To resize an iPhone screenshot for the App Store, first choose the App Store Connect display group and portrait or landscape orientation. Resize or crop an authentic capture to one of Apple’s accepted pixel dimensions, preserve the interface’s proportions, export as JPEG, JPG, or PNG without transparency, and upload it to the matching iPhone screenshot set. Apple accepts several sizes rather than one universal iPhone dimension, so verify the current Screenshot specifications table before publishing.
Apple’s accepted iPhone screenshot dimensions
App Store Connect groups screenshots by display family and orientation. The following dimensions are currently listed examples; Apple’s complete table also includes older 4-inch and 3.5-inch families, so check the live specification for your app’s required sets.

Do not infer the required export size solely from the model name of the phone that produced the image. Match the screenshot to the display group shown in Apple’s current App Store Connect requirements and select an accepted dimension in the correct orientation.
File rules you must meet
- Use JPEG, JPG, or PNG.
- Remove the alpha channel; images cannot contain transparency.
- Upload between one and ten screenshots in an iPhone screenshot set.
- Keep portrait captures portrait and landscape captures landscape unless you deliberately rotate and recompose the image.
A screenshot that has the right width and height but still contains an alpha channel can be rejected. Flatten transparent layers against the intended background before export.

Resize an existing screenshot without distorting the app
- Identify the destination. In Apple’s Screenshot specifications, note the display group and orientation required for the version you are preparing.
- Inspect the source. Record its pixel dimensions and aspect ratio. A source with a different ratio cannot be stretched to fit without making text, icons, and controls look unnaturally wide or tall.
- Choose crop or resize. If the ratios match, resize proportionally to an accepted dimension. If they differ, crop excess edges while keeping important controls visible, or recapture the app at the target device size. Apple’s capture guidance explicitly allows resizing and cropping to match App Store requirements.
- Set exact pixel dimensions. Enter the target width and height in your image editor, with “lock aspect ratio” enabled during the initial resize. Perform any final crop before entering the exact output dimensions.
- Check the safe area. Review the status bar, navigation controls, modal dialogs, and text at 100% zoom. A crop that removes a button or clips a headline is not an acceptable marketing asset even if App Store Connect accepts the file.
- Flatten and export. Save as JPEG, JPG, or PNG with no transparency. Reopen the exported file and verify its pixel dimensions and color appearance.
When stretching is never appropriate
Do not independently change width and height to force a match. Stretching alters typography and circular controls, and it can make a genuine app capture appear misleading. Use a proportional resize, a considered crop, or a fresh capture instead.
When a crop changes the story
If cropping removes navigation, onboarding context, or a key result, recapture at the target display group. For screenshots that include device frames or promotional text, rebuild the composition at the destination canvas rather than trimming arbitrary edges.
Capture a clean source in Xcode
Apple documents two source methods: capture from Xcode’s Devices and Simulators (Device Hub) using a simulator, or capture from a connected physical device. A native capture avoids scaling artifacts introduced by photographing a screen or exporting a preview image.
- Open Xcode and its Devices and Simulators window.
- Select the simulator or connected iPhone that represents the display group you need.
- Navigate the app to the exact state you want reviewers and customers to see.
- Use the window’s screenshot control to save the capture.
- Repeat for each orientation and app state required by your listing.
After capture, apply the proportional resize or crop workflow above. Keep an untouched original for future device variants.

Choose between scaled and device-specific assets
Apple supports two practical approaches when the interface is the same across sizes.

Apple documents both methods but does not publish comparative conversion or performance data. Select the simplest method that keeps every important element legible and accurate.
Upload screenshots in App Store Connect
- Open App Store Connect and select My Apps.
- Choose the app and the version you are editing.
- Scroll to the iPhone screenshots section for the relevant localization.
- Drag in one to ten JPEG, JPG, or PNG files, or use the upload control.
- For device-specific or localized variants, open Media Manager and add the appropriate custom assets.
- Review each orientation and display group, then save the version.
Before submission, confirm that every required screenshot set is present. Apple’s app-screenshot documentation notes that missing required sizes can trigger an error at submission time, even if an earlier upload appeared successful.
Validate files before uploading
- Dimensions: width and height exactly match an accepted pair, not merely a similar ratio.
- Orientation: portrait and landscape are not interchangeable; landscape dimensions are the portrait pair reversed.
- Format: extension and actual encoding are JPEG, JPG, or PNG.
- Transparency: no alpha channel or hidden transparent layer remains.
- Content: no clipped controls, unreadable type, accidental debug overlays, or simulator chrome.
- Count: no more than ten images in a screenshot set.
- Coverage: all required device groups and localizations have assets, or you have intentionally chosen Apple’s scaling behavior.
Common problems and fixes
“Invalid screenshot dimensions”
Cause: the file’s pixel dimensions are not one of the accepted values for that display group, or width and height were reversed. Fix: return to Apple’s current table, set the exact pixel pair, and export again. Do not rely on the device’s marketing screen size alone.

The screenshot looks stretched
Cause: width and height were changed independently. Fix: restore the original, resize proportionally, then crop or recapture to reach the target canvas.
PNG upload is rejected despite correct dimensions
Cause: the PNG contains an alpha channel or transparent pixels. Fix: flatten it onto an opaque background and export a new PNG or JPEG.
Important content is cut off
Cause: a crop was made without checking the app’s safe areas. Fix: undo the crop, adjust the composition, or capture directly on the target display group.
A smaller device set is missing
Cause: the version relies on automatic scaling but the highest-resolution asset does not satisfy the required set, or a custom set was never added. Fix: verify the current required groups and use Media Manager for any custom assets.

New device specifications appear, but upload is unavailable
Apple’s September 9, 2026 release notes added specifications for iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and Apple Watch Series 12. The note says iPhone Duo upload support would become available later in 2026. A published specification is not proof that the upload control is live; check the current App Store Connect interface before promising support for that family.
