A webpage captures video by asking the browser for permission to share a tab, window, or screen with navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia(). The browser—not the webpage—shows the source picker and requires the user to choose and approve what to share. The page receives a MediaStream, which it can preview, record with MediaRecorder, or send live using WebRTC.

What happens when a webpage captures video?

  1. A user starts capture. The page calls getDisplayMedia(), usually from a button click. The call requires a secure context in supporting browsers and transient user activation, so it cannot simply run in the background.
  2. The browser asks what to share. Its own picker lets the user choose an available tab, window, or screen and grant permission. Page-supplied options can influence capture, but cannot bypass the picker or silently select a source. The user must approve each capture request.
  3. The page receives a stream. If permission is granted, the promise resolves to a MediaStream with a video track for the selected display surface. The page can attach it to a video element for a preview.
  4. The page chooses what to do with it. It can display the stream, record it, or transmit it. These steps and the permission boundary are described in MDN’s getDisplayMedia() documentation and its Screen Capture API overview.

How to capture and record a screen in a webpage

This minimal example starts capture from a button, previews the selected source, records it, and offers the resulting file for download. Save it as an HTML file and serve it from a secure context, such as localhost during development or an HTTPS site. Browser support varies; the example checks for the required APIs and a WebM recording format before starting.

Runnable example

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Screen capture demo</title>
<button id="start">Choose a screen or tab</button>
<button id="stop" disabled>Stop recording</button>
<p id="status">Not recording</p>
<video id="preview" autoplay muted playsinline controls></video>
<p><a id="download" hidden>Download recording</a></p>
<script>
const start = document.querySelector('#start');
const stop = document.querySelector('#stop');
const status = document.querySelector('#status');
const preview = document.querySelector('#preview');
const download = document.querySelector('#download');
let stream;
let recorder;
let chunks = [];

start.addEventListener('click', async () => {
  if (!navigator.mediaDevices?.getDisplayMedia) {
    status.textContent = 'Display capture is not available in this browser or context.';
    return;
  }
  if (!window.MediaRecorder) {
    status.textContent = 'MediaRecorder is not available in this browser.';
    return;
  }

  const mimeType = ['video/webm;codecs=vp9', 'video/webm;codecs=vp8', 'video/webm']
    .find(type => MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported(type));
  if (!mimeType) {
    status.textContent = 'No supported WebM recording format was found.';
    return;
  }

  try {
    // This call must follow a user action; the browser displays its own picker.
    stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({ video: true, audio: false });
    preview.srcObject = stream;
    chunks = [];
    recorder = new MediaRecorder(stream, { mimeType });
    recorder.addEventListener('dataavailable', event => {
      if (event.data.size > 0) chunks.push(event.data);
    });
    recorder.addEventListener('stop', () => {
      const blob = new Blob(chunks, { type: recorder.mimeType });
      download.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
      download.download = 'screen-recording.webm';
      download.hidden = false;
      status.textContent = 'Recording saved locally as a downloadable file.';
    }, { once: true });
    recorder.start();
    start.disabled = true;
    stop.disabled = false;
    status.textContent = 'Recording. Use Stop recording or the browser sharing control to finish.';

    // The user can stop sharing from the browser's own sharing indicator.
    stream.getVideoTracks()[0].addEventListener('ended', () => {
      if (recorder.state !== 'inactive') recorder.stop();
      finish();
    }, { once: true });
  } catch (error) {
    status.textContent = `${error.name}: ${error.message}`;
  }
});

stop.addEventListener('click', () => {
  if (recorder && recorder.state !== 'inactive') recorder.stop();
  finish();
});

function finish() {
  stream?.getTracks().forEach(track => track.stop());
  preview.srcObject = null;
  start.disabled = false;
  stop.disabled = true;
}
</script>
</html>

The example collects the recorder’s data chunks and creates a Blob when recording stops. The resulting download stays in the browser unless your code explicitly uploads it elsewhere. For a production interface, revoke an old object URL when replacing a recording, and provide clear state and stop controls. See web.dev’s screen-recording guide for the recording flow and MDN’s MediaRecorder reference for the recorder API.

