How to Automatically Save Snagit Captures (Windows and Mac)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snagit has two different meanings of “automatically save.” New captures can be retained automatically in the Snagit Library, or a capture preset can send each result to a standard image file such as PNG or JPEG. The first is best when you want Snagit to organize and edit captures later; the second is appropriate when another application needs a file in a known folder. On current Windows instructions, the Library setting is under Edit > Editor Preferences > Library. Menus and labels can vary by Snagit release and operating system.

Choose what “save” should produce

Goal Use What you get
Keep every capture available in Snagit Automatic Library retention A capture visible and searchable in the Library for later Snagit editing
Create a PNG, JPEG, WebP or another normal file File output in a capture preset A standalone file in the format and location you configure
Do both Leave Library retention enabled and configure File output Library access plus an exported file, subject to the preset and Editor settings

Turning off automatic Library saving does not make file export automatic. It removes Snagit’s automatic Library behavior so that you can decide how to save each image. TechSmith’s current Windows instructions are in How to Default to a File Type Other Than SNAGX.

Keep captures automatically in the Snagit Library (Windows)

  1. Open Snagit Capture.
  2. Open the Snagit Editor and choose Edit > Editor Preferences.
  3. Select the Library tab.
  4. Leave Automatically save new image captures in the Library checked.
  5. Capture an image and open the Library to confirm that it appears there.

This setting is the right answer when “save automatically” means “do not lose my captures and let me return to them in Snagit.” It does not promise a PNG or JPEG at a folder path. If you need that, configure File output as described below.

If you do not want automatic Library retention

In the same Windows preference page, clear Automatically save new image captures in the Library. Snagit will no longer place new image captures there automatically. You must then use the Editor or a File-output preset to save the result where you want it. Do not disable this option merely because you want PNG export; the two workflows solve different problems.

Send captures to a chosen file type and folder

A reusable capture preset is the practical way to repeat a direct-to-file workflow. The current TechSmith procedure was updated August 19, 2025 and is documented for Windows; your release may display slightly different labels.

  1. Open Snagit Capture and select the capture method (region, window, full screen or scrolling capture).
  2. Set the options you need, such as destination, delay and other capture controls.
  3. In the Share section, choose File.
  4. Open the File gear control.
  5. Choose the standard extension you need, such as PNG or JPEG, and set a filename if the dialog offers one.
  6. Choose the destination folder in the file settings.
  7. Save the configured setup as a new preset so it can be selected again from Snagit Capture.

If Preview in the Editor is enabled, Snagit opens the capture in the Editor first. Click Finish to finalize the output in the selected format. Therefore, a File preset with Editor preview is a repeatable export workflow, but it is not necessarily unattended: the Finish action remains part of the process.

Pick a format deliberately

  • PNG: preferable for interface screenshots, text and transparency.
  • JPEG: useful when a smaller photographic image matters more than lossless text edges.
  • SNAGX or Snagit’s native project format: retain this when you need editable Snagit objects, annotations and source elements rather than only a flattened image.

The exact extensions available depend on your Snagit version and the File-output dialog. Select the extension shown by your installation instead of assuming every release offers the same list.

  • Need later annotations, searching or organization in Snagit? Keep automatic Library saving enabled.
  • Need another program to read a file from a predictable directory? Configure File output and a preset.
  • Need a visual review before export? Keep Editor preview enabled and click Finish.
  • Need the fewest interactions? Turn off preview only after confirming that your preset’s File destination and naming behavior are correct; TechSmith’s instructions do not establish that every configuration runs fully unattended.

What “saved” meant in Snagit 2021 and earlier

TechSmith’s older documentation uses a distinction that still explains many confusing Library questions. In Snagit 2021 and earlier, an unsaved capture was already visible in the Library and stored as a .SNAG file in the Datastore. A saved capture was written in a user-selected format and location. Under those legacy defaults, the Library retained captures until the user deleted them. This explanation is specifically for Snagit 2021 and earlier; do not apply the old .SNAG/Datastore terminology to later versions without checking their documentation.

