How do I sell digital downloads on WordPress?
For a site focused on downloadable files, a digital-first store plugin is one route. Easy Digital Downloads (EDD), listed in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory, describes features including a setup wizard, cart and checkout, payment integrations, customer management, reports, and protected file delivery. The listing is the plugin publisher’s description, not an independent product test.
- Define the product. Decide what the buyer receives, including file type, version, included files, usage rights or license, and any updates or support you promise.
- Choose a plugin. Check that it supports your products, payment needs, delivery controls, and business model. A digital-first plugin may suit a catalog made up mostly of files. If your store also needs physical inventory and shipping, compare the digital plugin approach with a general ecommerce setup configured for downloads. The available directory listings do not establish a feature-by-feature comparison or a best plugin.
- Create the product page. Explain what the download does and who it is for. Include formats, file size, compatibility, license terms, and support or refund terms; use previews or screenshots when they help buyers judge the product.
- Connect payments. Choose a gateway available to your business, complete its account setup, and confirm current fees and terms with the processor. EDD’s listing names integrations including Stripe, Square, and PayPal, but availability depends on your country and merchant account.
- Configure delivery. Set up the plugin’s method for giving paying customers access to the file. EDD describes unique download links, expiration options, download limits, and IP tracking. These controls can help limit casual link sharing, but they do not prevent a buyer from copying or redistributing a downloaded file.
- Check the buying experience. If your payment gateway offers a sandbox or test mode, use it to review the product page, checkout, receipt, customer access, and download on desktop and mobile. This is a practical launch check, not a claim that a test purchase has been performed here.
- Prepare for ongoing support. Decide how you will handle refund requests, customer email changes, support questions, and corrected or updated files. If you plan to sell subscriptions, software licenses, or membership access, verify the current plugin plan and any extension costs before building around those functions.
Which WordPress plugin should I use?
Digital-first store plugin
A digital-first plugin is worth considering when the catalog is centered on files rather than shipped goods. EDD’s listing describes support for common formats such as PDF and EPUB ebooks, ZIP software, PSD design assets, MP3 and WAV audio, MP4 and MOV video, documents, and images. It also describes product variations and bundles.
The same listing identifies subscriptions, software licensing, membership content restrictions, and VAT tools as Pro capabilities. Check the current plans, extensions, and costs for the features you need; do not assume they are included in every version.

Other download plugins
The WordPress.org directory has a digital-products plugin category with multiple options. One example is Sell Downloads, whose listing describes downloadable products, PayPal, promotions, protected files, and sales tracking. These directory descriptions are not an independent ranking of price, reliability, ease of use, or security.
How to compare options
- Does your store sell mostly files, or does it also need physical inventory and shipping?
- Can customers use a payment gateway that supports your country and merchant account?
- What buyer access and file-delivery controls are available?
- Do you need one-time purchases only, or subscriptions, memberships, or software licensing?
- What is the total cost, including plugin extensions, payment processing, taxes, support, and hosting?
- Will the plugin work with your existing theme and site, and can you export or migrate the customer and product data you may need?
How should I set up the product page?
Make the offer clear before checkout so a buyer knows what they are paying for and whether the file will work for them. For an ebook, for example, identify the formats included and any device or software requirements. For a design asset, specify compatible software and the usage rights. For software, state supported platforms and what the purchase includes.
Rank #2
- Describe the contents and intended use in plain language.
- List file formats, approximate size, and compatibility requirements.
- State license or usage restrictions, update policy, and support scope.
- Explain any refund terms in language consistent with the rules that apply to your business and customers.
- Use a preview, sample, or screenshots when they help communicate what the customer will receive.
How can I deliver a file after someone pays?
Configure your ecommerce plugin to grant access after payment, then make sure the customer can find the download instructions or link in the expected place, such as the confirmation flow or customer account. EDD’s listing describes unique links, optional expiration, download limits, and IP tracking. These are access controls, not digital rights management: once a customer has the file, the plugin cannot guarantee that it will not be copied or shared.
Before launch, check the actual customer journey in the gateway’s test or sandbox mode if available. Confirm that a completed payment leads to the correct receipt and file access, that the link points to the intended version, and that the page remains usable on a phone as well as a computer.

What should I check before launch?
- Payments: Verify that the gateway accepts your business and is available in your location; review the processor’s current fees and terms.
- Product details: Confirm the right file, version, license information, and compatibility notes appear on the product page.
- Delivery: Check that access is granted after payment and that any link-expiration or download-limit settings match your support plan.
- Operations: Decide how customers can contact you about access, changed email addresses, refunds, and file corrections.
- Legal and tax matters: Digital-goods tax, VAT, invoicing, privacy, and consumer cancellation or refund rules depend on where you and your customers are located and on your circumstances. Consult current official guidance or a qualified adviser for the markets you serve.
