How to Disable Google Fonts in WordPress (and Keep Fonts Locally)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To disable Google Fonts requests in WordPress, first find where the font is added: the WordPress Font Library, your theme (including theme.json), or a plugin/page builder. Remove or replace it at that source, then confirm the live page no longer requests files from Google. If you want to keep the same typeface, use WordPress’s Font Library to install the selected font locally instead of loading it from Google’s servers.

What “disable Google Fonts” can mean

These are different outcomes:

  • Remove the font: the design falls back to another configured font.
  • Stop remote requests: the same typeface remains available, but its files are served by your WordPress site.
  • Stop every Google Fonts request: all theme, plugin, builder and editor sources must be checked; changing one setting is not proof that every request is gone.

The correct procedure depends on your active theme, WordPress release, page builder and installed plugins.

1. Check the WordPress Font Library

On installations that provide the Font Library, go to Appearance > Fonts. In the Library tab, select an installed family and delete it to remove that Font Library entry. In a block theme, you can also open Appearance > Editor > Styles and change the site-wide typography or typography for supported blocks. WordPress documents these controls in The Font Library.

Deleting a family here only removes that managed Font Library family. A theme or plugin can still enqueue a separate stylesheet or font file, so continue with the checks below.

Keep the typeface but avoid Google’s servers

WordPress’s documented Font Library installation flow downloads selected Google Font files to your WordPress site for local hosting. The browser then obtains those installed files from your domain rather than from Google in that flow. You can also upload font files yourself, but you are responsible for having permission to use and distribute them.

2. Replace fonts in the theme

Block themes and global styles

Open the theme’s typography controls in the Site Editor and replace the remote family with a suitable system stack, such as a system sans-serif or serif stack. The exact labels and available controls vary by WordPress version and theme.

For a block theme, inspect theme.json as well. WordPress uses settings.typography.fontFamilies to register system fonts and bundled web fonts. The Typography documentation and Global Settings and Styles handbook describe how these settings are declared.

Remove the Google-hosted family from the theme configuration or replace it with a system family. A theme may also include font assets directly, so review its enqueued styles and assets using the guidance in Including Assets and Applying Styles.

Classic themes

Use the theme’s Customizer, theme options or documentation to find typography settings. If the theme hard-codes a Google Fonts stylesheet, a child-theme change or a theme update may be required; avoid editing the parent theme directly because updates can overwrite the change.

3. Check plugins and page builders

Page builders, optimization tools, form plugins and other extensions can add their own font requests. Look for settings named Typography, Google Fonts, Load fonts or External fonts, and disable the remote option or switch to a system/local family.

The Disable and Remove Google Fonts plugin attempts to remove requests from themes and plugins and includes a Font Audit. Its listing warns that some themes and plugins require additional steps, so treat the audit as a diagnostic lead rather than a universal switch. Check the originating theme or plugin when the audit identifies a source.

Choose the approach that fits your goal

Approach Typeface remains available? Where files are served Coverage Ongoing responsibility
Delete a family in Appearance > Fonts No for that Font Library family Not served by that library entry Font Library only; theme/plugin requests may remain Recheck after theme or plugin changes
Replace with a system font No, unless the system stack includes an equivalent Visitor’s device Theme settings you change; other sources can remain Check typography after redesigns
Install the Google font through the Font Library Yes Your WordPress site for that installation flow That Font Library installation, not unrelated enqueues Maintain files, caching and licensing
Use a removal plugin and audit Usually only if another local or system definition exists Depends on your replacement Attempts theme/plugin removal; exceptions are documented Re-audit after updates

4. Verify the live site

Do not rely only on an editor preview or an administration screen. After changing settings, purge relevant page, CDN and browser caches, then inspect a published page in your browser:

  1. Open the page in a private window or a browser session with a cleared cache.
  2. Open Developer Tools and select the Network panel.
  3. Reload the page and filter for font, .woff, .woff2, .ttf or stylesheet requests.
  4. Check the request URLs. A request to Google’s font domains indicates that some source still loads a remote font; a request to your own domain indicates local serving.
  5. If you use the removal plugin, run its Font Audit and follow the identified theme or plugin setting, then repeat the live-page check.

This procedure verifies the particular site, theme, plugins and browser you are using; it does not establish a result for every WordPress installation.

When Google Fonts still load

The Font Library entry was removed, but requests remain

Inspect the active theme’s typography and theme.json, then review page-builder and plugin settings. The remaining request is likely coming from a separate enqueue rather than the deleted library family.

The font appears only on certain pages

Check templates, reusable blocks, landing-page builder settings and plugin-generated forms on those pages. Compare the Network panel on an affected page with a page where the request is absent.

The editor still loads a font

Editor assets and front-end assets can be configured separately. Confirm whether the request occurs in the Site Editor or only on the public page, then adjust the corresponding theme or plugin setting.

A theme update restores the request

Review the updated theme’s typography configuration and asset enqueues. Keep custom changes in supported theme settings or a child theme rather than modifying parent-theme files.

Performance and privacy expectations

Removing a remote font request can change which third-party requests a page makes, but there is no universal speed gain or score improvement. The result depends on the font files, caching, page layout and visitor connection. Measure your own published pages after the change if performance is the reason for disabling Google Fonts.

Local hosting also does not eliminate the need to manage font licensing or the responsibility to serve the files correctly. The available documentation explains WordPress’s font controls and local installation flow; it does not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal or compliance outcome.
