To view a WordPress backup as working pages, restore its files and database into a local WordPress environment, then open the local site address in your browser. A backup folder alone usually cannot be opened as a website: WordPress content and settings are stored in a separate database as well as in files.
Check what is in the backup first
A WordPress backup normally has two parts: the site files and its database. WordPress’s backup guidance describes these as the database and files. Files can include WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, and configuration. Posts, pages, comments, settings, and other site data are stored in the database.
Inspect the archive for a database export such as .sql (which may be compressed), a wp-content directory, and wp-config.php. A directory of WordPress files does not generally contain the separate database. Conversely, an SQL dump does not include themes, plugins, or media files, so neither incomplete backup can necessarily recreate the original appearance and functionality.
- Files and database: the best starting point for a complete restoration. Use files and a database dump from the same backup set or date.
- Files only: the site may be missing its posts, pages, settings, and other database content.
- Database only: content may be present, but the theme, plugins, and uploaded media needed to reproduce the site may be absent.
- Plugin-specific archive: formats such as
.wpressmay need to be imported with the creating plugin or a compatible app rather than extracted like a regular folder.
Keep an untouched copy of the backup and restore from a duplicate. WordPress’s handbook recommends keeping 3–5 recent backups in different locations; that is general guidance, not a guarantee that any particular backup will restore successfully.

Choose a restoration method
WordPress lists local development options including Studio, wp-env, VVV, XAMPP, MAMP, DDEV, and Lando. The right choice depends on your operating system, familiarity with databases and command-line tools, and how much control you want over the server environment. The two approaches below cover a guided import and a manual setup.
| Approach | Backup compatibility | Setup and control | Runtime matching |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress Studio import | Studio documents imports from .tar.gz and .zip, including certain ZIPs from Local and WordPress Playground and .wpress from All-in-One WP Migration. |
Guided workflow; less direct server and database setup than a manual stack. | Depends on the local environment; it does not guarantee a match with the original production server. |
| Manual local stack, such as XAMPP | Can be used with WordPress files and a database dump that you can place and import yourself. | More setup, but direct control over the local database, files, and URL adjustments. | Runtime and configuration can be adjusted, but matching production still requires knowing its environment. |
Option 1: Import with WordPress Studio
Studio’s documented workflow supports a new site imported from a .tar.gz or .zip backup. Its documentation lists .wpress archives from All-in-One WP Migration, ZIPs from the Local app, and ZIPs from WordPress Playground in this workflow. Check the current Studio import instructions for supported formats and steps.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- In Studio, add a site and choose Import from a backup.
- Select the backup file, enter a site name, and adjust advanced settings if needed.
- Add the site, then open its local address in a browser when the import finishes.
For a backup not created with Jetpack, Studio also documents a manually prepared ZIP layout: place the database dump in sql/, the relevant content directories under wp-content/, and wp-config.php in the import directory. Follow Studio’s instructions for the exact archive preparation rather than assuming any ZIP will import.
For an existing Studio site, the documentation supports .tar.gz, .zip, or .sql imports, but their effects differ: a ZIP or tarball replaces the site, while SQL imported into an existing site is added on top of its database. Use a fresh or disposable local site if you do not want to risk existing local data.

Option 2: Restore files and database manually
WordPress’s Test Driving WordPress guide gives an example using XAMPP and phpMyAdmin. The exact menus and defaults depend on your operating system and stack, but the restoration sequence is the same: run a local web server and database, put the files in the server’s web root, import the dump, and connect WordPress to that database.
- Make a working copy. Leave the original backup unchanged in case the archive or database needs to be restored again.
- Install and start a local server stack. Use a local development environment such as XAMPP; start its web server and MySQL or MariaDB service.
- Put the WordPress files in the web root. Extract or copy the site files into a directory served by the local stack. Keep the site’s
wp-contentand configuration files with the WordPress installation. - Create a local database. Use the stack’s database tool, such as phpMyAdmin, to create a database for the restored site.
- Set the local database connection. Edit the local copy of
wp-config.phpsoDB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, andDB_HOSTmatch the database and credentials configured locally. - Import the SQL dump. In phpMyAdmin, select the local database and import the backup’s SQL file. If the dump is compressed, use a format the import tool supports or decompress a copy first.
- Open the local site. Visit the local URL for the installation in your browser. WordPress’s example uses
127.0.0.1followed by the installation directory.
Handle the old domain and local URLs carefully
A restored database may still refer to the production domain, which can cause redirects back to the live site or prevent images and other assets from loading locally. WordPress’s XAMPP example instructs readers to change the old URL in the SQL file before importing. That illustrates the need to account for a domain change, but a simple text replacement is not safe for every database: WordPress data can include structured or serialized values whose stored lengths must remain valid.

Work on a copy and use a migration-aware search-and-replace method for complex sites. The cited WordPress guide does not cover every modern serialization edge case. If the site redirects away from localhost, check its home and site URLs and verify that the local URL replacements were applied correctly.

- Verify completeness and format. Confirm that you have both the files and a database dump, or identify the plugin-specific format and its compatible importer.
- Check that files and database belong together. A mismatch between backup dates can produce missing media or inconsistent content.
- Check the database connection and import. Compare the values in
wp-config.phpwith the local database settings, and confirm that the dump imported without errors. - Investigate redirects or missing images. Review the site URLs and local URL replacements if the browser leaves the local address or assets fail to load.
- Check themes, plugins, and uploads. Missing styles or behavior may mean those files were not included or were not restored to the expected directories.
- Compare local and production environments. Different PHP versions, server configuration, plugin availability, or file paths can change behavior without meaning the backup itself is corrupt.
What to expect from a local restoration
A local copy lets you inspect pages and experiment without changing the public site. It is a development environment, not proof that the restored site will behave exactly as it did in production. WordPress’s local development documentation describes local environments as a way to work on a site without interrupting its live version; differences in runtime and configuration can still affect what you see.
