You do not need a Windows-logo key to take a screenshot on a Windows PC. Open Start with your mouse, search for Snipping Tool, choose New, and select the part of the screen you want to capture. If your keyboard has a Print Screen key, you can also press it to copy the whole screen, or press Alt + Print Screen to copy just the active window.
Not having a Windows key and not having a Print Screen key are different problems. The first is easy to work around with Snipping Tool. If the second applies too, use the On-Screen Keyboard or Snipping Tool instead.
Use Snipping Tool without pressing any keyboard shortcut
This is the most direct option if your keyboard is missing its Windows key, the key is broken, or you simply want to use the mouse. Snipping Tool is built into Windows, and you can open it from Start or search without using the Windows-logo key.
- Open Start with the mouse. Click the Start button on the taskbar.
- Find the app. Type Snipping Tool in the Start search and launch the app.
- Start a capture. Choose New.
- Choose what to capture. Select a rectangular area, a free-form area, a window, or the full screen, depending on the options shown.
- Finish and review the image. The capture opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate it or save it.
The app is the best fit when you need a particular part of the screen rather than everything visible on the desktop. For example, select a region for a cropped instruction or choose a window when you want to exclude other open apps. A full-screen capture is useful when the whole display is relevant.

Choose the capture mode for the job
- Rectangular selection: Drag around a specific area when you want a clean crop.
- Free-form selection: Trace an irregular shape when a rectangle would include distracting content.
- Window: Capture a particular window rather than the whole desktop.
- Full screen: Capture everything on the display.
Mode names or the layout of controls can vary with the Windows version. If your Snipping Tool looks different, look for the capture-mode control near New and choose the closest matching option.
Clipboard or saved file?
A screenshot copied to the clipboard is not automatically a file in a folder. Snipping Tool lets you review the capture and save it from the app. If you only need to insert the image into a document or message, pasting may be enough; if you need to keep or attach it later, save the capture to a file and note where you saved it.
If your keyboard has Print Screen
Print Screen (PrtSc) is a fast way to copy the entire screen. Microsoft describes the key as placing a static image snapshot of the entire screen on the clipboard. Press PrtSc, open an image-capable app such as Paint, Word, or an email editor, and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Then save the image from that app if you need a separate file.

Use Alt + Print Screen when you want only the active window. First click the window you want so it is active, then press the two keys together and paste the result with Ctrl + V. This avoids including the rest of the desktop, which can be useful for instructions or a support ticket.

Print Screen is a clipboard action, not a guarantee that Windows has saved a file for you. If you press it and see no file appear, paste into an app first. Snipping Tool is usually the simpler choice when you want to select only part of the screen.
If the keyboard also has no Print Screen key
A missing Windows key does not prevent a screenshot. A missing PrtSc key only removes the Print Screen shortcut. You can still use Snipping Tool from Start, or use Windows’ On-Screen Keyboard to press PrtSc virtually.

- Open the On-Screen Keyboard using the mouse and the Windows controls available on your PC. You can search Start for On-Screen Keyboard if that is available.
- When its keyboard appears, click its PrtSc key.
- Open an app that accepts images and press Ctrl + V using your physical keyboard, or choose a paste command from the app’s menu.
The exact way to open the On-Screen Keyboard can vary by Windows version and device. If you cannot find it quickly, use Snipping Tool instead; it does not require a PrtSc key. Another option is to connect a USB keyboard that includes Print Screen, but buying one is not necessary just to take a screenshot.
On a Windows tablet, try the hardware buttons
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance says that Power + Volume Up captures the screen on most Windows tablets. This is device-dependent, so the combination may not work on every model. Try it on your tablet and check the result; if it does not produce a capture, use Snipping Tool or an available keyboard method instead. Button behavior should not be assumed from one tablet to another.
Pick the method that matches what you have
- No Windows key, but a mouse works: Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and use New.
- Need a quick image of everything: Press PrtSc and paste into an app.
- Need only the focused app: Focus that window, press Alt + PrtSc, and paste.
- No physical PrtSc key: Use Snipping Tool or click PrtSc in the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Using a Windows tablet: Test Power + Volume Up; switch to Snipping Tool if your model does not support it.
Think about both the scope and the destination before you capture. A full-screen clipboard image is quick, but it may include unrelated windows or information. A Snipping Tool selection takes a few more actions but gives you control over what appears in the image.

Troubleshooting screenshots that seem to disappear
You pressed Print Screen but cannot find a file
Print Screen copies an image to the clipboard; it does not necessarily save a file. Open Paint, Word, an email editor, or another app that accepts images, press Ctrl + V, and save the pasted image from that app if you need a file. If you want to review and save a capture directly, use Snipping Tool.
Alt + Print Screen captured the wrong thing
That shortcut targets the active window. Click the window you want first so it has focus, then press Alt + Print Screen again. If you want a manually selected portion rather than one complete window, use Snipping Tool’s region selection.
You do not know which key is Print Screen
Look for a key labeled PrtSc, Print Screen, or a similar abbreviation. Microsoft notes that it is usually near the upper-right of a keyboard, but compact keyboards and device layouts differ. If you cannot identify or use it, the On-Screen Keyboard or Snipping Tool avoids depending on the physical key.

Start search or the app looks different
Use the Start button with the mouse and search for Snipping Tool. The names and placement of controls can vary by Windows version, but the task is to launch the app, start a new capture, and choose the capture area or mode. If you cannot locate a particular mode, try another available mode or use Print Screen for a full-screen clipboard capture.
The tablet button combination does nothing
Power + Volume Up is supported on most Windows tablets according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance, not guaranteed on every device. Confirm the specific model’s behavior rather than repeatedly relying on the combination. Snipping Tool is the fallback when it is available.
