Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchExtract an odometer’s displayed value with cy.get(), read the rendered text with .invoke('text'), normalize known formatting, convert the result with Number, parseInt, or parseFloat, and finish with a retryable assertion. Keeping those operations in one Cypress chain lets the query re-run while an animated or asynchronous counter changes.
The most maintainable starting point is a dedicated selector such as data-cy="odometer" rather than a class tied to visual styling.
Basic extraction from a text odometer
For an integer rendered as ordinary text, use this complete test:
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((raw) => {
const normalized = raw.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')
return Number(normalized)
})
.should('be.a', 'number')
.and('eq', 12345)
.invoke('text') yields the return value of the jQuery text method, so the callback receives a JavaScript string. The normalization removes presentation characters such as spaces, a dollar sign, or thousands separators before conversion. Apply that expression only when those characters are known to be formatting; blindly deleting punctuation can corrupt locale-specific decimals.

Choose the right numeric conversion
Number for a strict value
Number(string) is useful when the complete normalized string must represent a number. It produces NaN for invalid input, which makes malformed markup visible instead of silently accepting a prefix.
parseInt for whole-number displays
Use parseInt(value, 10) when the display is explicitly an integer. It discards everything after the integer portion, so it is unsuitable when fractional digits are significant.
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((raw) => parseInt(raw.replace(/[^d-]/g, ''), 10))
.should('eq', 12345)
parseFloat or Number for decimals
For a value such as 1,234.5, preserve the fraction and assert with a tolerance:
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((raw) => Number(raw.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')))
.should('be.closeTo', 1234.5, 0.01)
Do not use parseInt here: it truncates the decimal portion.
Normalize formatting without breaking locales
First determine what the application means by each punctuation mark. In an English-style display, 1,234.50 can be normalized by removing commas. In a locale where commas are decimal separators, the same text may mean 1234.50 only after a deliberate locale conversion. A robust parser should remove grouping separators, translate the known decimal separator to a period, and then convert.

function parseEnglishOdometer(raw) {
const value = raw
.replace(/s/g, '')
.replace(/,/g, '')
.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')
return Number(value)
}
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then(parseEnglishOdometer)
.should('eq', 12345.5)
If the display can contain a negative sign, permit one leading hyphen and validate the final result. If it can contain units such as km, remove only that known label rather than every non-numeric character. An empty string or NaN should fail the test, not be treated as zero.
When the number is mixed with a label
For text such as Total: 12,345 visits, isolate the numeric token first. This avoids accidentally joining digits from an unrelated label.
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.invoke('match', /-?d+(?:[.,]d+)?/)
.its('0')
.then((s) => Number(s.replace(',', '')))
.should('eq', 12345)
Adjust the regular expression for your sign rules and locale. If multiple numbers are possible, assert that the match exists and select by a semantic rule rather than taking the first match by accident.
Input-backed odometers
An <input> exposes its current value through the value property, not its text node. Cypress values are still strings, including for inputs with numeric types.
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('val')
.then(Number)
.should('eq', 12345)
Use .invoke('attr', 'value') only when you intentionally need the original HTML attribute. For the live value that a user sees or that JavaScript has changed, .invoke('val') is the appropriate source.

Animated rolling digits and hidden DOM nodes
Many odometer widgets render every digit in separate elements and keep old or incoming digits in the DOM during a transition. Selecting the container and concatenating all descendant text can therefore produce a transient or duplicated number.
Inspect the rendered markup and target only the nodes that represent the currently visible digit. If the application supplies a stable child marker, a test can look like this:
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"] [data-digit="visible"]')
.then(($digits) => [...$digits]
.map((el) => el.textContent.trim())
.join(''))
.then(Number)
.should('eq', 12345)
The child selector is application-specific. Prefer a single accessible text node, a value attribute, or a test-only data attribute when available; those representations are less coupled to animation internals. If no stable representation exists, coordinate with the component owner to expose one.
Make assertions retry while the value changes
Cypress queries and assertions retry until they pass or the command timeout is reached. Keep extraction, conversion, and the assertion in one chain so Cypress can re-query the changing display:
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((raw) => Number(raw.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')))
.should('be.gte', 100)
.and('be.lte', 200)
Text assertions such as have.text, include.text, and regular-expression checks are also retryable. A numeric assertion is preferable when formatting may change but the underlying value must remain the same.

