If SharePoint shows a generic file icon instead of an image thumbnail, first identify the surface involved: a classic Picture Library, a modern document library, a modern page, or a video item. Each uses a different preview workflow. In a classic SharePoint Online Picture Library, an image larger than 50 megapixels has a documented thumbnail defect; reduce it below that threshold or switch to the modern SharePoint Online Document Library view. The file can still open by selecting its name.
Start with the SharePoint surface
Thumbnail troubleshooting is faster when you know where the preview is missing.
- Classic Picture Library: uses dedicated All Pictures, Thumbnails and Slides views.
- Modern document library: uses modern view configuration and file-preview rendering.
- Modern page: has separate page-image and page-thumbnail properties used in search, news and highlighted content.
- Video item: has its own thumbnail controls under Video settings.
Test the same file in the library, by opening its file name, and—if applicable—on the page or search result where the thumbnail is missing. A preview problem does not automatically mean that the file is damaged or inaccessible.
Fix a classic Picture Library thumbnail defect
Check the image dimensions
Microsoft documents a defect in classic SharePoint Online Picture Libraries when an image exceeds 50 megapixels. Calculate width multiplied by height; for example, a 10,000 × 6,000 image is 60 megapixels and exceeds the documented threshold.
#1 Best Overall
- Download or open the original image in an editor that displays pixel dimensions.
- Multiply the width by the height.
- If the result is 50 megapixels or more, resize or export the image so it is below 50 megapixels.
- Upload the reduced copy, or replace the existing file while preserving the library metadata if your governance process requires it.
- Refresh the library and select the file name to confirm that the image opens.
Microsoft’s stated workaround is to reduce the image to less than 50 megapixels or use the new SharePoint Online Document Library view. If the file opens when you click its name but its thumbnail remains blank, that behavior is consistent with this documented issue.
Use the modern document-library view
When resizing is undesirable—for example, when the original must remain at full resolution—switch the library to the modern document-library experience or copy the files into a modern document library and test the thumbnail there. Keep the original files available if other workflows depend on their dimensions or embedded metadata.
Correct the selected library view
Classic Picture Library views
Classic Picture Libraries expose All Pictures, Thumbnails and Slides views. If you are in a list-style view, the files may appear as rows or generic icons even though previews are available.
- Open the picture library.
- Open the library’s view selector.
- Choose Thumbnails for a grid of previews, or All Pictures or Slides when those layouts better suit the task.
- Wait for the view to reload, then test a known JPG or PNG.
Modern document libraries
In a modern library, select a view configured to display file thumbnails or preview cards. If every image suddenly shows a generic icon, compare the current view with another existing view before changing files. A view change can explain an all-files symptom without any upload or permission problem.

Check format and preview limits
Test with a common image format
Preview support depends on the SharePoint edition and experience. Microsoft’s supported preview formats include JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG, TIFF/TIF, BMP and PSD, among others, with the exact list varying by edition. If only certain extensions fail, convert one copy to JPG or PNG and upload it as a diagnostic.
Rank #2
- If the converted file previews, investigate format support or the source file’s encoding.
- If the converted file also fails, return to view, dimensions, permissions and service-specific troubleshooting.
- Do not delete the original until any retention, legal-hold or metadata requirements are satisfied.
Consider the 100 MB OneDrive guidance carefully
Microsoft’s OneDrive.com guidance says thumbnails or image previews are available below 100 MB, approximately 12,000 × 8,000 pixels. This is a related preview diagnostic, not a universal SharePoint limit. SharePoint Online, OneDrive and SharePoint Server editions can differ, so confirm which service and experience your tenant uses before treating 100 MB as a SharePoint rule.
Repair thumbnails on modern SharePoint pages
A page thumbnail is not the same object as a library file preview. Page thumbnails can appear in search, highlighted content and news, and a page may show the image correctly while those surfaces remain blank.
- Open the page and choose Edit.
- Select the page image or page-thumbnail control in the page details or image properties, depending on the page layout.
- Choose a supported image and save or republish the page.
- Use a 16:9 source where appropriate, as Microsoft recommends that ratio for page-thumbnail images.
- Allow search or news surfaces time to refresh, then test the result from the affected location.
Changing a library view will not repair a page whose page-thumbnail property is empty or points to an unsuitable image.
Set a video thumbnail separately
For a video item, open the video in the library, choose Video settings, and use the Thumbnail controls to upload or change the poster image. This is a separate workflow from image-file previews. If the video plays but has an unwanted or missing poster, change the thumbnail there rather than replacing the library view.
Decision tree for common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| One very large image has no thumbnail, but opens by file name | Classic Picture Library and dimensions | Reduce below 50 megapixels or use the modern document-library view. |
| Only certain extensions lack previews | Format support | Compare with the applicable Microsoft-supported list; test a JPG or PNG copy. |
| Every file shows a generic icon | Library view or classic/modern experience | Switch to Thumbnails or a modern view that supports previews. |
| Library preview works, but search or news does not | Page thumbnail property | Edit the page image or thumbnail and republish; use a suitable 16:9 source. |
| Video has no desired poster image | Video controls | Open Video settings and upload or change the thumbnail. |
Troubleshooting when the basic fixes fail
Clear the experience before changing files
Open the item in a private browser window or another supported browser and test the same URL. If the preview works there, stale cached data, an extension or a session-specific issue may be involved. Do not infer that a browser test changes the server-side thumbnail state.
Rank #3
Separate access from rendering
Confirm that the user can open the file by selecting its name. If the file cannot open, resolve permissions, sharing links or retention restrictions first; thumbnail work cannot compensate for denied access.
Compare one known-good file
Upload a small JPG or PNG to the same library and view. A known-good comparison distinguishes a library-wide view problem from a file-specific size, format or encoding problem.

Resizing or converting creates a new binary. Check versioning, required columns, content approval, retention labels and links before replacing a production file. If the thumbnail is the only problem, retain the original and document the diagnostic copy.
Escalate with useful evidence
For tenant support, record the library type (classic or modern), file extension, pixel dimensions, file size, view name, whether the file opens by name, browser, and whether a small JPG reproduces the issue. This prevents a generic “thumbnail broken” report from losing the details needed to identify the applicable limit.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a clean image of a SharePoint page or library for documentation, testing or an automated report, ScreenshotNeo provides a single screenshot request instead of maintaining browser automation. It accepts the page before capture, removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots: bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed. Its response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. The following calls target a placeholder SharePoint URL; replace it with a page your access key can reach.

Can I recover a thumbnail without changing the original image?
Yes. In the documented classic-library defect, the image can still open by selecting its file name. You can keep the original and use a reduced derivative or the modern document-library view for previewing.
Why does a page thumbnail differ from the image in its document library?
Pages store and publish their own thumbnail property for search, news and highlighted content. A library preview fix does not populate that page property.

Does a successful JPG test prove every format is supported?
No. It only shows that the library and view can render that test file. Support varies by SharePoint edition and experience, so evaluate each required extension against the applicable Microsoft list.
