Click Publish to apply the date. WordPress’s Classic Editor guide explicitly describes setting a past publish date to backdate a post.
Change the date on an already published post
You can change an existing post’s date from Posts using Quick Edit, without opening the full post editor. WordPress documents this capability in its Posts screen documentation. For a fully documented sequence of individual controls, use the Classic Editor steps above.

Check which date WordPress is using
-
On the Posts screen, the Date column shows the published date for published posts. For posts in other states, it shows the last modified date.
-
Open the public post page to see how the date appears to readers. If the site uses a Post Date block in a template or Query Loop, WordPress says that block displays the publication date; a theme may use a different presentation. See the Post Date block documentation.

Why the site timezone matters
WordPress distinguishes the post’s date, which uses the site’s timezone, from date_gmt, which uses GMT. Both fields are documented for creating and updating posts in the REST API post reference. When editing in the dashboard, choose the intended local date and time; do not assume a universal offset between the displayed time and GMT.
What changing the date does not establish
The WordPress documentation cited here explains how to change a post date and how certain screens or blocks display it. It does not establish a particular effect on search rankings, a guaranteed permalink change, or that the edit history will be hidden. Check your own site wherever the public date or URL matters rather than assuming those outcomes.
