This approach scales far better than editing each product ad hoc.
1. Inventory and standardize the catalog before you shoot
Begin with a catalog spreadsheet or database containing SKU, product name, variants, dimensions, color, image status, and intended sales channels. Give every original asset a stable filename such as SKU_view_variant_v001.ext. Keep camera originals and retouched masters in a read-only archive; make resized or compressed derivatives in separate folders.
Adobe Commerce documentation notes that large catalogs can require hundreds or thousands of images, so a naming convention and organized originals prevent misplaced files and accidental overwrites. Use one visual standard for crop, background, camera height, and lighting across the entire catalog.
Define the visual standard
- Choose a crop ratio (square is a practical default for many storefront grids).
- Set the product’s apparent size in frame, such as occupying roughly the same percentage of the canvas for every SKU.
- Choose a background treatment: pure white for a conventional catalog, or a documented brand color where the channel permits it.
- Record camera height, distance, focal length, light positions, exposure, white balance, and retouching rules.
- Decide which views are mandatory: hero, rear, side, detail, scale, packaging, and lifestyle where useful.
2. Build an inexpensive, repeatable photography setup
You do not need a studio to produce consistent catalog images. A table near a window can work for small products; controlled lights make results easier to repeat when weather or time of day changes.

Essential equipment
- A camera or modern phone that can lock focus, exposure, and white balance.
- A sturdy tripod. Shopify specifically recommends keeping the camera and tripod in the same position throughout a shoot.
- White poster board for a low-cost background, or a reusable paper sweep for a seamless professional backdrop.
- One or two continuous lights or flashes with diffusion.
- A white reflector card to bounce light into shadow areas.
- Ruler, color card, clamps, tape, and a cleaning kit.
Place the product far enough from the background to avoid strong shadows. Curve the paper sweep so the horizon disappears. Position the main light to one side and use the reflector on the opposite side for gentle fill. Avoid mixed color temperatures; daylight plus a warm household bulb can create difficult-to-correct casts.
Lock the variables
Mount the camera, mark tripod legs and product placement with tape, and use manual or locked exposure when possible. Keep lens height and angle fixed. Photograph one reference item at the start of each session so you can detect drift in color, scale, or framing later.
3. Capture an image set that answers buying questions
One attractive photograph is rarely enough for a catalog. Start with a clear hero image, then add views that remove uncertainty about the item.
Hero image
Use the cleanest three-quarter or front view as the first image. Shopify treats the first media item as the featured or main item, so this frame commonly appears in collection grids, search results, and social previews. Keep the product large enough to recognize at thumbnail size while leaving consistent breathing room.

Detail and function views
- Close-up of materials, texture, controls, connectors, labels, or safety markings.
- Rear, side, underside, or opened views when they reveal construction or compatibility.
- Scale reference using a hand or familiar object only when it is accurate and permitted by the channel.
- Packaging and included accessories, clearly separated from items sold separately.
- Lifestyle or use-context images that show the actual product without implying unsupported performance.
For products with color or size variants, keep the camera and lighting fixed and document which frames correspond to which SKU. Never use an AI-generated or composited detail that changes a button, port, texture, color, or included component.
4. Edit without losing the master
Process RAW files or the highest-quality originals first. Correct white balance, exposure, lens distortion, dust, and background edges consistently. Retouch scratches or sensor spots, but do not remove genuine product features. Save a layered master (or an uncompressed export) and generate delivery files from it.
Recommended folder structure
/originals/SKU/— camera files and scans./masters/SKU/— color-corrected, retouched high-resolution files./exports/shopify/SKU/,/exports/marketplace/SKU/— channel-specific renditions./archive/approved/— files approved for publication, with revision numbers.
Preserving the master matters because repeated JPEG resizing and re-saving compounds artifacts. Export a new rendition whenever a platform needs a different crop, quality level, or format.
5. Export dimensions, formats, and roles for each channel
There is no universal “best” size. Check the current rules for every storefront, marketplace, email system, and ad network before exporting. Shopify’s current product-media guidance allows product and collection images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels and under 20 MB; square images around 2048 × 2048 pixels usually display well. Shopify supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, and other image types, and its theme CDN can select formats such as WebP or AVIF when supported. Treat these as Shopify-specific guidance, not a limit for every service.

Adobe Commerce defines thumbnail, small, base, and swatch roles. Its examples use about 470 × 470 pixels for small images and 1100 × 1100 pixels for base images when zoom is desired; these are examples for that platform, not universal requirements. Assign the correct role instead of uploading one file and expecting every component to use it properly.
Shopify media limits and ordering
Shopify allows up to 250 images, 3D models, or videos per product. Put the strongest hero first, then order supporting views logically: alternate angles, details, scale, packaging, and video or 3D media. Confirm current limits if your store uses an updated plan or theme.
6. A production workflow for hundreds of SKUs
- Prepare: freeze the SKU list, clean products, charge batteries, format cards, and print a shot list.
- Calibrate: photograph a reference item and confirm framing, white balance, background, and shadow density.
- Shoot in batches: group items with similar size, finish, or color so lighting and camera settings stay stable.
- Log immediately: record SKU, variant, take numbers, defects, and missing views while the item is on set.
- Back up: copy originals to two separate storage locations before formatting the card.
- Process consistently: apply a base correction, then make only product-specific adjustments.
- Quality-check: inspect sharpness, color, edges, labels, accessories, and crop at both full size and thumbnail size.
- Export and publish: create channel renditions, assign roles, upload, and verify the live page on desktop and mobile.
7. Choosing DIY, an agency, or AI-assisted editing
Score each approach against the same criteria rather than choosing by headline price:
- Consistency across SKUs: Can it hold camera angle, crop, background, and color steady?
- Functional accuracy: Can it show controls, ports, materials, and included parts without alteration?
- Production speed: How quickly can it handle a batch and reshoots?
- Cost per SKU: Include setup, labor, retouching, shipping, and revisions.
- Channel compatibility: Can it deliver each required dimension, format, role, and media limit?
DIY is attractive when products are available locally and the standard can be repeated. An agency can supply lighting, styling, and throughput but adds coordination and shipping. AI-assisted tools can accelerate background cleanup or resizing, but review every generated result for inaccurate geometry, text, color, or accessories. For regulated, technical, or high-consideration products, factual accuracy should outweigh decorative speed.

8. Troubleshooting common catalog-image failures
Images look different from SKU to SKU
Check tripod marks, focal length, product placement, white balance, and light distance. Re-shoot a reference item and use it to match the batch rather than trying to correct radically different lighting in post.
White backgrounds are gray or uneven
Increase separation from the background, light the sweep independently if possible, and avoid clipping product edges. A reflector can fill shadows, but it cannot fix a background that is poorly exposed.
Products are sharp in one batch and soft in another
Use a tripod, lock focus after placing the product, increase shutter speed or light level, and inspect at 100 percent before moving to the next SKU.
Colors do not match the physical product
Remove mixed lighting, set a custom white balance, photograph a color reference, and compare the approved image with the actual item under neutral light. Do not “correct” a variant into another color.

The platform rejects an upload
Check pixel dimensions, megapixels, file size, extension, color mode, transparency support, and filename characters against that platform’s current documentation. Export a new derivative rather than altering the master.
Important details disappear in thumbnails
Use a simpler hero composition, increase product scale within the crop, and move explanatory details into separate images. Test the listing grid on a phone as well as a large monitor.

- Every filename maps unambiguously to one SKU and view.
- Hero, detail, variant, and packaging views match the shot list.
- Camera angle, crop, background, and lighting are consistent.