For the older behavior, see TechSmith’s saved-versus-unsaved explanation.

Find the Library on Mac and on newer installations

Mac and Windows do not share one universal path, and the path also depends on the release.

  • Snagit 2022 and newer on Mac: TechSmith says the default Library is ~/Pictures/Snagit.
  • Snagit 2021 and earlier on Mac: the default was ~/Pictures/Snagit/Autosaved Captures or ~/Documents/Snagit/Autosaved Captures.
  • Verify instead of guessing: on Mac, open Snagit > Settings > Advanced and inspect the displayed Library location.
  • Windows: use the Library preference and the location shown by your installed release; do not assume a path copied from another computer is valid.

The Mac locations and transfer guidance are described in TechSmith’s Apple-computer Library guide. It is a transfer guide, not a complete current macOS reference for every automatic-save preference, so follow the controls actually shown in your version.

Move or back up captures safely

Snagit 2022 and later

TechSmith’s transfer guidance says to copy the Library folder and then select that folder from Editor Preferences on the new installation. Close Snagit before copying, preserve the folder contents, and verify the destination in preferences after the move. The full procedure is in Move Unsaved Captures to a Different Computer; Back-up & Restore Library in Snagit.

Do not casually move a legacy Datastore

TechSmith warns that moving an old Datastore without exporting through Snagit can prevent captures from reopening in the Library. Its manual restore process replaces the current captures; it does not merge two Datastores. Back up the current Library before attempting a restore, and read Manually Backup and Restore a Snagit Datastore before touching legacy files.

Troubleshooting automatic saves

The capture appears in Snagit but no PNG exists

That is normal if only Library retention is enabled. Add a File-output preset, select the extension and destination, and run a test capture. If Editor preview is on, click Finish.

The file is in the wrong folder

Open the File gear in the preset and inspect its destination and filename settings. Do not rely on a remembered default path; verify the path displayed by the current installation.

Every capture still opens in the Editor

Preview is enabled. Decide whether review is required. If you disable preview, first test that File output, naming and overwrite behavior meet your needs; not every preset configuration is documented as fully unattended.

Turning off Library saving made captures difficult to find

Re-enable Automatically save new image captures in the Library under Edit > Editor Preferences > Library, or deliberately use File output and record the destination. Disabling the Library option removes automatic retention; it does not create a backup.

A moved Library is empty

Check that you selected the correct Library folder in preferences and that Snagit was closed during the copy. For legacy Datastores, stop and use TechSmith’s restore procedure rather than replacing folders by hand, because restore replaces current captures and does not merge them.

Menus do not match these steps

The documented path is a current Windows workflow and the File-output article was updated August 19, 2025. Snagit releases and platforms can rename controls. Search your installed Help panel for “Library,” “File output” or “preset,” and use the location shown in your version.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you actually need is a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a desktop capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

It also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

FAQ

Can Snagit save directly to a network share?

The supplied TechSmith instructions establish that File output can use a chosen destination, but they do not guarantee permissions, availability or reliability of a particular network share. Test the exact path with a small capture and ensure your operating system account can write there.

Will changing the Library preference convert existing captures?

No. The preference controls new image captures. Existing Library items remain where they are unless you explicitly export, move or restore them.

Is automatic Library retention a substitute for backup?

No. A Library is Snagit’s working collection, not a separate backup strategy. Copy or export it using the version-appropriate TechSmith procedure before changing computers or restoring older data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Snagit save directly to a network share?

The File output workflow supports a chosen destination, but share permissions and availability are environment-specific. Test the exact path with a small capture.

Will changing the Library preference convert existing captures?

No. It controls new image captures; existing items require an explicit export, move or restore.

Is automatic Library retention a backup?

No. Use the version-appropriate TechSmith backup or transfer procedure before migrations or restores.

The Bottom Line

Leave Library retention enabled when you want Snagit to keep captures for later editing. Create a File-output preset when you need PNG, JPEG or another standard file in a known location, and remember that Editor preview requires clicking Finish.
