How to Change a JPEG File Extension to JPG on Windows and Mac

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change a JPEG filename extension to JPG, rename the file from .jpeg to .jpg. This works when the file already contains JPEG image data. Renaming changes only the filename suffix; it does not convert the image, recompress it, or alter its pixels. If the file is actually PNG, HEIC, or another format, export or save it as JPEG in an image application instead.

What the change actually does

.jpg and .jpeg are both filename extensions used for JPEG images. Microsoft lists both as Joint Photographic Experts Group photo extensions, and Apple documents both for JPEG (JFIF) files. See Microsoft’s extension guide and Apple’s JPEG file-type documentation.

The extension helps Windows or macOS associate a filename with an application. Changing photo.jpeg to photo.jpg changes that association and the visible name, but leaves the underlying JPEG bytes untouched. Microsoft Support puts it plainly: “You can change a file name extension, but that won’t convert the file to another format or change anything else about it except the file name.”

Goal Correct action What happens to image data
Use the shorter suffix required by an upload form or workflow Rename .jpeg to .jpg Nothing changes; the existing JPEG data remains intact
Turn PNG, HEIC, or another format into a JPEG Open it in an image editor or converter and export/save as JPEG A new JPEG is encoded, usually with format and quality choices

Before renaming: verify that it is already a JPEG

Renaming is appropriate only when the file’s actual format is JPEG. A filename can be misleading if someone previously gave a non-JPEG image a .jpeg suffix, or if a download was mislabeled. If an application reports an invalid JPEG marker or refuses to open the renamed file, restore the original extension and convert the image properly. Adobe recommends opening a problematic image in an image application and saving it as JPEG when the filename extension does not match its format; its troubleshooting guidance is available at Adobe’s Invalid JPEG Marker article.

  • USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
  • Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
  • Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
  • Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
  • Open the image before renaming if possible. If a normal photo viewer displays it, that is useful evidence that the file is a valid image, although the viewer alone does not prove the encoding.
  • Check where the file came from. A camera, phone, or JPEG export normally produces a real JPEG; a file downloaded from an unfamiliar source deserves more verification.
  • Keep a backup or avoid deleting the original until the renamed copy opens and uploads correctly.

Change .jpeg to .jpg in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Show the complete filename

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to the folder containing the image.
  2. Select View on the toolbar.
  3. Choose Show, then enable File name extensions. Microsoft documents this path in Common file name extensions in Windows.

You should now see the entire name, such as holiday-photo.jpeg, rather than only holiday-photo. Showing extensions prevents the common mistake of adding another suffix while the existing one remains hidden.

Rename the suffix

  1. Select the file and press F2, or right-click it and choose Rename.
  2. Change only the final .jpeg to .jpg. For example, change holiday-photo.jpeg to holiday-photo.jpg.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. If Windows warns that changing the extension might make the file unusable, choose to proceed only after confirming that the file is already JPEG. This warning concerns the filename association; it is not a conversion step.

Check the result

Open the renamed image. Confirm that your photo viewer or editor recognizes it and that the receiving website accepts the upload. If it fails, rename it back to .jpeg. If it still fails, the suffix was probably not the real problem; use an image application’s export or Save As command to create a genuine JPEG.

Change .jpeg to .jpg in macOS

Show extensions for every Finder item

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Choose Finder > Settings.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Enable Show all filename extensions.

Apple describes these controls in Show or hide filename extensions on Mac. Finder will display the complete name, including .jpeg.

Rename one image through Get Info

  1. Select the image in Finder.
  2. Choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I.
  3. Expand Name & Extension.
  4. Edit only the ending .jpeg to .jpg, leaving the rest of the name unchanged.
  5. Close the Info window and open the file to verify it.

macOS may ask whether you want to keep the old extension or use the new one. Choose the new extension only when the file is actually JPEG. Apple cautions that changing an extension can make a file harder to open with the application that created it, so do not use renaming as a substitute for conversion.

Rename versus convert: choose the right operation

Rename when the data is already JPEG

Use the steps above when a service specifically requests .jpg, a script expects that suffix, or you want consistent naming. The image’s encoding, dimensions, metadata, and quality are not changed by the rename itself.

Convert when the image is another format

If the source is PNG, HEIC, TIFF, WebP, or another format, open it in an image editor and choose an option such as Export, Save As, or Convert, then select JPEG. Choose the desired quality and color settings, save a new file, and retain the original until you have checked the result. Merely calling a PNG file picture.jpg leaves PNG data under a misleading name and can cause upload or opening errors.

Common problems and fixes

The extension is not visible

Windows may be hiding extensions until View > Show > File name extensions is enabled. On macOS, enable Finder > Settings > Advanced > Show all filename extensions, or use Get Info > Name & Extension for one file.

The file became photo.jpg.jpeg

This usually means the original extension was hidden and a new suffix was typed after the base name. Turn on visible extensions, then rename the complete filename to exactly one suffix, such as photo.jpg.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image will not open after renaming

Restore the original suffix and test the file. If it still will not open, the content may not be JPEG or may be damaged. Open it in an image application and export a new JPEG. Adobe’s guidance on invalid JPEG markers explains why a mismatched extension can produce opening errors: Adobe Help.

An upload form still rejects the file

Check the site’s actual requirements. It may impose a file-size limit, pixel dimensions, color-profile rules, or a MIME-type check rather than merely checking the suffix. Re-export a valid JPEG at the required dimensions and size, and do not assume that renaming can satisfy a format or encoding requirement.

The operating system asks for administrator permission

The folder may be protected or owned by another account. Copy the image to a folder where you have write access, rename the copy, and then move it to the destination if appropriate. Do not change system-file extensions.

Safe workflow for batches of images

  1. Make a backup or work on copies.
  2. Display filename extensions before selecting files.
  3. Confirm that every selected file is already JPEG; do not batch-rename mixed PNG, HEIC, and JPEG folders.
  4. Rename only the suffix, preserving each base filename.
  5. Open a sample from the renamed set and test the exact upload or application that prompted the change.

For a mixed-format folder, conversion software is the correct tool. Batch renaming can standardize names, but it cannot standardize image formats.

Key takeaways

  • Both .jpeg and .jpg identify JPEG image files.
  • Renaming changes only the filename suffix.
  • Use Windows Explorer or macOS Finder to rename an existing JPEG safely.
  • Use an image editor’s export or Save As function when the underlying format must change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing .jpeg to .jpg reduce image quality?

No. Renaming the suffix does not rewrite or recompress the image data. Quality can change only if you open the image and save or export a newly encoded file.
