To convert an image online, keep a copy of the original, choose a converter that accepts your source format and offers the format you need, upload or select the image, set any quality or size options, convert, then download and verify the result. The right output depends on what will use the image: JPG is often practical for photos and smaller files, PNG for graphics that need lossless storage or transparency, WebP for modern web delivery, and SVG for genuine vector artwork.
Choose the output format before you convert
Start with the destination: a website, app, print workflow, or editor may accept only certain formats. If it names a required format, use that rather than choosing solely by file size. If you have a choice, match the format to the image and the features you need.

Google for Developers describes WebP as a format with lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Its documentation reports lossless WebP images 26% smaller than PNG and lossy WebP images 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG at equivalent SSIM quality; these are Google’s published comparisons, not expected savings for every file. For AVIF and WebP, compatibility is a property of the receiving app, browser, or publishing workflow—not just the converter. Chrome for Developers’ format guidance, last updated in 2019, describes AVIF support as more limited than WebP and recommends JPEG or PNG fallbacks for older browser support. Because that guidance is dated, do not rely on it as a current version-by-version support chart; validate the actual destinations you need. Read the format guidance.

Convert an image online step by step
- Keep the original. Make a separate copy for conversion, especially when quality matters or you may need another output later.
- Check the destination requirements. Note its accepted formats, size or resolution limits, and whether transparency or animation must be retained.
- Choose a converter for the specific input and output. Adobe Express documents quick actions for JPG, PNG, and SVG conversion. CloudConvert lists a broader range, including PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, PSD, and multiple camera-raw formats. Available options can change, so check the service’s current page before uploading. Adobe Express image conversion · CloudConvert image converter.
- Select the source image and target format. If the converter provides quality, resolution, or output-size controls, adjust them for the destination. CloudConvert says its image converter offers those controls.
- Convert and download. Use the converter’s download action and keep the output under a distinct name so it does not overwrite your original.
- Verify the downloaded file. Open it in the intended app or upload it to the destination. Check appearance, dimensions, transparency, and animation when relevant; a successful conversion message alone does not establish that every property survived.
Example: HEIC to JPG
Choose a converter that accepts HEIC input and JPG output, select the HEIC image, choose JPG, and convert. Open the downloaded JPG in the app or website that needs it. JPG is a lossy format, so avoid repeatedly converting and resaving the output if image quality matters; retain the original HEIC for future conversions.
Example: PNG to WebP
Select WebP as the output and decide whether the image needs transparency or lossless encoding. If the converter exposes quality settings, use a setting suitable for your image and review the downloaded result at its intended display size. Test the resulting file in the target site or application, particularly if it is part of a workflow with varied browser support.

Example: raster image to SVG
First determine whether you need an actual vector. A normal format conversion can wrap or save image data without tracing its shapes. If you need an SVG logo that scales as vector artwork, use a converter with a real vectorization or tracing step, then inspect paths, colors, and detail. Photographs usually do not become faithful, editable vector artwork through a simple format change.
Check limits, quality, and preserved features
Online converters differ in accepted formats, upload limits, batch support, quality controls, and handling of transparency or animation. Check those details on the current service page before committing to a large or important conversion.

For a concrete example of product-specific limits, Adobe’s image requirements page, updated February 9, 2026, lists AI, GIF, HEIC, JPEG/JPG, PNG, PSD/PSDT, SVG, and WebP as accepted imports in Adobe Express. It states a desktop web import limit of 80 MB (SVG up to 250 KB), a mobile app import limit of 40 MB, and a maximum image resolution of 65 megapixels. Adobe also warns that complex SVG elements such as text, images, gradients, and masks may render incorrectly. These are Adobe Express editor import limits, not general limits for online converters. - Dimensions: Resizing changes pixel dimensions; changing format alone does not necessarily resize an image. Inspect the output dimensions if a destination has a specific requirement.
- Transparency: If transparency matters, choose a target format and conversion settings that support it, then inspect the downloaded file against a contrasting background.
- Animation: Check whether the source is animated and whether the converter and target format retain animation. Do not assume a still-image conversion will preserve it.
- Quality: Lossy conversion can discard information. Raising quality later or converting the result to a lossless format cannot restore detail already removed.
- Vector content: SVG compatibility can depend on the SVG’s features and the editor. A file accepted by an editor may still render differently if it uses complex elements.
Protect private images and avoid quality surprises
Uploading a file to an online converter means you should review that service’s current privacy, retention, and deletion terms before processing confidential or sensitive images. The service pages referenced here describe conversion workflows, but do not establish how long uploaded files are retained or whether they are deleted after a particular period. Do not assume a converter processes files only in your browser or removes them immediately unless its current technical and privacy documentation says so. For sensitive material, use an offline method whose processing and storage behavior you can verify.

Google’s WebP documentation also points to downloadable command-line tools such as cwebp for local conversion. That can be an option when you do not want to upload an image, but consult the tool’s current documentation for installation and exact usage rather than assuming an online converter’s options carry over.

Troubleshoot a conversion that did not work

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert an image without losing quality?
It depends on the source and the conversion. A lossless conversion can avoid additional lossy compression, but it cannot recover information already discarded by a lossy source such as a compressed JPEG. Keep the original and avoid repeated lossy saves.
Is converting online private?
That depends on the converter’s processing and retention practices. Review its current privacy and deletion terms before uploading sensitive images; the converter pages described above do not establish a universal retention period.
Does changing .jpg to .png convert the image?
No. An extension change does not alter the encoded image. Use a converter to create a file in the target format.
