Windows has more than one built-in way to record your screen. On Windows 11, use Snipping Tool to record a selected rectangular area; use Xbox Game Bar to record a game or app and control microphone or system-audio capture. For editing a Snipping Tool clip, you can open it in Clipchamp. Which option is right depends on what you need to capture.
Which Windows screen recorder should you use?
There is no single built-in recorder that serves every purpose. Snipping Tool and Xbox Game Bar have different capture workflows, so choose based on the content you need in the recording.
| Tool | Best suited to | Capture and audio controls | After recording |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool | A chosen rectangular area of the screen on Windows 11 | Select the region before recording; the cited Microsoft instructions do not establish a universal frame rate, resolution, or audio-control specification | Save the clip or open it in Clipchamp |
| Xbox Game Bar | A game or app clip | Includes documented microphone and system-audio settings | MP4 saved under VideosCaptures |
| Clipchamp | Editing a recording, including adding captions or working with audio | Microsoft identifies it as a video editor that can also record the screen | Edit and export the video |
The comparison is about documented workflows, not a performance ranking. Microsoft’s cited support pages do not establish a general frame-rate, resolution, recording-duration, or speed advantage for either built-in capture route. App labels and availability may vary with Windows and Snipping Tool versions.
Record a selected area with Snipping Tool
On Windows 11, Snipping Tool’s video mode is the direct choice when you want to capture a portion of the screen rather than a game or app clip. Microsoft says the screen-recording feature was introduced for Windows 11 devices in 2023. It may not appear on every PC in the same form: Windows edition and the installed app version can affect availability.

- Drag to select the rectangular area you want to record.
- Select Start and perform the actions you want to capture.
- When finished, select Stop.
- Save the clip, or choose Edit in Clipchamp if you want to continue editing.
These controls follow Microsoft Support’s “Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots” instructions. If the Record control is missing, first check whether the PC runs Windows 11 and whether Snipping Tool is installed and up to date. Microsoft says the app ships with Windows and points users to the Microsoft Store if it is missing. On Windows N editions, the Snipping Tool screen recorder is documented as unavailable; see the Windows N section below.
When Snipping Tool is the better fit
- You need to record only a defined rectangular region, such as a section of a workflow or a particular panel.
- You want the shortest path from a video snip into Clipchamp for editing.
- You do not need the game/app capture workflow and audio controls documented for Game Bar.
Do not assume the selected-region workflow supports a particular frame rate, maximum duration, or audio setup: those specifications are not established by the cited Microsoft instructions.

Record a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
Xbox Game Bar is designed for recording a clip of a game or app. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. It also documents controls for microphone capture and system audio.
- If necessary, enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows Settings.
- Open the game or app you want to record.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R to start recording. Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- To toggle microphone recording while recording, press Windows key + Alt + M.
- Find the resulting MP4 file under VideosCaptures.
If you want system sound, Microsoft’s accessibility instructions direct users to Game Bar settings under Capturing and to choose All for audio capture. Check that setting before recording if desktop or app audio matters; the microphone toggle controls the microphone, not that system-audio selection.

When Game Bar is the better fit
- You are capturing a game or app rather than selecting an arbitrary screen rectangle.
- You need the documented microphone toggle while recording.
- You want the recording saved as an MP4 in the Captures folder.
Microsoft’s support material describes this as recording a game or app clip. It does not establish that Game Bar is a universal recorder for every desktop screen or window, so use Snipping Tool when the explicit goal is selecting a rectangular area.
Edit or caption a recording in Clipchamp
Snipping Tool offers an Edit in Clipchamp path after capture. Microsoft identifies Clipchamp as a video editor that can also record the screen, and describes using it to transcribe media for captions and to adjust, detach, or download audio. This makes it the documented next step when a raw clip needs editing rather than simply being saved.

Windows N editions
Windows 10/11 N editions omit media features that can affect recording. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack documentation says Snipping Tool screen recording is unavailable on N editions and that some Xbox functionality, including Game Bar and Game DVR, does not work. The Media Feature Pack is an optional feature for Windows 10/11 N, and Microsoft says a restart is required after installation. Do not treat installation as a guaranteed fix for every recording issue; the documented limitations do not promise that every missing control or failure will be resolved.

Windows 10
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The Game Bar recording instructions still apply to Windows 10, but after that date Windows 10 no longer receives Microsoft’s free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. The Snipping Tool screen-recording introduction cited here is specifically for Windows 11 devices; do not assume the same Snipping Tool video controls are available on a Windows 10 PC.
Troubleshoot a missing control or failed recording
| Symptom | Check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool has no Record option | Windows version/edition and the installed Snipping Tool version | The documented video snip is a Windows 11 feature. If the app is missing, Microsoft points users to the Microsoft Store. On Windows N, the feature is documented as unavailable. |
| Game Bar shortcut does not start a clip | Whether Game Bar is enabled and the game or app is open | Enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows Settings if needed, then open the target game or app and press Windows key + Alt + R. |
| Microphone is absent from the clip | Whether microphone recording is toggled on | While recording, press Windows key + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. |
| System sound is missing | Game Bar’s Capturing audio selection | In Game Bar settings under Capturing, select All as described in Microsoft’s instructions. |
| Game Bar or Game DVR features are unavailable on Windows N | Whether this is a Windows 10/11 N edition | Review Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance for N editions. It is optional and requires a restart; Microsoft does not promise it fixes every recording problem. |
If the interface differs from these steps, check the current Microsoft instructions for the installed app rather than assuming every PC has identical controls. The support guidance checked on September 29, 2026 is version-sensitive.

For recording the Windows desktop, use Snipping Tool or Game Bar above. ScreenshotNeo is a different kind of tool: it captures a webpage as an image or PDF from a URL; it does not record live activity on your Windows desktop. If your task is to capture a clean webpage image, one GET request is enough. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Details are at ScreenshotNeo. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Can I record a webcam at the same time as my screen with these steps?
The cited Microsoft instructions establish screen and app capture, Game Bar microphone controls, and Clipchamp editing, but do not establish a webcam-overlay workflow. Check the current controls in the apps on your PC before relying on webcam capture.
Can I assume every recording will have the same resolution or frame rate?
No. The Microsoft support instructions cited here do not state universal resolution or frame-rate values for these recording routes.
