How to Contact WordPress Support (WordPress.com, WordPress.org, and Self-Hosted Sites)

WordPress support depends on who hosts your site. Learn where to contact WordPress.com, a self-hosting provider, WordPress.org forums, or a commercial plugin and theme developer.

The right way to contact WordPress support depends on who hosts your site and what is failing. WordPress.com customers should start in the dashboard Help Center. Owners of self-hosted WordPress sites should contact their hosting company for server or account problems and use the WordPress.org support forums for WordPress software questions. Commercial themes and plugins are supported by their developers.

First, find out where your site is hosted

WordPress.com is a hosting provider. WordPress.org distributes the WordPress software and operates community support forums; it does not host your independently installed site. A site can use WordPress software while being hosted by a completely different company, so having a WordPress.com account or seeing a WordPress dashboard does not by itself prove that WordPress.com is your host.

If you are unsure

Use WordPress.com’s Site Profiler to check the host. You can also check your hosting invoices, welcome email, domain-management account, or the company named in your hosting control panel.

Contact WordPress.com support

For a feature, setup, billing, domain, account, or hosting problem

  1. Sign in to your WordPress.com account and open the site dashboard.
  2. Select the question-mark icon to open the Help Center.
  3. Choose the contact or help action and describe the problem to the support assistant.
  4. If you are on a paid plan and the assistant does not resolve the issue, request help from a Happiness Engineer when that option appears.

WordPress.com says it strives to respond to requests within 24 hours. That is a stated service target, not a guaranteed response or resolution time.

For a free WordPress.com plan

The official guidance points free-plan users to self-service support guides, courses, and the public WordPress.com forums rather than direct human support. Search those resources before posting a new question.

What WordPress.com support does not handle

  • Sites hosted by another company
  • Third-party themes or plugins that WordPress.com does not sell
  • Writing custom code for you
  • Creating or editing your site’s content and design as a service

Phone support

WordPress.com does not offer a customer-support phone number. Its support guide explains that WordPress.com issues often require links and screenshots, which work better through written support.

Choose the correct route for a self-hosted site

Problem Contact What to include
Server outage, hosting account, server settings, hosting bill, or access to the hosting account Your hosting provider Domain, hosting-account identifier, exact error, and when the failure began
WordPress installation, update, configuration, or core-software question The relevant WordPress.org support forum WordPress version, symptoms, steps to reproduce, and relevant system details
Commercial plugin or theme malfunction The developer’s official support channel Product name and version, license information if requested, error text, and a safe reproduction path
Lost access to a site hosted elsewhere Your hosting provider Proof of account ownership and the site or hosting account details requested by the provider

WordPress.org has separate forums for areas such as installation, fixing WordPress, development, and mobile apps. Select the forum that matches the software question. For paid themes and plugins, WordPress.org advises prioritizing the vendor’s official support route.

Recover a locked WordPress.com account

  1. Confirm that WordPress.com, rather than an independent host, hosts the site.
  2. Follow WordPress.com’s account-recovery instructions.
  3. If a recovery path sends you back to a login screen, use the Account Recovery form, which is available without signing in.

If the site is hosted elsewhere, account and site-access recovery must be handled by that hosting provider.

Prepare a support request that can be solved

Gather the following before opening a ticket or forum topic:

  • The full site address and, when relevant, the affected page or dashboard screen
  • The exact error message, copied accurately
  • When the issue started and what changed immediately beforehand
  • Numbered steps that reproduce the problem
  • Relevant screenshots or links
  • WordPress, theme, plugin, PHP, browser, or device versions when they relate to the fault

Remove passwords, API keys, payment information, private customer data, and other secrets. WordPress.com’s contact interface can accept diagnostic files and a zipped HAR file; include those only when support requests them or when they clearly document the failure.

Posting in a public WordPress.org forum

  1. Search the forum first for an existing solution.
  2. Write a descriptive title that names the symptom, not just “help.”
  3. Choose the site and the forum category that fit the question.
  4. Explain what you expected, what happened, and how to reproduce it.
  5. Enable email notifications so you see replies.

Do not publish credentials or private data in a public topic. Use a temporary, limited test account only when a trusted support process specifically requires one, and remove it afterward.

Quick decision guide

  • WordPress.com feature, billing, domain, account, or hosting: dashboard Help Center.
  • Free WordPress.com plan: support guides, courses, or WordPress.com forums.
  • Self-hosted server, hosting account, or access problem: hosting provider.
  • Self-hosted WordPress software question: WordPress.org support forum.
  • Commercial plugin or theme: product developer’s official support channel.

What to expect from each channel

Private support is appropriate for account, billing, domain, and security-sensitive details. Public forums are useful for general WordPress questions and searchable solutions, but never expose secrets there. Human support eligibility on WordPress.com depends on the plan, and the provider’s 24-hour wording is an aim rather than a performance guarantee. Independent hosts and commercial vendors set their own hours, channels, and response policies.
