A reliable WordPress maintenance routine has four parts: keep core, themes, plugins and PHP current; make restorable backups before risky changes; use Site Health to find critical problems; and test the pages and workflows that matter to your visitors. Set the timing to your publishing frequency, traffic, and business risk rather than following a one-size-fits-all calendar.

How often should you maintain a WordPress site?

Use a risk-based schedule. A busy store, membership site, news site or lead-generation site needs more frequent checks than a rarely changed brochure site.

When What to do Who needs this cadence
Weekly or more often Check dashboard updates and security notices; confirm the homepage and key journeys load; review backup and uptime alerts. Active, high-traffic or revenue-dependent sites
Before every update or server change Create and verify a restorable backup, apply the change, then test important pages and workflows. Every site
Monthly or quarterly Open Tools → Site Health; resolve critical issues; verify backup recency and restoration; test forms, checkout, login and performance signals. All sites, with frequency adjusted for risk
Every few months or after major content changes Review 404s and important links, clean spam and unneeded assets, and refresh stale content. Sites with regular publishing or frequent structural changes

These intervals are practical operating recommendations, not mandatory WordPress policy. Increase the frequency when you publish often, process transactions, handle personal data, or have a history of failed updates.

Back up before you change anything important

WordPress recommends regular backups, with frequency based on how often the site changes. A useful backup must be restorable, not merely reported as “complete.” Keep a copy separate from the live server so a compromised or failed host does not destroy both.

What a complete backup contains

  • Database: posts, pages, settings, users, orders and form entries.
  • Files: wp-content, uploads, themes, plugins and any custom files.
  • Configuration details: the PHP version, WordPress version, active theme, important server settings and recovery credentials stored securely.

Pre-update backup checklist

  1. Run a fresh database and file backup.
  2. Confirm the backup has finished and can be downloaded or accessed independently of the site.
  3. Keep at least one recent copy off the production server.
  4. Know the restoration procedure or your host’s recovery contact before starting.
  5. For a high-impact site, test restoration in a staging environment or separate location.

A backup is part of the change plan, not a substitute for testing. If an update fails, stop making additional changes and restore the last known-good copy using your documented procedure.

How to update WordPress safely

The latest major WordPress release is the only officially supported major version. Older branches may receive security backports as a courtesy, but WordPress offers no guaranteed support window, fixed lifetime or long-term-support release. Keep core current and read the release notice in your dashboard.

Dashboard one-click updates

For most site owners, use the administration dashboard. WordPress describes one-click updating as the easiest method.

  1. Make and verify a restorable backup.
  2. Open Dashboard → Updates.
  3. Update WordPress core, then plugins and themes, or apply the available updates in the order shown.
  4. Visit the homepage and several representative pages.
  5. Test the site’s critical journey: for example, search and checkout, a contact form, membership login, publishing, or booking.
  6. Review error logs, uptime alerts and Site Health if anything behaves differently.

Plugin and theme auto-updates can reduce delay, but enable them only when you can monitor results and recover quickly. Keep automatic changes covered by regular backups and verify critical pages after they run.

When manual updating is appropriate

Manual updates provide file-level control for administrators who need a controlled deployment, staging workflow or a recovery plan that the dashboard cannot provide. Follow the official WordPress procedure for the version you are installing. Do not edit core files directly: those changes are overwritten by updates and make future troubleshooting harder.

If an update breaks the site

  • Check whether the failure began immediately after a particular plugin, theme or core update.
  • Use your host’s staging or recovery tools, or restore the verified pre-update backup.
  • Temporarily disable the suspected extension only if you have a safe administrative or hosting method.
  • Review PHP and server error logs, then contact the host or developer with the exact error and change time.
  • Do not repeatedly update or downgrade components without a backup and a clear rollback point.

Use Site Health as a diagnostic checkpoint

Open Tools → Site Health regularly. The screen separates Critical issues, Recommended improvements and passed tests. Review critical items first, then work through lower-priority recommendations.

What to look for

  • Available WordPress, plugin and theme updates.
  • PHP version and whether it is suitable for the current WordPress release.
  • REST API, loopback and other connectivity tests.
  • Security warnings, inactive components and filesystem problems.
  • Performance notices, scheduled-event failures and configuration warnings.

Site Health is a diagnostic aid, not proof that every business workflow works. A green screen cannot confirm that a payment, form notification, membership renewal or editor workflow succeeds, so test those paths separately.

What PHP version does WordPress need in 2026?

According to the WordPress Core clarification published May 22, 2026, PHP 8.3 is the minimum recommended version and PHP 7.4 is the minimum supported version since WordPress 7.0. WordPress 6.9 and 7.0 are documented as fully supporting PHP 8.5. Requirements can change, so check the current WordPress and host documentation when scheduling a change.

PHP is controlled at the server level by your hosting provider. Before changing it:

  1. Ask the host which PHP versions are available and how to switch or roll back.
  2. Back up the database and files.
  3. Update WordPress, the active theme and plugins.
  4. Check that each theme and plugin supports the target PHP version; WordPress compatibility alone is not enough.
  5. Change PHP during a monitored period, then test front-end pages, the editor, forms, login and transactions.
  6. Roll back through the host if the site produces fatal errors, and contact the extension vendor or developer.

The WordPress Core team’s formulation is: “The minimum recommended PHP version remains at 8.3. The minimum supported PHP version is 7.4 since WordPress 7.0.”

Housekeeping that prevents gradual failures

Links and 404 errors

Review important internal and external links every few months and after navigation or permalink changes. Prioritize links in high-traffic pages, conversion paths and evergreen guides. Fix or redirect URLs rather than deleting content blindly.

Spam, accounts and unused components

Clear comment and form spam, review unfamiliar administrator accounts, and remove plugins or themes that are genuinely unused. Keep an inactive default theme when your recovery plan requires one, and remove anything you cannot identify or maintain.

Content quality

Refresh outdated instructions, screenshots, prices, compatibility statements and internal links. Check that forms still deliver mail and that legal, contact and accessibility information remains accurate.

Self-managed maintenance or managed hosting?

Neither model is automatically safer. The deciding factor is whether the people responsible can monitor changes and restore the site.

Factor Self-managed Managed hosting or maintenance service
Response time Depends on your availability and skills. May provide an operations team or defined response window; verify the contract.
Backups and restore You choose storage, retention and testing. May include backups and restore assistance; confirm frequency, retention and whether restores are included.
PHP control You coordinate changes with the host or manage the server. The provider may handle version changes; confirm compatibility testing and rollback.
Monitoring You configure uptime, logs and alerts. Monitoring may be bundled, but check what is actually watched and who receives alerts.
Scope and cost More control, but your time is the hidden cost. Less operational work, with scope and fees defined by the agreement.

Whichever model you choose, ask for evidence of successful restores, the exact backup retention, update approval process, PHP policy, monitoring coverage and exit access to your data.

A practical 2026 maintenance checklist

  • Core, plugins and themes are current, with the latest major WordPress release preferred.
  • A recent backup exists in a separate location and has a tested restoration path.
  • Tools → Site Health has no unresolved critical issue.
  • The host’s PHP version meets the 2026 guidance and extensions are compatible.
  • Homepage, navigation, search and the site’s main conversion journey work.
  • Forms, email delivery, login, checkout or membership functions have been tested where relevant.
  • Uptime, error and security alerts are reviewed by a named person.
  • Broken links, spam, unused components and stale content are handled on a recurring schedule.
  • Rollback contacts and procedures are documented before the next risky change.