Comparing a value before and after an action
Capture a static alias when you need the original number. Ordinary aliases can re-run their query; { type: 'static' } preserves the value obtained at alias creation.
Recommended Free Tools
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((s) => Number(s.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')))
.as('before', { type: 'static' })
cy.get('[data-cy="increment"]').click()
cy.get('[data-cy="odometer"]')
.invoke('text')
.then((s) => Number(s.replace(/[^d.-]/g, '')))
.then((after) => {
cy.get('@before').then((before) => {
expect(after).to.be.greaterThan(before)
})
})
If the increment is asynchronous, the final query and assertion will keep retrying. Avoid fixed sleeps unless the application has no observable readiness signal; waiting for a selector, state attribute, or network-driven UI change is more deterministic.
Selectors and component contracts
- Use
data-cyordata-testattributes dedicated to testing. - Do not select by generated class names, animation classes, or the exact visible label when those are likely to change.
- Expose one stable numeric representation for accessibility and testing when the visual widget is composed of many rolling elements.
- Keep the selector narrow enough that a second counter on the page cannot be matched accidentally.
Troubleshooting common failures
The result is NaN
Log or inspect the raw string. It may contain a label, a non-breaking space, an unexpected locale separator, or no digits because the component has not rendered. Narrow the cleanup rules, handle the locale explicitly, and assert that a numeric token was found.
The decimal is truncated
Replace parseInt with Number or parseFloat, and use be.closeTo when floating-point rounding is expected.
Commas produce the wrong value
Decide whether commas group thousands or mark decimals in the application’s locale. Remove grouping punctuation only after that decision; otherwise translate decimal and grouping separators in the correct order.
Best Value
- Car head-up display shows the driving speed in real time, with LED large font, clear and easy to view.
- GPS and BeiDou dual mode positioning speed measurement, stable performance, quick speed refresh, no delay.
- Equipped with shading plate, the display is not easily affected by light, and is clearly visible at day and night.
- Small size and light weight, non-destructive installation, will not block the line of sight, to ensure the safety of driving.
- USB plug and play, starts and stop with the car, suitable for car, truck, SUV, buses, motorcycles, etc.
The assertion reads an old animation frame
Select the visible digit nodes, wait on an application state marker, or expose a stable text/value attribute. A larger timeout cannot fix a selector that intentionally matches transitional nodes.
The test times out
Verify that the selector matches the intended element, that the component actually reaches the expected value, and that the conversion does not return NaN. Use Cypress’s command log and inspect the raw DOM at the failure point before increasing timeouts.
An input returns an empty string
Check whether the value is set after mount, whether the selector matches the correct input, and whether the component uses a custom element rather than a native input. Read a live input with .invoke('val').
Performance, reliability, and test design
- Parsing a short string is negligible; repeated DOM queries and waiting for a long animation are the usual costs.
- Assert the smallest meaningful condition. Exact equality is appropriate for a settled value; ranges or monotonic comparisons are better for continuously updating counters.
- Use a deterministic fixture or clock-controlled data when the counter depends on an external service. Otherwise a correct test can fail because the source changed between runs.
- Keep locale-specific parsing in a helper so every spec applies the same rules.
- Do not test visual digit transitions and numeric correctness with the same assertion. Numeric correctness should use a stable representation; animation coverage can be a separate visual test.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page for test evidence, documentation, or a visual baseline rather than read a value inside Cypress, ScreenshotNeo provides a single screenshot request. It accepts the page URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I assert the displayed string or the parsed number?
Assert the parsed number when the requirement is numeric behavior. Keep a separate text or visual assertion only when punctuation, labels, or formatting are themselves part of the requirement.
Can I use an ARIA label instead of visible text?
Yes, when the accessibility representation is the component’s stable source of truth. Read the relevant attribute and apply the same validation and conversion rules.
