How do I add breadcrumbs in WooCommerce?
Breadcrumbs are a linked path—often starting at Home—that helps shoppers see where a product or category sits in your store. Before installing or enabling anything, open a product page and a category or shop archive. If a useful trail is already there, you may not need to add one.
Choose one implementation for the location where the trail should appear. Two breadcrumb systems can produce duplicate trails, and plugin settings may replace or conflict with the WooCommerce output.

Add breadcrumbs with Yoast SEO
- In WordPress, open Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Breadcrumbs, enable breadcrumbs, and save.
- Choose where the trail should appear. Yoast documents a theme integration for site-level placement, the
Home »shortcode, and a Yoast Breadcrumbs block for individual content. - If you use Yoast WooCommerce SEO and want Yoast’s trail to replace WooCommerce’s, enable its Replace WooCommerce Breadcrumbs setting when Yoast breadcrumbs are enabled.
The exact placement depends on your theme. A shortcode or block can suit a specific content area; theme integration is more site-wide and may require help from the theme developer. Add breadcrumbs with Rank Math
- Enable Breadcrumbs in Rank Math’s settings and save the configuration.
- Place the trail using the
rank_math_the_breadcrumbs()template function, the[rank_math_breadcrumb]shortcode, or a shortcode block in a block-theme template. - If Rank Math is meant to own the output, disable or remove the competing default WooCommerce breadcrumb output as needed.
Use a shortcode or block when it gives you the placement you need; use the template function for theme-level placement if you are comfortable working with templates. A theme may need adjustment to position the function correctly. See Rank Math’s breadcrumb setup guide for its implementation options.
Customize or remove WooCommerce’s native breadcrumbs
WooCommerce documents PHP filters for changing details such as the Home label, separator, wrapper/defaults, and Home URL, as well as removing its breadcrumbs. Its examples include woocommerce_breadcrumb_defaults and woocommerce_breadcrumb_home_url. This route is for code-level customization, not a visual setting beginners should expect to find in every theme.

Put custom code in a child theme’s functions.php file or use a code-snippet plugin. WooCommerce warns: “Please don’t add custom code directly to your parent theme’s functions.php file as this will be wiped entirely when you update the theme.” Its documentation describes this as developer-level work and says customizations are outside its support policy. If you are unsure how to adapt a hook or template safely, ask a WordPress developer; WooCommerce points readers to Codeable for developer help.
Review WooCommerce’s breadcrumb customization documentation before using a filter or removing the default output. Hooks and theme behavior can differ, so do not paste code without understanding its effect on your setup.
Style breadcrumbs in a block-theme product template
When editing a product-page template in a block theme, WooCommerce documents editor controls for breadcrumb text and link colors and typography. Open the relevant product-page template in the site editor, select the breadcrumb block, and adjust the available style controls. - Confirm that there is only one trail in each location.
- Follow the links to make sure they lead to the expected home, category, and product destinations.
