If the site prevents direct saving, capture the visible image with Firefox Screenshots. For anything you plan to publish or redistribute, downloading is only the technical step: check the image’s license and follow its attribution and permission requirements.
Choose the right method first
Your best approach depends on whether you need the original file, a quick visual reference, or a lawful source for reuse.

Save a normal image directly in Chrome
- Open the webpage containing the image in Chrome.
- Place the pointer over the image and right-click it. On a touch device, use the equivalent long-press menu.
- Select Save Image As.
- Choose a destination folder, change the filename if useful, and click Save.
- Open the downloaded file to confirm that it is the expected image and that it has the correct extension.
Chrome puts the file in its configured download location. To change that location or make Chrome ask where each file should go, open Settings > Downloads. The downloaded filename and extension are clues, not proof of licensing or quality; check the file itself before using it.
When Save Image As is missing
A page may display a background image, an image inside a viewer, a canvas rendering, or an overlay that intercepts the context menu. A disabled menu does not make the image free to copy, and repeatedly bypassing a site’s access controls may violate its terms. For a legitimate visual reference, use the screenshot workflow below or obtain the source through the site owner.

Capture a visible image with Firefox Screenshots
Firefox Screenshots is the practical fallback when you need what is visibly rendered rather than the original asset.
- Open the page in Firefox and position the image or page region exactly as you want it captured.
- Open the Firefox Screenshots feature from the browser menu or its toolbar entry.
- Choose the selection tool and drag around the image or region.
- Adjust the selection if needed, then click Download.
- Find the resulting image in the folder Firefox uses for downloads.
Firefox documentation says the capture is saved as an image file in the normal Firefox download folder. You can also use Ctrl+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+S on macOS, when that shortcut is available in the capture interface.
Understand the fidelity trade-off
A screenshot records rendered pixels. It can include text, controls, charts, or an image that cannot be saved through the context menu, but it may be smaller than the source, affected by browser zoom, and missing content outside the viewport. It also captures overlays that are visible at the moment you select the region. If you need the original dimensions, metadata, transparency, or a lossless source file, request the asset from the site or use a direct download that the owner provides.
Find an image with a lawful reuse path
If your goal is a blog post, product, presentation, advertisement, or other public work, start with rights rather than with the download button.
- Open Google Images and search for the subject.
- Select Tools, then open Usage rights.
- Choose the option that best matches your intended use.
- Open a candidate image and select License details when that panel is available.
- Follow the license link to the source page, read the complete conditions, and download from the source where possible.
Google’s guidance treats the Usage rights filter and License details panel as ways to locate licensing information, not as a guarantee that every result is reusable. Confirm the requirements on the specific source page. A Creative Commons result may require credit, restrict commercial use, prohibit modifications, or impose other conditions. A commercial or other license may require payment.

Keep a rights record
For each image you intend to publish, save the source URL, creator name, license name and version, date accessed, and any required credit wording. Keep a copy of the license page or its relevant terms if the project will be maintained for a long time. This record helps you answer questions later when a search result changes or a page is removed.
Apply Creative Commons attribution correctly
CC BY 4.0 permits broad reuse when you meet its conditions. The required attribution includes:
- Appropriate credit to the creator.
- A link to the CC BY 4.0 license.
- An indication of changes you made, such as cropping, color adjustment, or translation.
A practical credit can identify the creator, title, source link, license link, and an edit note. Place it near the image or in a clearly connected credits section. Do not imply that the creator endorses your project.

Creative Commons also warns that a copyright license may not cover privacy, publicity, moral rights, trademarks, or other permissions. A recognizable person, logo, or artwork can therefore require additional clearance even when the file carries a Creative Commons notice. If you use the image in a way that would otherwise require permission and then break the license terms, the permission can terminate and infringement claims may follow.
What “free” means in different situations
Personal offline reference
Saving an image to study later is technically simple, but the site’s terms and local law still matter. Do not assume that a private copy gives you permission to upload it elsewhere.

Education and commentary
Educational or critical contexts can have different legal rules from commercial publication, and those rules vary by jurisdiction. Use the minimum portion needed, identify the source, and check the applicable exception rather than treating “educational” as an automatic exemption.
Commercial publication
Advertising, paid products, client work, monetized websites, and promotional social posts generally require a license that covers commercial use. Follow the source’s stated terms or obtain permission. Google’s filter can help you locate candidates, but the source license controls.
Export many images responsibly
One-by-one saving is appropriate for occasional downloads. For a collection you are authorized to obtain, an extension can automate repetitive clicks, but evaluate it before installation.
- Install only from a reputable extension store and check the publisher.
- Read requested permissions; an image-downloader does not normally need broad access to every account or form.
- Review privacy disclosures and update history.
- Confirm that automated requests are allowed by the site’s terms and robots or access policy where relevant.
- Keep a manifest of source URLs and licenses so downloaded files do not lose their provenance.
- Throttle requests and stop if the site returns bot checks, errors, or an explicit block.
Do not use automation to defeat CAPTCHAs, authentication, paywalls, or other technical restrictions. If the owner offers an export or media-download endpoint, use that instead.

Troubleshoot common export problems
The saved file is HTML or has the wrong extension
The page may have returned an error, a redirect, or a viewer document instead of an image. Open the file in a text editor or inspect its properties, then retry from the original image or source page. Do not simply rename an HTML response to .jpg.
The screenshot is blurry
Increase the browser window or page zoom only when it improves the rendered pixels, and capture at the image’s displayed size. A screenshot cannot recover detail that was never rendered. Obtain the original asset when resolution matters.

The image is covered by a popup
Close the popup if the page provides a close control, wait for the page to settle, or capture only the needed region after the overlay disappears. Do not click unfamiliar consent or download controls blindly.

The download never starts
Check the browser’s download permissions, available disk space, and configured download folder. A site may also require authentication or block the request; use its official download route rather than trying to circumvent that restriction.
