Usually, no. Instagram’s current protection is designed to block screenshots and screen recordings of photos and videos sent in Direct Messages as View Once or Allow Replay. Those disappearing items also cannot be opened on Instagram’s desktop website, according to Instagram safety reporting from October 2024. Do not assume that an old trick, a second phone or a capture app will produce a usable copy.
The answer changes when you are looking at an ordinary Story, feed post or Reel. Current explainers report that Instagram does not send the owner a screenshot notification for those surfaces. Vanish Mode is a separate conversation feature where a screenshot notice can appear.
First identify what you are capturing
“Disappearing photo” can describe several Instagram features with different rules. Check the label and the chat mode before taking any action.

These rules are about the message mode and Instagram surface, not whether you use an iPhone, Android phone or computer.

Can you screenshot a View Once or Allow Replay photo?
Instagram announced the relevant safety change on October 17, 2024. TechCrunch reported that the company was “no longer going to allow people to screenshot or screen record ephemeral images or videos sent in private messages.” In practical terms, the app may prevent the capture, return a blank or unusable result, or otherwise stop the disappearing media from being copied.
View Once is intended to be opened a single time. Allow Replay permits another viewing under the sender’s chosen rule, but it is still ephemeral DM media. Treat both as protected. A screenshot that appears to succeed is not proof that the image was captured correctly or that the behavior will be the same after an app update.
What happens if you press the screenshot buttons?
Depending on Instagram’s current build and device, the capture can be blocked or produce no useful image. Screen recording is covered by the same protection. Instagram’s behavior can change, so a result seen on one account, phone or app version should not be generalized.
Can you open the photo on a computer instead?
The October 2024 reporting says these ephemeral items cannot be opened on Instagram’s desktop experience. Moving from the mobile app to a browser is therefore not a reliable way to view or save a View Once image.

- Vanish Mode: A September 2026 explainer reports that a screenshot notice can appear in the chat.
- Stories, feed posts and Reels: Current explainers report no screenshot notification for ordinary content.
Older articles that say every disappearing photo triggers an alert may describe an earlier implementation or may be referring to Vanish Mode. Product behavior changed when Instagram introduced capture blocking for ephemeral DM media, so check the mode and your installed app version before relying on advice written before October 2024.
Screenshot versus screen recording
For View Once and Allow Replay, assume both methods are restricted. A recording is not a safe alternative to a still screenshot. The October 2024 safety announcement explicitly covered both screenshots and screen recordings.
For a Story, post or Reel, the researched current explainers report no alert for either ordinary screenshot use or ordinary recording. That does not make copying private material appropriate, and it does not hide your account from normal Story viewer lists.

Mobile app
The disappearing-media controls are implemented in Instagram’s mobile messaging experience. If a photo is labeled View Once or Allow Replay, expect the app to enforce the capture restriction. Keep Instagram updated so you are seeing the behavior supported by your current release rather than an outdated tutorial.
Desktop browser
Desktop is not a workaround for protected media: the October 2024 reporting says ephemeral items cannot be opened there. Desktop can still display ordinary Instagram surfaces, such as public posts, Stories and Reels, subject to the account’s privacy settings.

What not to rely on
- Old “screenshot notification” guides: They may predate the October 2024 change or confuse View Once with Vanish Mode.
- Another phone or camera: This does not change Instagram’s in-app enforcement and can violate the sender’s privacy.
- Third-party capture utilities: No reliable bypass is established here. Installing an app that asks for Instagram credentials can also expose your account.
- Browser extensions or modified clients: They can stop working after an update and may breach Instagram’s rules or compromise private data.
If you need to keep information from an ephemeral message, ask the sender to share it in a form they are comfortable making permanent. Respect the sender’s choice when they use View Once or Allow Replay.
How to check the mode before capturing
- Open the Instagram mobile app and go to the relevant Direct Message.
- Look at the media card or message description. Identify whether it says View Once, Allow Replay, or is part of Vanish Mode.
- If it is View Once or Allow Replay, assume screenshots and recordings are blocked and do not attempt to bypass the control.
- If it is a Story, post or Reel, remember that current explainers report no dedicated screenshot alert, while Story viewing itself remains visible through Instagram’s normal viewer information.
- Check Instagram’s app-store update history if your behavior differs from a guide published before October 2024.
Troubleshooting common surprises
“My screenshot saved a black or blank image”
That is consistent with capture protection. Do not keep trying to defeat it; ask the sender for a normal share if you need a retained copy.
“The sender says they were notified”
Confirm whether the chat was in Vanish Mode. Screenshot notices are associated with that separate mode in current reporting. Also confirm that the content was not a View Once item handled by an older app version.
“I can screenshot a Story but cannot screenshot a DM photo”
Those are different surfaces. Ordinary Stories are reported not to notify the owner, while View Once and Allow Replay DMs are protected ephemeral media.
“The photo is missing on Instagram.com”
That is expected for the protected ephemeral items described in the October 2024 reporting. Use the mobile conversation rather than treating desktop absence as a capture bug.

Privacy and permission
A technical ability to capture an image is not permission to redistribute it. View Once and Allow Replay communicate that the sender expects limited persistence. Avoid forwarding, reposting or using another device to preserve the media without consent. For ordinary Stories, posts and Reels, the absence of a screenshot alert does not remove copyright, confidentiality or privacy obligations.

Do not rely on airplane mode. Instagram’s current protection is designed to prevent screenshots and recordings, and no reliable offline workaround is established.

Will Instagram tell someone I viewed their Story?
The creator can see normal Story viewer information. That is separate from a screenshot notification.
Are View Once photos available in Instagram Direct on desktop?
The October 2024 safety reporting says ephemeral View Once and Allow Replay items cannot be opened on the desktop experience.
Why do different websites give opposite answers?
