Current sizing guides describe the profile tile as a centered 3:4 crop. That pixel size is practical guidance from secondary sources, not a pixel dimension officially published by Meta. Keep faces, logos and essential text in the center, then verify the crop in Instagram’s profile preview before publishing.
Instagram thumbnail size at a glance
Your Instagram post has two important presentations:
- The feed or post view: the uploaded composition is shown when someone opens the post, subject to Instagram’s display and interface.
- The profile grid: the thumbnail is presented in the reported centered 3:4 portrait shape.
Because these views can crop the same image differently, exporting at the right dimensions is only half the job. Composition and preview checking matter just as much.

Treat the ratios as the more durable guidance and the pixel counts as working recommendations.

Why the profile thumbnail and post can look different
Instagram’s profile grid is a collection of small, uniformly shaped tiles. A post designed for a different ratio must be reframed to fit that tile. The opened post can preserve more of your original framing, while the grid preview emphasizes a centered portion.
This creates a practical choice:
- Use 3:4 when a consistent profile grid is the priority.
- Use 4:5 when feed presence and familiar portrait-post sizing matter more, while protecting the sides for the profile crop.
- Use 1:1 when your design depends on a square, but place critical details away from the top and bottom.
- Use landscape only when the wide composition is essential; expect the profile tile to show much less of it.
What “centered crop” means for design
A centered crop keeps the middle of the image and removes material near the edges. The exact visible boundary can vary with Instagram’s current app behavior and preview treatment, so do not treat a mathematical safe-area estimate as a guarantee. A live preview is the final check.
How to compose an image that survives the 3:4 crop
Keep the subject central
Place faces, products and the visual focal point near the center of the 1080 × 1440 canvas. Avoid putting the only recognizable feature against an edge that may disappear in the thumbnail.
Protect text and logos
Keep headlines, prices, watermarks and logos inside the central portion. If you are adapting a 4:5 design, leave additional breathing room on the left and right because the reported profile crop is narrower than the uploaded post.
Design for the smallest view
Grid thumbnails are small. Use strong contrast, short wording and a subject that remains identifiable when reduced. Thin borders and fine print can vanish even when they technically remain inside the crop.
Check the complete profile row
A thumbnail can look acceptable by itself but awkward beside neighboring posts. If you plan a color sequence, panorama or checkerboard layout, preview the entire profile and confirm that each tile remains legible.

Choosing between 3:4, 4:5 and square
Choose 1080 × 1440 (3:4) for grid-first work
This is the current guide-based recommendation when the profile tile is the primary destination. It reduces the need to design for a second crop. It is especially useful for quote graphics, product cards and portraits where vertical space is valuable.
Choose 1080 × 1350 (4:5) for a conventional portrait feed post
4:5 remains a common portrait format. The trade-off is horizontal safety: the reported 3:4 profile tile is narrower relative to the post, so edge content may be trimmed. Build with side margins or place the final title and logo closer to the center.
Choose 1080 × 1080 (1:1) for square-native artwork
Square remains usable, but it should not be assumed to display identically in the profile tile. Keep essential information away from the top and bottom, and inspect the thumbnail before you commit to a scheduled post.
Choose 1080 × 566 (1.91:1) only for genuinely wide scenes
Landscape photography, charts or banners may need this shape in the feed. A portrait-oriented profile tile cannot show the full width, so use a strong central subject or prepare a separate cover composition.
A reliable workflow for exporting and checking a thumbnail
- Pick the destination: decide whether feed readability, profile-grid consistency or a planned multi-post layout comes first.
- Create the canvas: use 1080 × 1440 for a grid-first 3:4 design, or the 4:5, square or landscape dimensions that match your source artwork.
- Set a central safe area: move faces, logos and must-read text inward; leave extra side margin on 4:5 designs and extra top/bottom margin on square designs.
- Export a high-quality image: retain the intended aspect ratio and inspect the result at both full size and thumbnail size.
- Open Instagram’s publishing preview: check the feed framing and the profile-grid thumbnail. Do not rely on the export dimensions alone.
- Adjust and repeat: if a face, word or logo is clipped, revise the composition rather than merely changing the filename or compression setting.
- Review after publishing: confirm the live profile row, especially if the post is part of a visual sequence.
Instagram’s interface can change. The preview in the current app is the authoritative check for your account at publishing time.
Practical templates for common designs
Quote card
Build at 1080 × 1440, center the quote block and keep the author line away from the edges. Test at thumbnail size so line breaks remain readable.
Product announcement
Place the product and short name centrally. Keep price, launch date and logo inside the same central zone; do not put a call to action only at the extreme bottom or side.

Portrait photograph
Leave room around the head and shoulders. A face near the top edge can be compromised by a crop, while a centered face usually survives both the opened post and the profile tile.
Carousel cover
Design the first slide as an independent thumbnail. A detailed second slide cannot repair a cover whose title is clipped in the grid.
How to inspect the live crop without guessing
The simplest method is Instagram’s own preview: begin creating the post, review the feed framing, switch to the profile preview if offered, and reposition or resize before sharing. For a public profile, you can also capture the rendered page and inspect the actual tile at desktop and mobile viewport sizes.

Troubleshooting thumbnail problems
The title is cut off in the grid
Cause: the text sits outside the centered crop or too close to an edge. Fix: move the entire text block inward and recheck the profile preview; changing only the output resolution will not restore missing content.
The feed looks right but the profile tile does not
Cause: the design was optimized for 4:5, square or landscape rather than the reported 3:4 tile. Fix: create a 3:4 master, or redesign the cover with a central safe area.
A face or product is clipped
Cause: the focal point is near a crop boundary. Fix: reduce the subject slightly, add canvas space and center it before exporting again.
A multi-post grid no longer aligns
Cause: neighboring posts use different ratios or the profile preview trims each tile differently. Fix: standardize the source canvas and test the whole row in the live profile preview.

An automated screenshot shows a consent wall or blank page
Cause: the page needs interaction, a wait condition or access that a simple request does not have. Fix: use a capture service with consent handling, selector or network-idle waits, and inspect its page-verdict headers. Instagram may also restrict or alter publicly rendered content, so do not treat an automated capture as proof of what the logged-in app will show.

Remember that a successful web screenshot is not the same as an Instagram publishing guarantee. Login state, private accounts, regional behavior and app-only controls can change what is visible. Keep the final decision in the Instagram client where the post will actually be published.
What is officially specified—and what is not
The sources reviewed do not establish an official Meta pixel specification for feed posts or the profile-grid thumbnail.
