In Microsoft Edge, Ctrl+Shift+S opens Screenshot where available; choose Capture full page. Chrome’s documented full-page route is different: open DevTools, turn on Device Mode, then select More options > Capture a full size screenshot.
A full-page browser capture includes content below the fold. A normal operating-system screenshot usually records only what is visible on the screen. The steps below explain how to choose the right kind of capture, save or copy it, and handle cases where the shortcut or result is not what you expected.
Choose the capture you need
Before taking a screenshot, decide whether you need the current screen, a selected part of the page, or the complete webpage. These are different capture jobs, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a result appears to be missing content.
- Visible-area capture: records the part of the webpage currently shown in the browser window. Use it for a menu, error message, or section already on screen.
- Selected-area capture: lets you mark a region yourself. Use it when you need only part of the visible page and want to exclude browser chrome or nearby content.
- Full-page capture: creates one image of the webpage, including content below the fold. Use this when the reader needs the page from top to bottom rather than just the viewport.
A browser’s built-in screenshot feature captures webpage content; it is not the same as pressing the operating system’s screenshot key. An operating-system capture generally represents the currently visible display and does not automatically scroll the webpage to collect the rest. For a page-length result, use the browser’s full-page command.

Firefox: use the direct screenshot shortcut
Firefox desktop has a direct shortcut and separate choices for the whole page or the visible part. Press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. You can also right-click the webpage and choose Take Screenshot.
- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Press the shortcut for your operating system, or right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page to include content below the fold, or Save visible for the current viewport.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard, depending on what you need next.
Firefox can also identify a page element as you move over it, so you can capture an element without drawing a region manually. For a custom selection, use the screenshot interface’s selection controls. Mozilla Support documents keyboard controls for moving and resizing a selection, which can help when a mouse or trackpad is inconvenient. It also notes that crosshair movement does not work on Wayland; if that affects your selection, use the other available controls or a different capture route.
When Firefox’s developer controls are more useful
For a delayed capture, a single CSS-selected element, or other developer-oriented options, Firefox DevTools provides a separate route. In DevTools Settings, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons to expose a screenshot button. The Web Console also has a :screenshot helper. Its documented options include full-page capture with --fullpage, a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, clipboard output, and targeting an element with a CSS selector.

Use the regular screenshot interface for a quick save or copy. Choose the DevTools route when you need to control timing, target a particular element, or set output-related options. The helper’s exact syntax for options beyond --fullpage is best checked in the Firefox version you use rather than guessed from another browser’s command-line conventions.

In Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Screenshot, or open it from the webpage’s right-click menu or Edge Settings. Choose Capture full page for the whole page, including content that would otherwise require scrolling, or select an area for a partial capture.
- Open the page in Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S. If the shortcut is unavailable, open Screenshot from the right-click menu or Settings instead.
- Choose Capture full page or select the area you want.
- Use the overlay to mark up the result if needed, then copy or save it.
Edge’s screenshot feature supports markup with a pen or touch as well as copying and saving. Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. If you do not see the feature or the shortcut does not open it, use the available menu entry if present; do not assume every Edge installation exposes the same route.

Chrome: capture the full page through DevTools
Chrome’s documented full-page method is a DevTools menu workflow, not a dedicated global screenshot shortcut. Open DevTools, turn on its Device Mode toolbar, and open More options. Select Capture a full size screenshot to include page content outside the viewport. Choose the neighboring Capture screenshot command for the visible viewport only.
- Open the webpage in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on the Device Mode toolbar.
- Open the toolbar’s More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page, or Capture screenshot for the currently visible area.
If the captured image stops at the bottom of the visible window, check that you chose Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation was last updated on 2024-02-20, so labels or menu placement may differ in later versions; follow the equivalent capture commands shown by your installed browser rather than relying on an undocumented keyboard combination.

At a glance: which browser route fits?
| Browser | How to open the capture tool | Full-page and partial capture | Save, copy, or edit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox desktop | Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux; Command+Shift+S on macOS; also available from the page context menu | Separate Save full page and Save visible choices; region and element capture are also available | Download as an image or copy to clipboard |
| Microsoft Edge | Ctrl+Shift+S, page context menu, or Settings; availability varies | Capture full page or select an area | Mark up, copy, or save |
| Google Chrome | DevTools Device Mode > More options | Capture a full size screenshot for the full page; Capture screenshot for the viewport | Use the capture command appropriate to the desired scope |
The browser determines which built-in controls are available, so there is no single screenshot shortcut that works the same way in all three. Firefox and Edge offer direct ways into their capture features; Chrome’s documented full-page path goes through DevTools. For keyboard accessibility in Firefox’s selection interface, use its documented arrow-key controls rather than assuming crosshair movement will work on every display system.

Save, copy, and check the result
Choose the output action that matches your next step. Saving creates a file you can attach, archive, or share. Copying sends the capture to the clipboard for pasting into another application. Firefox documents both actions; Edge also offers copy and save after capture. The interfaces may differ, so check the screenshot overlay for the relevant control instead of expecting identical button names in every browser.
- For a report or message: copy the image if you are going to paste it immediately, or save it first if you need a file attachment.
- For a whole-page record: inspect the top and bottom of the result and confirm that the page continues beyond the initial viewport in the captured image.
- For a precise component: use Firefox’s element capture or its DevTools selector option when the regular full-page image would include too much surrounding content.
A full-page screenshot is still an image of the page state at capture time. If the page has not finished loading, the image may not show content that appears later. For ordinary use, wait for the page to reach the state you want before opening the capture tool; for a controlled delay or selector-targeted shot in Firefox, use the developer method described above.

The shortcut does nothing
First check the browser and operating system. The documented Firefox shortcut differs between Windows/Linux and macOS, and Edge’s documented shortcut is for its Screenshot feature. In Edge, availability can vary; try the page context menu or Settings. Chrome’s official full-page workflow is opened from DevTools Device Mode, so pressing a shortcut intended for another browser is not the documented Chrome route.

The screenshot is only the visible screen
Use the full-page choice explicitly. In Firefox, choose Save full page rather than Save visible. In Edge, choose Capture full page. In Chrome, select Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. A standard operating-system screenshot also does not substitute for the browser’s full-page capture.
The result is missing content that appears after waiting
The capture reflects the state of the webpage when the browser takes it. Let the page finish rendering and any content you need appear before capturing. If the capture must happen after a deliberate pause, Firefox’s DevTools screenshot helper supports a delay; it also supports selecting an element when the target is a particular part of the page.
The capture selection is difficult to control
Firefox’s screenshot interface documents arrow-key movement and resizing controls for keyboard users. On Wayland, Mozilla notes that crosshair movement does not work, so use the documented keyboard controls where applicable or switch to a capture choice that does not require moving the crosshair.
The menu labels do not match
Browser interfaces change. Microsoft says Edge Screenshot availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and version; Chrome’s cited Device Mode documentation has a last-updated date of 2024-02-20. Look for the equivalent full-page versus visible-area choice in the installed browser, and avoid relying on a shortcut not documented for that browser.
