It is not a guaranteed gaming-FPS upgrade.

AMD’s currently published release notes identify package 8.07.16.1035, with support covering platforms including WRX90/TRX50, X870/X870E, B850, B840, B650/B650E, X570, B550, A520, X470, B450, X370, B350 and A320, subject to processor and operating-system limits. Before downloading
Decide who should supply the driver
- Laptop or prebuilt desktop: Check Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI or the system maker first. OEM packages can include customized power, thermal, docking, USB-C, hotkey and sleep components.
- Self-built desktop with a retail motherboard: AMD’s package is usually the normal source. Compare it with the motherboard maker’s validated package when the board vendor has a known fix.
- Windows Update: Useful for routine maintenance, but it may not expose AMD’s newest package.
AMD’s generic package can work on an OEM system, but use the manufacturer’s package when it explicitly requires it or when a platform-specific problem is involved.
Check Windows and hardware details
Confirm whether you run 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and note the motherboard model. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, although an AMD package may still list Windows 10 compatibility for particular platforms. Verify current OS support before installing.
Find your motherboard chipset
System Information
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, and press Enter. - Record BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product.
- Search that exact board model on the manufacturer’s support page to identify its chipset, such as AM4/B550 or AM5/B650.
PowerShell
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-CimInstance Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer,Product,Version,SerialNumberThis reports the board model; its specifications may still be needed to determine the chipset.

Other methods
dxdiag (Windows + R, then dxdiag) confirms processor and Windows details. CPU-Z and similar utilities can display chipset information, but they are optional; the board model and its official specifications are normally sufficient.
Download the official AMD package
- Open AMD’s Drivers and Support page.
- Choose Chipsets under Search or Browse Products.
- Select the correct socket or platform, then the exact chipset.
- Click Submit.
- Expand the Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit entry.
- Read Driver Details, supported hardware, release notes and known issues, then download AMD Ryzen Chipset Driver.
The selector matters: a B550 package and a B650 package are not interchangeable merely because both are Ryzen platforms. AMD’s installation guide explains this product-selection path at AMD Chipset Software installation instructions.
Install AMD Ryzen Chipset Software
Prepare Windows
- Save work and close applications.
- Keep a laptop connected to AC power.
- Optionally create a restore point.
- Do not interrupt the installer. Temporarily testing with security software disabled is a troubleshooting step only, not a default requirement.
Run the installer
- Right-click the downloaded executable and choose Run as administrator when necessary.
- Allow it to extract setup files, normally into an AMD folder on the system drive.
- Review the component list. Supported components are selected by default; leave them selected unless you have a specific reason not to install one.
- Accept the license terms and click Install.
- Wait for each component to complete, then choose Close or Finish.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
A laptop touchpad may briefly stop responding while changes are applied; AMD describes that as normal. Screens and labels can vary with package and system configuration.
Alternative installation sources
AMD Auto-Detect
AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool can identify compatible Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipset packages. It supports Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later. Because it may offer graphics and chipset software together, inspect the proposed components before accepting.

Windows Update
Windows can install recommended drivers automatically, while optional drivers require manual selection:
- Windows 11: Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Advanced options → View optional updates.
Microsoft says optional driver updates are not installed automatically and recommends the hardware manufacturer’s website when Windows Update cannot find the latest compatible driver. See Microsoft’s driver guidance.
Device Manager
Device Manager can update an individual device, but it is not a replacement for the complete AMD package. Manually replacing one PCI, GPIO or PSP entry can leave coordinated components mismatched. Use it to inspect warnings or an individual provider and version, not as the primary chipset-update method. AMD also warns against removing chipset components there or with third-party driver-removal tools.
Verify that the update installed
Installed apps
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, search for AMD Chipset Software, and note the package version when Windows displays it.

Installer result
Read the installer’s completion screen and retain its log or a screenshot if troubleshooting. It may show components installed or skipped.
Individual devices
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Inspect relevant entries under System devices, Software components and other AMD categories.
- Open an entry’s Properties → Driver tab to view provider, date and version.
One component retaining an older-looking date does not prove failure: the package contains multiple components, and some do not apply to every system. Compare the installed package with AMD’s release-note version rather than relying on one Device Manager entry.
When to update—and when not to
- Install an update after a motherboard or processor change, a Windows reinstall, an unknown AMD device warning, or a documented fix for your issue.
- Consider it when the installed package is substantially older and the platform has stability, sleep, USB or PCIe problems.
- Do not update solely expecting higher FPS on a system that is working normally.
- Do not assume a BIOS update installed chipset software, or that chipset software updates BIOS settings. BIOS changes can reset memory profiles, boot mode, fan curves, virtualization and overclocking options.
Troubleshoot installation errors

| Installer hangs | Wait several minutes during extraction, check Windows Installer in Task Manager, restart, download a fresh copy, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and test without VPN or aggressive endpoint-security software. A clean boot is an advanced option. |
| One device shows an old date | Check AMD Chipset Software’s package version and installer result; do not judge the whole package by one component. |
| Laptop functions break | Reinstall the OEM package and use the manufacturer’s support channel. |

Normal update versus clean reinstall
Do not uninstall first for an ordinary upgrade. AMD’s normal path is an in-place update. A clean reinstall is appropriate after a motherboard or CPU change, a severely outdated or corrupted installation, or repeated installer failure.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Programs and Features).
- Select AMD Chipset Software and use its own uninstall option.
- Restart when appropriate, then install the correct package again.
Do not delete individual AMD entries in Device Manager and do not use a third-party remover as the default method. AMD’s chipset instructions specifically direct users to the chipset software uninstaller.
If you need to downgrade
Downgrading is different from updating. AMD’s current release notes warn that after a 7.xx.xx.xx installer, installing 6.xx.xx.xx or earlier may require uninstalling the newer package and deleting C:Program Files (x86)AMDChipset_SoftwareQt_Dependencies. Treat this as an AMD-documented, version-specific workaround—not routine maintenance—and follow the release notes exactly.
Common questions
Should I update chipset drivers after updating the BIOS?
Check the chipset package separately. BIOS and Windows chipset software are independent updates.
Can AMD’s package be used on a laptop?
Sometimes, but the laptop maker’s package is the supported choice when it contains custom power, thermal, docking or hotkey behavior, or when AMD’s installer fails.
Can chipset updates fix Radeon crashes?
Not necessarily. Radeon crashes, black screens and game-specific GPU issues generally require the graphics driver and possibly game or firmware troubleshooting. AMD Auto-Detect can offer both package types, so select deliberately.
How often should chipset drivers be updated?
There is no useful calendar schedule. Update for a relevant fix, new hardware, a reinstall or a documented compatibility issue; otherwise, a working system does not need constant driver changes.
Can I install only PSP or GPIO?
The AMD package is designed to coordinate multiple platform components. Install the supported selections together unless AMD or your OEM gives a specific reason to alter them.
