You can add email-based magic-link login to a WordPress site with a plugin: install and activate one, configure how login works, place its form on a page, and test that its emails arrive and lead to the right account. A developer-led identity service is another option, but it requires application integration rather than a simple WordPress plugin install.
Choose a WordPress magic-link plugin
Two WordPress.org listings describe plugins for email magic-link authentication: Magic Login by HandyPlugins and Magic Link by KaizenCoders. Neither is a universal best choice; compare the features you need with the current listing and plugin settings before installing.
- Decide whether users should still be able to log in with a username and password, or whether you want to require magic links.
- Check support for your site’s setup, such as WooCommerce or membership integrations, a custom login page, domain restrictions, activity records, or other controls.
- Check which capabilities are included in the free version and which require Pro. The listings describe some advanced controls as Pro features.
Install and configure the plugin
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for the selected plugin by its name, then choose Install and Activate. The listings document this dashboard route; labels may change, so follow the plugin’s current listing if the screen differs.
- Open the plugin’s settings and decide whether magic links supplement or replace password login. KaizenCoders says ordinary login remains available unless forced magic-link login is enabled. Do not assume that setting or behavior applies to HandyPlugins’ plugin.
- Set the link lifetime and any available abuse controls. HandyPlugins says its Magic Login links expire after five minutes by default and that its Token Lifespan setting changes the time to live. Its listing says setting the value to zero disables automatic expiration. Confirm the current setting and available protections in your chosen plugin before relying on them.
Put the login form on the right page
Use the shortcode or block documented for the plugin you installed. The two shortcode names below are product-specific, not interchangeable.
- HandyPlugins Magic Login: the listing documents the
[magic_login_form]shortcode or a block. - KaizenCoders Magic Link: the listing documents the
[magic-link]shortcode for a custom login page.
Add the matching form to the page where visitors should request a login email, then view that page as a visitor to check that the form appears and works as expected.

Test email delivery and the full login flow
- Use a test account to request a magic link from the page where you placed the form.
- Confirm that the email arrives and that its link opens the intended site and account. Check that the signed-in account has the expected permissions.
- If the message does not arrive, review the site’s email configuration. HandyPlugins says Magic Login uses WordPress mail functions and recommends SMTP for better delivery. SMTP can address problems in the site’s mail path, but does not guarantee inbox placement.
- Keep a support route available for users who cannot access their email, since email access is required to complete this login flow.
Protect the flow without overclaiming security
A usable magic link acts as a bearer credential: anyone who can use the link may be able to sign in as its recipient. Treat the inbox and link as sensitive, keep the expiry limited to a period that suits the site, and verify where the link sends users. Consider request throttling, brute-force protection, IP checks, or domain restrictions where the selected plugin offers them. HandyPlugins lists several of these controls among Pro features; check the current plugin listing and settings for exact availability.
These options do not establish that a plugin makes a site categorically secure, or that magic links are always safer than passwords. The cited plugin listings document product features, not an independent comparative security assessment.

When a managed identity service makes sense
For a custom application or a developer-led integration, Auth0 documents an embedded passwordless flow: an app collects an email address or phone number and calls /passwordless/start. For an email magic link, the user follows the link back to the application callback URL without a separate /oauth/token call. Auth0’s cited documentation states a limit of 50 requests per hour per IP for /passwordless/start. This route requires application integration and is not a drop-in replacement for installing a WordPress plugin. See Auth0’s embedded passwordless login documentation.
