Choose the insertion method that fits your editor, then check the published comparison on desktop and mobile and test keyboard operation.
Choose how to add the comparison
Comparison plugins display two images together with a movable divider that reveals more of one image or the other. The right way to insert one depends on how you build your page.
- Gutenberg block: Add a comparison directly in the block editor. The Before After Image Comparison listing instructs users to search for “Image Compare” in the editor. Amitry also describes adding a Before After Compare block and selecting the two images.
- Saved slider and shortcode: Create a comparison in the plugin’s dashboard, save it, then paste its generated shortcode into a shortcode-capable area. BefTer and Amitry describe this kind of reusable setup.
- Page-builder widget: If you use Elementor or another builder, check that the plugin supports it and whether the integration is included in the free version. BefTer and Amitry describe Elementor widgets; Image Split lists WooCommerce and Elementor integrations as premium features.
Some plugins offer more than one insertion method. Image Split, for example, lists a Gutenberg block, shortcode, and block-based widget areas. Check the current plugin listing for the exact options and feature boundaries.
How to add a before-and-after slider
- Choose the insertion method. Decide whether you will use a Gutenberg block, a shortcode, or a builder widget.
- Check the plugin listing. Review its current WordPress and PHP requirements, maintenance information, compatibility details, and whether the feature you need is free or premium.
- Install and activate the plugin. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for the plugin, select Install Now, then select Activate.
- Create the comparison. Depending on the plugin, add its block to the page or create a saved slider in the plugin dashboard. Select the before and after images.
- Set available display options. Configure the divider’s starting position, orientation, labels, and width if the plugin provides those controls.
- Insert and publish. Add the block, widget, or generated shortcode to the intended page, then publish or update it.
- Check the live page. Preview it at desktop and phone widths. Test dragging the divider on a touchscreen and, if keyboard support is claimed, try operating it with the keyboard.
For a specific example, BefTer’s WordPress.org listing describes installing and activating the plugin, creating a slider under “Before After Sliders,” uploading the image pair, saving the settings, and embedding the shortcode or using its block or widget. Follow the current listing and interface, since plugin screens can change.

What to check before choosing a plugin
Plugin listings describe different controls and integrations, and they do not provide a standardized independent comparison of speed or usability. Compare the features you actually need:
- Editor support: Confirm it works with your block editor, shortcode location, or page builder.
- Reuse and layout: Check whether you can save comparisons for reuse or arrange multiple pairs as a gallery.
- Display controls: Verify the available orientation, divider position, labels, and sizing options.
- Keyboard and touch interaction: Look for explicit details about keyboard controls and mobile dragging rather than assuming a slider is operable.
- Compatibility and fallback: Review the plugin’s current compatibility information and what visitors see if its JavaScript does not run.
- Free-versus-paid features: Check whether the block, shortcode, gallery, or builder integration you want requires a premium tier.
For examples of the differences described by vendors, Amitry lists arrow-key, Home, and End controls and ARIA slider semantics; VisualCompare’s changelog describes keyboard and touch improvements and a no-JavaScript fallback; and Image Split lists keyboard support and ARIA attributes. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent accessibility audit. Test the actual published page with keyboard navigation and assistive technology, and check it with your theme and builder.

Check the result on mobile and with a keyboard
A plugin’s claim that its slider is responsive or compatible does not establish that it works in every theme, builder, browser, and device combination. After publishing, check that both images display as intended, the divider is easy to move on a phone, and labels remain understandable. If the plugin claims keyboard support, navigate to the comparison and try its stated controls; if it does not respond as expected, choose another plugin or provide another way to understand the image changes.
