Match an image’s pixel dimensions to the space where it appears and the pixel density of visitors’ screens; then compress it until the file is as light as practical without visible damage. For responsive pages, provide several sizes so a phone does not have to download an image intended for a desktop display.
“Size” can mean pixel dimensions or file weight. Both matter, but neither has a universal target: the right choice depends on the image, its layout, its purpose, and how it will be delivered.
What should you size a website photo to?
Start with the image’s rendered dimensions in the page layout, often called its display slot. A useful baseline is to provide at least as many source pixels as the slot needs at the target device pixel ratio (DPR). DPR describes how many physical screen pixels correspond to one CSS pixel.
- 500 × 500 CSS-pixel slot at DPR 1: a 500 × 500-pixel source is a reasonable baseline.
- The same slot at DPR 2: a 1000 × 1000-pixel source can provide the extra detail those screens can display.
These are examples, not universal upload requirements. A responsive layout may give the same image different slot sizes on a phone and desktop. Cropping, aspect ratio, and the image’s detail also affect what source dimensions are appropriate. The current web.dev image-performance guidance explains sizing in relation to layout and DPR.

Size for the crop that will actually appear
If a page displays a landscape photo in a fixed square frame, the delivered image needs to support that crop—not merely the original camera image’s dimensions. Decide whether the image will be cropped with CSS or pre-cropped into variants, and check that important subjects remain visible at each breakpoint. Avoid uploading a huge original as the only file and assuming CSS scaling makes its transfer efficient.
How should you serve different screen sizes?
Use responsive image candidates rather than one oversized source for every visitor. The HTML srcset attribute lists available image widths; sizes describes the rendered slot width the browser should expect. The browser uses that information, together with its view of the device’s pixel density and circumstances, to choose a candidate. CSS still determines the displayed layout, so the sizes value should reflect the actual layout rather than simply repeat the largest file’s width.
<img

srcset="/images/venue-400.webp 400w,
/images/venue-800.webp 800w,
/images/venue-1200.webp 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 50vw"
alt="A sunlit dining room">
In this example, the layout is described as using the full viewport width up to 600 CSS pixels and half the viewport width above that. Change the expression to match your page’s real CSS. If it claims an image is narrower than it actually renders, the browser may choose an undersized source; if it claims the slot is much wider, visitors may download more pixels than needed.
How many variants should you create?
Three to five width variants is a common starting point in web.dev’s responsive-images guidance. It is not a mandated count: choose candidates around the sizes your layouts need, and inspect what the browser actually downloads. More variants can make the fit more precise, but also add files to store, markup to maintain, and possible cache entries. A small set of well-chosen candidates is often easier to operate than a large set of nearly identical widths.

Use responsive-image tooling or an image service when manually producing and maintaining variants no longer fits your workflow. web.dev names Cloudinary and Thumbor as examples of services used for responsive images and image manipulation. Automation can handle transformations, but does not remove the need to verify the result against your layout and quality requirements.
How large should the image file be in kilobytes?
There is no reliable rule such as “every photo must be under 100 KB.” A file’s weight depends on its pixel dimensions, image content, encoding format, compression settings, and acceptable visual quality. A detailed photograph, a flat illustration, and an image containing fine text behave differently under compression. Set a practical budget for your page if needed, then test the actual image at the dimensions and quality visitors will receive.
Compression is a trade-off. Lowering quality can reduce bytes, but lossy compression may produce visible artifacts. Inspect the result at its intended display size, paying particular attention to high-contrast edges, fine detail, and any text in the image. Do not treat quality numbers from different formats or encoders as equivalent: their scales and output can differ.
Choose a format for the image’s job
- WebP or AVIF: compare these modern raster formats for photographs and other raster images. They may deliver smaller files than older formats, but the result depends on the specific image and encoding settings. Keep fallbacks appropriate to the browsers your site must support.
- JPEG: can remain a suitable choice for photographs when it fits your delivery and compatibility needs. Compare the visual result and file weight against alternatives rather than assuming a format always wins.
- PNG: can suit images that need lossless representation or transparency, though another format may be more efficient for a particular use.
- SVG: use for suitable vector artwork such as scalable logos and diagrams, not as a substitute for photographic detail.
Google for Developers’ WebP documentation, last updated August 7, 2025, reports that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNG images, and lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Those are format-level comparisons, not guaranteed savings for your uploads. Actual results vary with the image and encoder.