Preview, save, or share live

Goal Approach What to account for
Show the selected surface inside the page Assign the stream to a video element’s srcObject. The stream remains active until stopped by the page, user, or source ending.
Create a recording Pass the stream to MediaRecorder; collect its data events and handle its stop event. Supported containers and codecs depend on the browser. Check format support rather than assuming a particular MIME type works.
Share live with another participant Add the stream’s tracks to a WebRTC peer connection. This is live transmission, not the same as saving a local recording; the application must implement its connection and signaling flow.

The browser documentation establishes these as different uses of the same capture stream; it does not establish one as universally better or faster. Choose according to whether the user needs a local preview, a saved file, or a live session.

Can webpage capture include audio?

It can request audio, but a successful request does not guarantee that audio will be present. A browser may offer audio from a shared window, computer audio, or the microphone depending on the browser and selected source. Audio support varies by browser and capture path, so test the exact target combinations rather than promising that system or microphone sound will always be recorded. The getDisplayMedia() options and behavior and MediaRecorder support are browser-dependent.

If the application needs narration, microphone capture is a distinct input path; do not treat it as an automatic part of screen capture. Explain what audio choices the browser offers and let the user decide.

Permissions, privacy, and browser requirements

Permission and embedding

getDisplayMedia() is limited availability, requires transient user activation, and requires a secure context in browsers that support it. A browsing context’s Permissions Policy can also block capture. An embedded page may need the display-capture policy permission, but that does not remove the browser’s user prompt or source selection. Consult MDN’s guide to using the Screen Capture API when working with embedded pages.

Protect what appears on screen

A user can share more than the page intended: a selected screen or window might show messages, account details, password managers, or other private material. The browser’s picker and sharing indicator help make capture visible, but cannot decide whether the contents of the chosen surface are appropriate. Tell users to choose only the intended tab, window, or screen and to close or hide sensitive material first.

Stop cleanly

Capture can end when the user stops it in the browser, the page stops the tracks, or the selected source ends. Listen for the video track’s ended event, stop an active recorder, and update the interface. The recording must handle the recorder’s stop event to finalize collected data. Keep a visible stop control available throughout capture.

Troubleshooting common capture failures

  • The API is missing: The browser may not support display capture, or the page may not be in a secure context. Feature-detect navigator.mediaDevices?.getDisplayMedia, test on the browsers you target, and provide an explanation or an alternative workflow when unavailable.
  • The browser says user activation is required: Call the method directly from a user gesture such as a click. Do not defer the request until an unrelated asynchronous task or attempt it automatically on page load.
  • The user dismissed or denied the picker: Treat this as a normal outcome, keep the page usable, and let the user try again from a clear action. A site cannot silently reuse a persistent grant.
  • An embedded page cannot start capture: Check the embedding page’s Permissions Policy for display-capture. Even with policy permission, the browser still requires the user to choose and approve a source.
  • There is no audio in the recording: The selected surface or browser may not offer the requested audio source. Test system audio, shared-window audio, and microphone paths separately in each target browser; requesting audio alone does not guarantee a track.
  • The recorder throws an unsupported-format error: Check MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported() and select only a format the current browser reports. Formats and codecs are not uniform across browsers.
  • The recording is empty or incomplete: Ensure you collect non-empty dataavailable chunks and create the file after recording stops. Also handle a stream ending because the user stopped sharing, not just the page’s own Stop button.
  • Capture cannot read a selected source: The browser or operating system may be unable to access it, or the source may no longer be available. Catch promise rejections, explain the error in plain language, and offer a fresh attempt.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Display capture runs through browser APIs; there is no universal quality or performance ranking among preview, recording, and WebRTC transmission. Actual behavior depends on the browser, selected source, recording format, and the application’s handling of the stream. Test the browsers and audio paths your users rely on, and avoid assuming that a format or capture option available in one browser works in another.

If you need a still screenshot of a webpage rather than a video of a user-selected screen, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a substitute for permission-based display capture: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF capture of a URL. It can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
