To make an image have no background, isolate the subject with a background-removal tool, refine the resulting mask, and export with transparency enabled. For most uses, a PNG is the safest raster format because it preserves transparent pixels. Do not rely on a white-looking editor canvas: place the exported file over a colored background or open it in another editor to confirm that the background is genuinely transparent.
What “no background” actually means
A background-free image is a cutout whose pixels outside the subject have zero opacity. It is not the same as a photograph with a white background, nor is it automatically produced by cropping the canvas. The transparent area can later reveal a slide color, web-page background, product-card color, or another image.
- Raster transparency: PNG is a practical choice for photos and pixel-based graphics. WebP can also preserve transparency when your destination supports it.
- Layered editing: A Photoshop document (PSD) keeps the original layer and editable mask for later changes.
- Vector artwork: Logos and illustrations may be better rebuilt as vector artwork, but a transparent PNG is usually the quickest deliverable from a photo.
Automatic removal finds an apparent foreground; it does not guarantee a perfect edge. Hair, fur, glass, smoke, shadows, and gaps between limbs need inspection at high zoom.
Before you remove the background
Choose the best source
Use the largest original image available and avoid repeatedly recompressing a JPEG. A clear separation between subject and background gives the selection algorithm more information. Adobe’s Photoshop guidance specifically says, “For best results, use high-contrast images.”

Decide what must remain
Identify fine details before clicking Remove Background: loose hair, thin straps, transparent containers, interior holes, cast shadows, and objects that overlap the main subject. Decide whether a shadow is part of the subject or should disappear; that choice affects your mask.
Photoshop desktop: remove the background non-destructively
- Open the image in Photoshop and select the correct image layer. Make sure the subject layer is active and unlocked.
- Open the Discover panel with the workspace search icon, or choose Help > Photoshop Help.
- Choose Browse > Quick Actions > Remove Background.
- Photoshop isolates the subject and creates a transparent result or a layer mask ready for compositing.
- Zoom in around hair, fur, fingers, wheels, and narrow gaps. Keep the mask rather than permanently erasing pixels so you can revise it.
Refine a Photoshop mask
Select the layer mask thumbnail and use the Brush tool. Paint with black on the mask to hide unwanted background; paint with white to restore subject detail. Use a soft brush for natural transitions and a hard, smaller brush for crisp product edges. Lower brush opacity when adjusting semi-transparent hair or a soft shadow. Inspect the cutout over both a light and a dark temporary layer: an edge that looks clean on white may show a pale halo on black.
Preserve an editable version
Save a PSD before export. Keep the original layer hidden beneath the masked layer when possible. This lets you correct an over-erased ear, logo, or strand without starting over.
Export a transparent file
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Select PNG and ensure transparency is retained in the export options.
- Export a copy, then verify it over a contrasting background in another application.
If the destination accepts WebP and requires a smaller web asset, export WebP with its alpha/transparency option enabled. Keep the PSD as the source of truth.

Correct missed or deleted areas
Use Erase to remove background that remains and Restore to bring back subject pixels that were removed. Work at a high zoom, especially around hair, fur, thin objects, and spaces between parts of the subject. If the tool cannot identify a clear subject, try a higher-contrast source or use Photoshop’s mask workflow instead.
Process several uploaded photos
Canva’s documented bulk workflow processes uploaded images from Projects. Its stated limits are up to 50 images per folder operation, photos under 9 MB, and images above 10 megapixels downscaled to 10 megapixels. Those are Canva product constraints, not a general rule for image editing. Only uploaded images are processed in that workflow.
Export from Canva with transparency
- Remove or delete any background element in the design.
- Choose Share > Download.
- Select PNG.
- Turn on Transparent background, then download.
Canva lists transparent-background export for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans. Canva Docs cannot be downloaded with a transparent background, so use a supported design type instead.
How to check that the background is really transparent
- Open a new document with a strong color such as blue or red.
- Place the exported PNG above that color.
- Look for a solid rectangle, white fringe, or missing interior holes.
- Open the file in a second editor or image viewer that displays a checkerboard or composited transparency.
A checkerboard in an editor is only a display convention, and a white canvas can be either a preview choice or actual white pixels. The colored-background test is the practical confirmation.
Fixing common edge problems
White or dark halo
Halos usually come from background-colored pixels mixed into the edge. Contract the mask slightly, feather it by a very small amount, or repaint the edge with a smaller brush. Check against the color the final design will use.

Hair and fur look cut off
Use a smaller, softer brush and restore individual strands on the mask. Avoid a hard global eraser; it removes natural semi-transparent detail.
Holes disappeared
Spaces inside handles, between limbs, or inside letters may be classified as subject. Paint those regions black on the mask (or use Canva’s Erase brush), then check at 100% and at the final display size.
Shadows look wrong
Choose deliberately: remove the original shadow for a clean catalog cutout, or retain it if the subject must appear grounded. If retained, mask it separately so its opacity can be adjusted.
Jagged or blurry outline
Work from a larger source, avoid repeated JPEG saves, and inspect at 100% rather than judging only a thumbnail. A very small final icon may need a simplified, cleaner outline instead of every hair strand.

Workflow for logos, presentations, and product images
Logo or icon
Remove the photographic background, inspect every counter and narrow opening, and export a transparent PNG. If the logo must scale to many sizes, recreate it as vector artwork after using the cutout as a reference.
Presentation or document
Use a transparent PNG so the slide or page theme remains visible. Test on both light and dark slide backgrounds before distributing the deck.
Product listing
Keep the product’s natural outline, remove distracting surroundings, and decide whether a controlled shadow is required by the marketplace. Export at the marketplace’s requested dimensions after the mask is finished, not before.

Troubleshooting checklist
- There is still a rectangle: Re-export as PNG with transparency enabled and test over a colored layer.
- The subject is partly missing: Restore the mask with white paint in Photoshop or Canva’s Restore brush.
- Background remains in gaps: Paint those holes out separately; automatic tools often prioritize the main silhouette.
- Canva will not process the file: Confirm you have a plan that includes Background Remover, keep the upload under 9 MB, and check whether its resolution exceeds the documented 10 MP handling limit.
- Edges look poor: Start with a higher-contrast, larger source and refine at 100% zoom.
- Transparency works in one app but not another: Confirm the destination supports alpha transparency and that you did not flatten the image onto white during export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a JPG transparent?
A JPG does not store an alpha channel. Remove the background in an editor and export the result as PNG (or another format that supports transparency).
Why does my transparent image look white?
The viewer may show transparency as white. Place the file over a colored layer or open it in another editor to distinguish a preview color from real white pixels.
Should I remove a product’s shadow?
It depends on the use. Remove it for a clean isolated catalog cutout; retain or recreate a controlled shadow when the product needs visual grounding.
