First, determine whether the problem is local or a YouTube incident
Do not begin by repeatedly clearing data. A 60-second comparison usually identifies the fault.
- Refresh the page or feed. Then open a video whose page you know works.
- Compare locations. Check Home, Subscriptions, a channel page, and search results. Note whether one item is missing or every card is blank.
- Compare clients. Try another browser, a private/incognito window, or another phone, computer, or TV.
- Compare networks. Switch Wi-Fi to mobile data or mobile data to Wi-Fi and reload.

Check for a current YouTube outage
TeamYouTube’s September 27, 2026 known-issue report specifically described Android and iOS users seeing “blank or black gaps, or grayed-out boxes instead of video thumbnails, posts, and Shorts,” with navigation bars and app icons continuing to load. Some users reported that updating the YouTube app temporarily restored images. Because incident status changes, verify whether the report is still active before changing several local settings.

If every feed is affected on several devices and networks, wait for YouTube to resolve the service-side problem while using the update and alternate-network checks below. If only your browser or one device is affected, continue with local troubleshooting instead of assuming an outage.
Fix blank thumbnails on Android
Update YouTube
Open Google Play, search for YouTube, and tap Update if it is offered. Relaunch the app and refresh Home. This is especially important during the mobile-feed incident described above.
Clear the YouTube cache
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (the wording can vary by Android manufacturer).
- Select YouTube.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage, unless you are prepared to sign in again and reset local app data.
- Open YouTube and replay the affected feed.
Clearing a cache removes temporary files; it does not repair a YouTube-side incident. If the problem returns immediately, test another network before clearing data again.
Restart the app and phone
Close YouTube from the recent-apps view, open it again, and restart the phone if the images remain absent. Reinstalling is a later step because it removes local app state and takes longer than the reversible checks.

Update and relaunch
Open the App Store, check for a YouTube update, install it, then force-close and reopen YouTube. The September 27 incident included iOS feeds, so an update is the first check when the whole feed is affected.

Test the network and app state
Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, reload, and restart the device. If thumbnails work on one network but not the other, the connection or its filtering path is more likely than the app itself.
Reinstall only after the reversible checks
If updating, switching networks, and restarting do not help, delete and reinstall YouTube from the App Store. Reinstallation signs you out and resets local state, so keep it as the final iOS step rather than the first response to a temporary incident.
Fix blank thumbnails in a desktop browser
Use a private window as the quickest isolation test
Open YouTube in an incognito or private window. This normally starts with a separate cookie state and extensions disabled or limited. If thumbnails appear there, the regular profile—not YouTube’s image service—is the likely cause.

In the normal window, disable ad blockers, privacy filters, script blockers, custom themes, and security extensions, then reload. Re-enable them individually to find the one blocking image requests. Mozilla’s Firefox support guidance also points to troubleshooting mode, extensions and themes, hardware acceleration, and profile state when thumbnails stop loading after an update.
Clear YouTube site data and cache
Use your browser’s privacy settings to remove YouTube site data or cached files, restart the browser, and sign in again if required. YouTube’s official support guidance says to update the browser or clear the browser’s cache and cookies for loading problems. Clearing all browsing data is usually unnecessary; target YouTube first when your browser permits it.

Update the browser
Install the current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or the browser you use. YouTube notes that outdated browsers can fail with newer features. After updating, restart the browser rather than only opening a new tab.
Check hardware acceleration and profile state when Firefox alone fails
If a Firefox update preceded the failure, open Firefox Troubleshoot Mode. If thumbnails return, an extension, theme, hardware-acceleration setting, or damaged profile state is implicated. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause without losing a working configuration.

Switch connections
Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data or from mobile data to Wi-Fi and refresh. YouTube’s official troubleshooting guide recommends changing the internet connection for loading problems. If the issue follows one Wi-Fi network, restart the router and test again; if it follows every network, return to device and account checks.
Review DNS and filtering software
Custom DNS services, parental-control systems, antivirus web shields, and network-wide ad blockers can alter or block image requests. Temporarily use the network’s default DNS or pause the filter, then reload. Restore the protection after the test and add only the required exception if you identify it as the cause.
Confirm the account state
Sign in if you are signed out and confirm that YouTube loads normally on the account. If a private window works but your signed-in profile does not, stale cookies or an account-specific extension policy is more likely than a service outage. Sign out and back in only after recording any playlists or settings you need to preserve.

What to do on smart TVs and other living-room devices
TV interfaces expose fewer diagnostic controls, so use the scope test first. Open another video, switch to another app and back, and test the same YouTube account on a phone. Update YouTube and the TV’s system software, force-close or restart the app, and reboot the TV and router. If the phone works on the same Wi-Fi while the TV does not, the TV app or firmware is the likely branch; reinstall YouTube from the TV’s app store if that option is available. If both devices fail only on that Wi-Fi, investigate the router or DNS path.
When a creator thumbnail or API request is the problem
A viewer feed filled with gray placeholders is different from an error while setting a specific creator thumbnail through the YouTube Data API. Google documents 403 forbidden when the caller lacks permission and 404 notFound when the video cannot be found. Those API responses require checking authorization, the video ID, and the request response; they do not explain a normal viewer feed in which many unrelated cards are blank.
Recovery order that avoids unnecessary resets
- Refresh and open a known working video.
- Compare another feed, device, browser, and network to establish scope.
- Check for the current TeamYouTube incident, especially when all mobile cards are affected.
- Update YouTube and your browser.
- Use a private window and disable extensions or ad blockers.
- Switch networks, restart the router when the fault is network-specific, and review custom DNS or filtering.
- Clear the Android app cache or YouTube browser site data.
- Restart the app and device.
- Reinstall the app only when the preceding checks fail.
Stop when a step restores thumbnails. Keeping a known cause is more useful than repeatedly deleting data and recreating the same configuration.
