Most iPhone screenshot problems come down to using the wrong button combination, holding the buttons instead of pressing and releasing them together, or looking in the wrong place afterward. For an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume up at the same time. On a Home-button iPhone, use the side button and Home button together; on some older models, use the top button and Home button. If a button is difficult to use, try AssistiveTouch, Back Tap, or Siri instead.
Use the button combination for your iPhone
The right combination depends on whether your iPhone has a Home button and where its lock button is. Press both buttons at the same time, then release them quickly. Avoid holding them down: a long press may bring up another control instead of taking the screenshot.

Make sure you are pressing the lock button and the correct volume button together—not volume down. If you press one first and hold it while pressing the other, the phone may interpret the action as a button hold rather than a screenshot command. Try again with a quick, simultaneous press and release.
Take a screenshot without pressing the buttons
If a button is unreliable, hard to reach, or uncomfortable to press, iPhone includes software alternatives. These are useful for accessibility as well as troubleshooting; no purchase or repair accessory is needed just to try them.

Set up AssistiveTouch
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and turn on AssistiveTouch.
- In the AssistiveTouch settings, assign Screenshot to a menu item or action that suits you. Apple documents Screenshot as an AssistiveTouch action.
- Use the AssistiveTouch control and choose the assigned action to capture the screen.
The exact configuration controls shown within AssistiveTouch can vary with iOS. If you do not see the setting immediately, stay in the AssistiveTouch screen and check its menu and custom-action options.
Set up Back Tap
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
- Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Select Screenshot from the available actions.
After setup, tap the back of the phone using the gesture you selected. Back Tap is documented for iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or later; availability and menu labels may differ on other devices or software versions.
Use Siri
Ask Siri to take a screenshot. This avoids the button combination and does not require you to configure AssistiveTouch or Back Tap first. If your immediate goal is to capture a specific app screen, bring that screen into view before giving the command.

Check whether the screenshot was saved
A screenshot normally saves automatically to the Photos library. To find it, open Photos > Collections, scroll to Media Types, and tap Screenshots. Check this album rather than relying only on the brief preview: seeing a preview is not proof that the file is present in the library.

Confirm that the image is not simply being overlooked in the general photo grid, where it may be mixed in with other items. Apple’s menu labels can change in later iOS releases, so if the exact path differs on your phone, look in Photos for the Screenshots media type.
Capture a whole webpage or other long content
A normal screenshot captures what is visible on the screen. For supported long content, such as a webpage in Safari, iPhone may offer a Full Page option after you take the screenshot.

- Open the webpage in Safari and take a normal screenshot using the button combination or an accessibility alternative.
- Open the screenshot preview and choose Full Page if that option is offered.
- Review the extended capture, then use the available save or export control to keep it as an image or PDF.
Full Page is not a way to join together screenshots from any arbitrary app. The option appears for supported content, and the available export controls depend on the capture. If Full Page is not offered, use the normal screenshot for the visible screen or the app’s own export or print options if it provides them.
Understand screenshot preview and format settings
The preview may look different from what you remember without the screenshot failing. Current iOS Screen Capture settings include a full-screen-preview switch. When full-screen previews are enabled, the preview takes up more of the display; turning that switch off restores a temporary thumbnail-style preview.

Depending on iOS version and device support, this area can include preview style, CarPlay Screenshots, Automatic Visual Look Up, and SDR or HDR choices. Apple describes SDR screenshots as PNG and HDR screenshots as HEIF in its current guide. A changed format or preview style may affect what you see or how the file is stored, but it is distinct from whether the button press triggered a capture.

Some controls are available only on supported models or languages, and Apple may rename or move settings in later iOS releases. If a path differs, use Settings search for “Screen Capture” or the relevant option name.

A screenshot is one still image; a screen recording is a video of activity over time. They have different controls and restrictions. Apple warns that some apps might not allow their content to be recorded, and that screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. That is a screen-recording limitation; it does not establish that every such app blocks still screenshots.
Before assuming an app has blocked capture, identify what is failing: a still screenshot, a video recording, or a Full Page capture. If the still screenshot works elsewhere but not in one app, the available evidence does not justify treating a recording restriction as proof that the app blocks screenshots. Follow the app’s own rules for its content and try the appropriate capture type.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still will not work
- No response to the button press: Confirm the button pair for your model, then press and release both together quickly. If a button is difficult to operate, try AssistiveTouch, Back Tap, or Siri.
- A different control appears: You may be holding one or both buttons too long. Release them and retry with a brief simultaneous press.
- You saw a preview but cannot find the image: Open Photos and check Collections > Media Types > Screenshots to verify whether it is in the library.
- The preview is full-screen rather than a small thumbnail: Check Settings > General > Screen Capture and adjust the Full-Screen Previews switch.
- You need more than the visible screen: Take the screenshot in Safari and look for Full Page in the preview. That option is for supported long content, not every app.
- You are trying to save a video: Treat it as screen recording, not a still screenshot. Some apps restrict recording, and recording cannot run while screen mirroring.
- A setting is missing or renamed: Menu labels may vary by iOS release. Search Settings for the feature name, and check whether your iPhone and software version support it.
Apple’s documented fixes for an unreliable button are built-in software controls. A case, screen protector, or generic replacement part is not the first troubleshooting step for a screenshot command that can be triggered through AssistiveTouch, Back Tap, or Siri.
