Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe simplest no-WooCommerce setup is Square’s own Payment Links buy button: create a recurring payment link in Square Dashboard, copy the generated embed code, and paste it into a WordPress page or post. If you need an on-site form and subscription controls, use a Square-connected plugin such as WP Easy Pay, but its directory listing marks recurring billing and subscription management as Pro features.
Choose the right setup before you start
There are two documented ways to accept recurring Square payments from a WordPress site without installing WooCommerce. Your choice depends on whether Square or WordPress should manage the customer-facing payment experience.
| Route | Where you configure payments | Best for | Important limitation | Cost considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square Payment Links buy button | Square Dashboard; the button is embedded in WordPress | A simple subscription, service, membership contribution or recurring donation | It is a checkout entry point, not a full store catalog or WooCommerce-style subscription administration system | Square processing fees; no WordPress payment-plugin plan is required |
| WP Easy Pay | A WordPress form plugin connected to Square | Forms, recurring-payment controls and subscription reporting inside WordPress | The WordPress.org listing labels recurring payments and subscription management as Pro features; current plan details must be checked | Square processing fees plus any applicable paid plugin plan |
Do not select WPSmartPay merely because its name sounds similar. Its WordPress.org listing identifies Stripe and Paddle as the subscription gateways, not Square. WooCommerce Square is also outside this guide’s scope because it requires WooCommerce.
Requirements and checks
- A Square account that is eligible to take payments in your country or region.
- Access to Square Dashboard and permission to create Payment Links or configure an integration.
- A WordPress page or post where you can add custom HTML or a suitable block.
- For WP Easy Pay, a WordPress installation and PHP version that meet the plugin’s current requirements, plus a compatible Square account. Check the live WP Easy Pay listing for its requirements, changelog, support information and plan terms.
- A test plan for the complete checkout, confirmation and recurring-billing flow before accepting live payments.
Method 1: Embed a recurring Square Payment Links button
Square documents embeddable buy buttons for websites including WordPress. The button sends the visitor to Square checkout, while the recurring schedule is configured in Square.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
1. Open Square’s website-button workflow
- Sign in to Square Dashboard.
- Choose Add button to website. Square’s current instructions are on its Payment Links buy-button page.
2. Select what the link should collect
Choose whether the link collects a payment, sells an item or accepts donations. For a recurring service or membership, select the option that matches what the customer is buying. Square describes Payment Links as supporting products, services, subscriptions and donations.
3. Enter the offer and recurring schedule
- Enter a title that will make sense at checkout.
- Set the amount.
- Adjust the payment Frequency for the recurrence you want. Square’s wording for this control is “Adjust the Frequency of the payment.” Available frequencies can vary by account, market or payment type, so use the choices shown in your Dashboard rather than assuming a particular interval is available.
You can optionally add an image and change advanced settings before styling the button.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
4. Style the button and copy its code
Use Square’s button styling controls, then copy the generated embed code. Keep the code unchanged unless you understand the HTML and script dependencies it contains.
5. Add the code in WordPress
- In WordPress, edit the target page or post.
- Add a Custom HTML block at the location where the button should appear.
- Paste Square’s embed code into that block.
- Save or publish, then open the public page in a private browser window to confirm the button is visible.
Some security, caching or page-builder configurations can strip scripts or alter markup. If the button is missing, compare the saved block with Square’s original code, temporarily test in a standard Custom HTML block, and check whether a security or optimization plugin is blocking the required script.
Rank #3
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
6. Verify the customer journey
Click the button as a customer would and confirm that Square checkout displays the correct title, amount and recurring terms. Check the confirmation message or receipt, and confirm in Square Dashboard that the resulting subscription or recurring payment is recorded. Test cancellation and failed-payment handling according to the controls available in your Square account before launch.
Method 2: Use WP Easy Pay for WordPress forms
WP Easy Pay is listed on WordPress.org as a Square payment and donation form plugin. Its listing describes recurring payments and subscription management as PRO features, including managing subscriptions and reviewing a subscription report. Do not assume those capabilities are included in the free download.
Rank #4
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
What this route changes
- The payment form is created and placed from WordPress rather than using only a Square-generated button.
- Recurring-payment and subscription controls are exposed through the plugin’s paid feature set, subject to the current plan and compatibility.
- The listing describes adding forms with a Gutenberg shortcode block and integrations with Elementor and Beaver Builder.
General setup sequence
- Install the plugin from WordPress.org or your normal WordPress plugin workflow.
- Review the plugin’s current documentation and connect it to the appropriate Square account.
- Create a payment form and enable the recurring or subscription option only if your active plan provides it.
- Insert the form using the documented Gutenberg shortcode block, Elementor integration or Beaver Builder integration.
- Use the plugin’s sandbox capability, where available, to run a complete test before switching to live payments.
- Confirm that subscriptions, customer notifications and the subscription report appear as expected in the plugin and Square account.
Because plugin requirements, paid-plan contents, supported payment methods and Square compatibility can change, verify those details in the live listing and vendor documentation rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Square’s reviewed U.S. buy-button page displays a standard rate of 3.3% + 30¢ per transaction for new Square customers and 6% + 30¢ per transaction for Afterpay transactions. Those are page-specific displayed rates, not universal prices: your country, account, payment method, customer checkout method and future Square pricing may produce different charges. Confirm the current rate in your Square account and on the applicable regional pricing page before publishing prices.

- With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
- Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
- Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
- A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
The displayed rates should not be confused with a WordPress plugin fee. The native button route does not require a paid WordPress payment plugin; WP Easy Pay may add a Pro-plan cost on top of Square’s processing charges.
Testing and launch checklist
- Use a test or sandbox mode when the selected integration provides one.
- Check the amount, currency, title and recurrence wording at checkout.
- Verify that a successful payment creates the expected recurring record in Square.
- Confirm that the customer receives the expected receipt or confirmation.
- Test the page on mobile and desktop, including a private browsing session.
- Check that caching, security and consent tools do not block the embedded button or form.
- Document how customers cancel or manage their subscription and test that process.
- Before going live, recheck Square account eligibility, regional availability, current fees and any plugin license or compatibility requirements.
Which route should you use?
Choose Square’s buy button when simplicity matters
Use the native Payment Links workflow when you have one or a few recurring offers and are comfortable managing the billing relationship in Square. It avoids WooCommerce and keeps the WordPress work to placing an embed.
Choose WP Easy Pay when you need WordPress-side forms
Use WP Easy Pay when a form-builder workflow, Gutenberg or page-builder placement, subscription management and reporting inside WordPress justify configuring a plugin and checking its Pro requirements.
Neither route is a replacement for a complete WooCommerce catalog and subscription stack. The buy button is intentionally lightweight, while the plugin route depends on the current capabilities of a third-party integration.
