Choose the right kind of screenshot
“A screenshot of a website” can mean two different things. A screen capture records pixels currently displayed on your Windows desktop; a full-page capture aims to include the webpage below the part visible in Chrome’s window. Pick the method based on what the recipient needs, not just on which shortcut is easiest.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10 and describe capturing all or part of the screen, then editing, saving, or sharing the result. A screen selection does not scroll the webpage and join the unseen sections into a tall image. If that is your requirement, use the full-size DevTools method below instead.
Capture the visible part of a website with Snipping Tool
- Open the page in Chrome. Navigate to the area you want to show. If you need a particular section, scroll it into view and position it before starting the capture.
- Open the capture overlay. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft lists this keyboard shortcut for opening the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose a capture mode. Select rectangular snip for a box-shaped area, freeform snip for an irregular outline, window snip for a window, or full-screen snip for the current display. These are among the modes documented by Microsoft.
- Make the capture. For a region, drag around the content you want. For a window, select the Chrome window. For a full-screen capture, use the full-screen option. The screenshot represents what was on screen at that moment.
- Edit, save, or copy it. Open the capture in Snipping Tool to edit it. Microsoft documents Ctrl+S to save and Ctrl+C to copy. Save the image if you need a file to attach or upload; copy it when you want to paste it directly into another application.
Which Snipping Tool mode should you use?
- Rectangular: best for a neat crop around a headline, chart, or page section.
- Freeform: useful when the desired visible area does not fit a rectangle.
- Window: captures the selected window rather than only a small page region.
- Full screen: captures the display as it currently appears. It is not a substitute for capturing content farther down a long page.
Microsoft also lists PrtSc as a way to take a static full-screen snapshot copied to the clipboard. Keyboard behavior can vary, especially on laptops; Microsoft’s cited instructions do not establish a universal Fn-key combination. If PrtSc does not behave as expected on your keyboard, use Windows logo key + Shift + S instead.

Capture an entire webpage with Chrome DevTools
A March 6, 2025 answer in Google Chrome Community describes using DevTools’ Capture full size screenshot command for a full-page image. This is community guidance, not official Chrome product documentation, and the community page cautions that its content may not be verified or current. Treat the command name as version-dependent rather than guaranteed.
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome. Confirm that it is the correct page before opening the developer tools.
- Open DevTools. Press Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Open the DevTools command menu. Press Ctrl+Shift+P.
- Find the capture command. Search for Capture full size screenshot.
- Run the command. If it is available, select it to capture the full page rather than only the current viewport.
- Check the result. Open the generated image and confirm that it contains the sections you needed. If the command is missing or named differently, consult the troubleshooting steps below; the cited community procedure does not confirm identical labels across Chrome versions.
The key difference is scope: DevTools is the method to try for a single full-document image, while Snipping Tool records a screen, window, or selected region. The DevTools steps take longer and have a less authoritative source in the available guidance, so verify the result instead of assuming a successful command captured everything you intended.

Make the capture useful
For a readable screen snip
- Bring the relevant content into view before pressing the shortcut; Snipping Tool captures the displayed screen rather than the hidden part of a page.
- Use a rectangular selection when you want to exclude browser chrome or unrelated desktop content.
- Review the capture before sharing. Snipping Tool supports editing, so you can make an adjustment before saving or copying.
- Choose save or copy based on the next step: saving creates a file you can attach or upload; copying places the capture on the clipboard for pasting.
For a full-page image
- Use the full-size command rather than a full-screen snip when you need content beyond the viewport.
- Check the output for the page sections that matter. The community guidance gives the command sequence but does not specify behavior for every page or Chrome version.
- If the exact command is absent, do not assume that a screen capture includes content below the fold. Use Snipping Tool for a visible area, or consider a purpose-built screenshot service if you need a repeatable developer workflow.
Troubleshooting
Windows logo key + Shift + S does not open the overlay
Check that you are pressing the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together. If the shortcut is inconvenient or does not work as expected, open Snipping Tool from Windows and use its capture controls. The cited Microsoft instructions document the keyboard shortcut and Snipping Tool capture modes; laptop-specific Fn combinations are not established there.
The capture contains only the top or visible part of the webpage
That is expected for a screen snip: it captures what is on screen, not the entire document. Scroll to and capture individual sections if separate images are acceptable. If you need one image containing below-the-fold content, try the DevTools full-size screenshot workflow.

“Capture full size screenshot” does not appear
The workflow comes from a Chrome Community answer dated March 6, 2025, not official Chrome documentation, and exact command labels may change. Reopen the command menu with Ctrl+Shift+P and search for the phrase again. If it still does not appear, your Chrome interface may differ from the community-described steps; use Snipping Tool for visible content rather than treating a normal screen capture as full-page.
The image is not where you expected
For a Snipping Tool capture, use its save action and choose a location when you need a named image file. If you copied instead, paste the clipboard contents into the destination application. For a DevTools capture, check the browser’s download interface and the configured download location; the community workflow does not specify a filename or save-path guarantee.

PrtSc does not work the way you expect
Microsoft documents PrtSc as copying a static full-screen snapshot to the clipboard, but keyboard layouts differ and the support instructions do not specify every laptop’s Fn behavior. Try Windows logo key + Shift + S, then save or copy from Snipping Tool.
