The image in your WordPress site’s browser tab is its Site Icon, commonly called a favicon. Remove the Site Icon assignment in your dashboard, then save or publish the change. The route depends on your WordPress version and whether your site uses a block theme.
Choose the removal steps for your WordPress setup
Start with the route that matches the controls available in your dashboard. WordPress 6.5 moved the Site Icon setting to General Settings; block themes also provide an Identity section in the Site Editor. Older versions use the Customizer.
WordPress 6.5 or later: Settings > General
- In the dashboard, open Settings > General (sometimes labeled General Settings).
- Find the Site Icon control and clear the selected icon using the control shown on that screen. WordPress’s instructions confirm the setting’s location but do not specify a removal-control label.
- Save the change.
WordPress documents the move to General Settings in its Create a Favicon guide.
Block theme: Appearance > Editor > Identity
- Open Appearance > Editor.
- Open Identity, hover over the Site Icon, and click the X.
- Save the changes.
The Identity section is available when an active block theme provides the Site Editor. WordPress documents the hover-and-remove control in its Site Editor Identity guide; its Site Editor documentation explains block-theme availability.

WordPress 4.3–6.4: Appearance > Customize > Site Identity
- Open Appearance > Customize > Site Identity.
- In the Site Icon section, select Remove.
- Click Publish.
This is the documented legacy route. The Customizer appears only when the active theme supports it; WordPress explains that dependency in its Customizer documentation. The removal steps are also shown in Learn WordPress’s Site Editor lesson.
Site Icon and Site Logo are different settings
The Site Icon controls the small image used in the browser tab and other site-identification contexts. The Site Logo is an image displayed on the page through the Site Logo block. They are separate settings, although a Site Logo block can be configured to use its image as the Site Icon. If the tab image remains after you remove the icon, check whether the logo is also assigned as the Site Icon. See WordPress’s Site Logo block documentation.

Removing the Site Icon clears its assignment; it does not require deleting the image from the Media Library. The documented removal steps do not direct you to delete that media file.

After saving or publishing, refresh the site and check the browser tab. The WordPress instructions establish how to change the setting, but do not specify a guaranteed browser-cache interval. A previously loaded icon may therefore remain visible temporarily; the documented action is to refresh and verify, not to wait for a particular length of time.