A practical workflow for preparing and publishing photos
- Find the rendered slot. Inspect the page layout at relevant breakpoints and note the photo’s rendered width, height, and crop. Include the layouts visitors actually encounter, not just the desktop design.
- Choose a pixel target. Use the slot dimensions as a baseline, accounting for the DPR you intend to support. For a 500-pixel-wide slot, for example, 500 source pixels may be appropriate at DPR 1 and 1000 at DPR 2.
- Create a small set of useful widths. Generate candidates that suit the layout’s likely rendered sizes. Preserve the right crop and aspect ratio for each use.
- Compare formats and compression. Encode representative images in formats your delivery stack and supported browsers can handle. Compare file weight and inspect the visual result, especially edges, detail, and text.
- Wire candidates into the page. Use
srcsetto identify width candidates andsizesto describe the rendered slot. Keep the CSS layout consistent with that description. - Check the delivered result. Test the page at phone and desktop widths and inspect the image the browser serves. Run Lighthouse’s properly sized images audit to identify cases where the delivered image is larger than its display needs.
- Adjust from evidence. If a source looks soft, revisit its dimensions or compression. If it is much larger than its slot requires, add or select a more suitable candidate. Recheck the crop after any change.
Review the rendered page, not only the original upload. The browser may select a different candidate than expected, and CSS cropping can make the visible result differ from the source file. Lighthouse’s properly sized images audit is one useful check; it does not replace a visual quality review.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page so you can inspect how its images and layout appear in a browser. A screenshot does not measure image bytes or optimize the uploaded files, so use it alongside responsive-image and Lighthouse checks rather than as a substitute for them. The API accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Common image-sizing problems and fixes
- Images look blurry on high-density screens: check whether the chosen source provides enough pixels for the slot at the target DPR. Add a larger candidate if needed, then verify the browser can select it.
- Mobile visitors download unnecessarily large files: check that the page offers smaller width candidates and that
sizesdescribes the mobile slot accurately. - A supposedly responsive image still downloads the wrong size: compare the actual CSS-rendered width with the
sizesexpression. Remember thatsrcsetprovides options, whilesizesdescribes the expected slot; neither changes the CSS layout. - Compression creates halos, jagged edges, or damaged text: compare a higher-quality encode or a lossless format where appropriate. Inspect at normal display size as well as close up.
- Different images respond differently to the same setting: expected behavior. Tune compression per image or image class rather than assuming one encoder quality value works equally well for photos, artwork, and text-heavy graphics.
- Lighthouse flags an image as oversized: check the image’s rendered dimensions and selected resource, then provide or select a more appropriate candidate. The original upload size alone does not establish what the page serves.
What to remember when setting image budgets
Set pixel dimensions from the display slot and the DPR you want to support; use responsive candidates for layouts that change. Treat byte size as an optimization target constrained by visual quality, not as a universal upload limit. Format and compression decisions should be checked on the images themselves, and a final page review should confirm what the browser actually delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the image’s original camera resolution determine the right website size?
No. The relevant dimensions are those needed for the page’s rendered slot, crop, and target screen density; an original may need resizing or multiple responsive variants.
Are image quality values such as 80 comparable across formats?
Not reliably. Quality scales and encoders differ, so compare the resulting visual appearance and file weight for the specific image.
Does a screenshot tell me whether an image is optimized?
No. It can show the rendered appearance, but not whether the selected source has efficient dimensions or compression. Use delivery inspection and Lighthouse’s properly sized images audit for those checks.
