Single-Board Computers for Browser Automation: 4 Board Families to Compare

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a browser-automation project on a single-board computer (SBC), start by checking the exact board variant’s memory, Linux image, browser and automation-runtime support, and storage needs. Raspberry Pi 5, Orange Pi 5 Plus, Radxa ROCK 5B/5B+, and Banana Pi BPI-M7 are candidates with documented hardware specifications, but the available specifications do not establish browser speed, simultaneous-session limits, or sustained-load stability. This is a qualified shortlist—not a ranking of ten boards or a performance test.

Why this is a four-family shortlist, not a ten-board ranking

A list of ten recommendations would imply ten individually checked options. The available manufacturer and documentation facts substantiate four board families, with Radxa’s ROCK 5B and 5B+ as variants within one family. They do not establish comparable browser-automation results, current prices, or availability. Adding unrelated boards to reach ten would make the list less useful, not more complete.

Use the candidates below as a starting point for compatibility checks. Specifications describe hardware capability; they do not prove that a particular Playwright, Selenium, browser, driver, or container combination is supported or performs well. No controlled comparison establishes which board is fastest, how many browser sessions any of them can run, or how they behave thermally under sustained automation.

What matters when choosing an SBC for browser automation

Memory capacity is a screening criterion

The operating system, browser processes, page contents, and automation runtime all need memory. Parallel pages or browser contexts add demand, but the available board specifications do not establish a universal minimum or a reliable concurrency figure. Compare the memory capacity of the exact SKU, then test the pages and concurrency you actually intend to run.

Check the complete software chain

A 64-bit Arm processor is not by itself proof that your browser automation stack will run. Verify a maintained Linux image for the exact model and revision, then check that image’s browser package, automation-runtime version, browser driver if required, and container image architecture. Treat manufacturer OS listings as an indication of available images, not a guarantee that every dependency works on each image.

Account for storage, connectivity, and the whole build

Operating-system and project data need storage. Compare each board’s documented interfaces and confirm whether your chosen drive needs an adapter or add-on. Also check wired networking, USB and other I/O required by your deployment. The total build can include the board, power supply, cooling, storage, adapter, enclosure, and shipping; the available evidence does not establish a current comparable cost for those combinations.

Four board families to compare

Board Documented processor and memory Documented storage and software details What to verify for automation
Raspberry Pi 5 Broadcom BCM2712, 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76; LPDDR4X configurations listed at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB. M.2 SSD connectivity is described through an add-on. Confirm the selected memory SKU, the add-on and drive combination, and the current image and automation dependencies for your project.
Orange Pi 5 Plus Rockchip RK3588: eight-core 64-bit processor with four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 cores, up to 2.4 GHz; 4, 8, and 16 GB LPDDR4/4X configurations. Manufacturer lists an M.2 2280 SSD slot, eMMC socket, dual 2.5 GbE, Orange Pi OS, Android 12, Debian 11, and Ubuntu 22.04. Check the exact image and its maintained status, plus browser, runtime, driver, and container compatibility. The OS list does not prove every automation stack works on each image.
Radxa ROCK 5B / 5B+ Radxa documentation describes both as RK3588-based; memory options differ across variants. Documentation describes display and M.2 expansion features. Identify the exact model and revision before comparing RAM or storage, then verify the Linux image and dependencies you plan to use.
Banana Pi BPI-M7 RK3588 with four Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.4 GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores; 8, 16, and 32 GB RAM options. Documentation lists an M.2 Key M interface and dual 2.5 GbE. Check the exact memory variant, image support, storage compatibility, and the full browser automation stack.

These are specification-based comparison points, not a recommendation order. No board in this table has an established browser-automation benchmark or verified session capacity here.

How to select and validate a board

  1. Write down the workload. Record the target websites, whether jobs need screenshots or interaction, the number of pages you plan to run in parallel, and any requirement for a browser or container.
  2. Choose a specific board SKU and revision. Memory configurations vary. For Radxa, confirm whether you are considering a ROCK 5B or 5B+; for the other boards, confirm the exact memory option and storage setup.
  3. Confirm the image and dependencies. Check that a suitable Linux image is available and maintained for that exact board revision. Confirm the browser, automation runtime, driver where applicable, and container architecture on that image. Do not infer support from the processor alone.
  4. Build the storage and I/O plan. Match the storage interface and any required add-on or adapter to the board. Check that networking and other I/O meet the deployment’s needs.
  5. Test the actual automation job. Start with one representative page, then test the intended parallel workload. Observe whether pages finish, whether the browser or job fails, and whether the chosen setup remains stable during the run. This is necessary because published board specifications do not establish performance or thermal behavior for your workload.
  6. Compare complete, current build costs. Check the board, power, cooling, storage, adapter, enclosure, and shipping for the exact configuration and seller. Current prices and stock were not established for this comparison.

How much performance and reliability can the specifications predict?

They can narrow a shortlist, but not settle the purchase. A higher memory option gives you more capacity to allocate among the operating system and browser workload; it does not establish a specific number of pages or sessions. Processor core counts and clock rates are hardware facts, not browser-automation speed results. Likewise, a listed M.2 interface says something about expansion, not whether a particular storage setup improves your job.

Or skip the browser setup

If your job is to capture a website rather than run an interactive browser stack on hardware you manage, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to evaluate. Its screenshot API returns an image or PDF from one GET request. The service says it accepts cookie-consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. It also says bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. These capabilities replace some browser-capture setup; they do not make it an SBC or a substitute for automation that must interact with a site.

For a quick test with cURL, replace the example URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the request options and response behavior.

Common selection and setup mistakes

  • Picking by core count alone: core count does not establish browser speed or session capacity. Test the real pages and workload.
  • Assuming every listed OS supports your stack: verify browser, runtime, driver, and container support on the exact image and board revision.
  • Comparing model families without checking variants: memory and expansion details differ by SKU or board revision, especially across ROCK 5B/5B+ variants.
  • Budgeting for the board only: include storage, any required adapter or add-on, power, cooling, enclosure, and shipping; check current seller listings.
  • Expecting specifications to prove thermal stability: no sustained-load thermal results are established here. Validate the intended workload on the assembled system.
