How to Capture One of Two Screens on Windows or Mac

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a selection-based capture, not a full-desktop shortcut. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S, choose Rectangle, and drag around the monitor you want. On macOS, press Shift + Command + 4 and drag across one display. These methods capture only the rectangle you select, so the second monitor stays out of the image.

Choose the capture scope first

Two-monitor desktops are usually treated as one large desktop by full-screen commands. That is why a shortcut intended to capture “the screen” can produce an image containing both displays. Decide what you actually need:

  • One complete monitor: select a rectangle that follows that display’s four edges.
  • One application: use a window capture so other windows and the second monitor are excluded.
  • Both monitors intentionally: use a full-screen capture.

Also choose where the result should go. Windows Snipping Tool can copy, edit, save, or share the image. macOS normally saves a file to the desktop, while adding Control to the shortcut copies the result to the Clipboard.

Capture one monitor in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Fast rectangular capture

  1. Move the pointer onto the monitor you want to capture. This makes it easier to begin at the correct display edge.
  2. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool image-capture overlay appears.
  3. Select Rectangle.
  4. Drag from one outside corner of the target monitor to the opposite outside corner. Keep the selection inside the monitor’s edges and do not cross the seam between displays.
  5. Release the mouse button. Click the Snipping Tool notification or open the editor to annotate, copy, save, or share the image.

Windows supports freeform, rectangular, window, full-screen, and video snips. For an isolated monitor, Rectangle is the dependable choice because you define the exact boundaries yourself.

Capture only an application window

If the real goal is one program on one monitor, press Windows + Shift + S, choose Window, and click the application. This avoids capturing the monitor background, taskbar, or another window. It is also less sensitive to monitor alignment and scaling differences.

Keep a menu open with a delay

Menus and tooltips often disappear as soon as you invoke a capture shortcut. In Snipping Tool, use the delay feature before selecting the area. Microsoft documents delays from 1 to 5 seconds; start the delay, open the menu, then draw the rectangle around the target display or window.

Why Print Screen is usually wrong here

Microsoft documents Print Screen as a full-screen image copied to the Clipboard. With two displays configured as one desktop, that scope can include both monitors. Use the rectangular or window snip instead when the second screen must be excluded.

Capture one monitor on macOS

Selected-area shortcut

  1. Press Shift + Command + 4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
  2. Move the crosshair to a corner of the display you want.
  3. Drag to the opposite corner, following that monitor’s edges.
  4. Release to capture the selection. Click the thumbnail to edit, or wait for the file to save.

macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. Hold Control while using the shortcut to copy the capture to the Clipboard instead of creating the normal file.

Use the Screenshot app for more controls

Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. It offers full-screen, window, and selected-area controls, plus a timer and save-location options. Choose the selected-area control when you want exactly one monitor, then drag around that display.

Capture one application window

Press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space. The pointer becomes a camera. Click the application window on the desired monitor. To exclude the window’s shadow, hold Option while clicking. This captures the window rather than the entire monitor.

When full-screen shortcuts are appropriate

Shift + Command + 3 captures the entire screen. On a two-display setup, that is not the isolated-monitor workflow. Use it only when you deliberately want both displays in one image.

Windows and macOS methods compared

Need Windows 10/11 macOS
One monitor Windows + Shift + S → Rectangle Shift + Command + 4 → drag the display area
One application Windows + Shift + S → Window Shift + Command + 4 → Space → click the window
Full desktop Print Screen or a full-screen snip Shift + Command + 3
Timer or delay Snipping Tool delay, 1–5 seconds Screenshot app timer via Shift + Command + 5
Default destination Snipping Tool notification/editor; copy or save Desktop; Control copies to Clipboard

A rectangle is the safest option when monitor arrangement, scaling, or unequal resolutions make display boundaries difficult for an automatic full-screen command. A window capture is faster when only one app matters.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Make the selection accurate

  • Start on the target display: if the pointer is on the wrong monitor, cancel and restart there.
  • Use the seam as a checkpoint: begin just inside one edge and finish just inside the opposite edge so a strip of the other monitor is not included.
  • Account for taskbars and menu bars: include them only if they are part of what you need to document.
  • Check the result at 100%: tiny slivers of the neighboring display are easier to spot before sharing.
  • Use a window capture for repeatability: it avoids manually reproducing a rectangle when documenting the same application repeatedly.

Troubleshooting two-monitor captures

The image contains both monitors

You used a full-screen scope, or the drag crossed the display seam. Repeat with Windows Rectangle or macOS Selected Area. Start and finish the drag inside the target monitor’s corners.

The wrong monitor was captured

Cancel the overlay, move the pointer onto the intended display, and invoke the shortcut again. On macOS, move the crosshair before pressing the mouse button.

A menu or tooltip vanished

Use Snipping Tool’s 1–5 second delay on Windows or the Screenshot app’s timer on macOS. Open the menu during the countdown, then select the required area.

The image is black or blank

Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple specifically notes that certain apps, including Apple TV, may not allow window screenshots. Try capturing a selected area instead of a window; if the application still blocks capture, use an export or sharing function provided by that application.

The saved file is not where expected

On macOS, check the desktop unless you changed the Screenshot app’s save location. If you held Control, look in the Clipboard rather than for a new file. On Windows, click the Snipping Tool notification to open the editor, then explicitly save or copy the image.

Edges look misaligned on mixed-resolution displays

Do not rely on the combined desktop’s total width. Drag visually from the physical top-left to bottom-right of the single monitor. For a cleaner result, capture the application window instead of the display background.

When a desktop shortcut is not the right tool

Built-in capture is ideal for a person at a keyboard. It is less suitable when you need repeatable screenshots of webpages, scheduled captures, API integration, PDFs, or captures generated by an AI workflow. A desktop shortcut can only capture what is currently rendered on your local displays; it does not provide a server-side URL, structured options, or a reliable way to process many pages.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a webpage from a URL, not a physical monitor, so use it when your “one screen” is really one web page or one automated browser result. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and every response reports the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Options relevant to repeatable captures

  • Full-page capture loads lazy images; you can also capture one element by CSS selector.
  • Choose PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges for PDFs.
  • Set a device preset or any viewport, retina scale, dark mode, transparent background, and image resizing.
  • Run custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element, hide selectors, or wait for a selector, delay, or network idle.
  • Block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; provide custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation.
  • Use a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
  • Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture one monitor with Print Screen?

Print Screen is documented as a full-screen Clipboard capture, so it can include both displays. Use Windows + Shift + S with Rectangle when only one monitor is required.

How do I copy a Mac screenshot without saving a file?

Hold Control while using the macOS capture shortcut. The image is copied to the Clipboard instead of being saved in the normal location.
