If you want several pictures to appear in the article, use a Gallery block. If you need separate image fields that a theme, archive, or custom template can address independently, you need a plugin that adds those fields or a custom implementation—and your template must be coded to display them.
First decide what “multiple featured images” means
The phrase usually describes one of two different requirements:
| What you need | Best approach | Where images appear | Separate metadata fields? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several images visible in the article | WordPress Gallery block | Inside the post content | No |
| Two or more independently addressable images for layouts, listings, or templates | Plugin with multiple-image fields or custom development | Where the theme or template outputs them | Yes |
Adding several Image blocks to the editor does not create several featured-image fields. WordPress’s “Set as featured image” action assigns the selected image to the post’s single standard featured-image value; it does not add another slot.
Show multiple images inside a post with a Gallery block
This is the native solution when readers should see a group of photos as part of the article.

- Open the post in the WordPress block editor.
- Click the + inserter and choose Gallery, or create a new block and type
/gallery. - Upload images or select several files from the Media Library.
- Drag images into the desired order.
- Use the block settings to choose the number of columns and adjust image sizing or other available presentation options.
- Preview the post, then check the published front end. The active theme controls spacing, captions, links, and the final appearance.
A Gallery block is post content. It does not change the post’s featured-image metadata and cannot provide independent “featured image 2” or “featured image 3” values for an archive template.
Use separate featured-image fields for templates and listings
WordPress’s standard Featured Image control represents one image for a post. Separate fields require an additional data layer.
Option 1: Choose a plugin that explicitly adds multiple image fields
Look for a maintained plugin whose documented purpose is adding multiple featured images or extra image fields. Before activating one, inspect its live WordPress.org directory page and documentation for:

A directory listing for Bulk Featured Image mentions a multiple-featured-image feature, but its current compatibility and setup details are not established here. Treat that listing as a lead to verify, not as a compatibility guarantee or a complete installation guide.
Option 2: Build custom image fields
A developer can add extra image fields using post metadata or a custom-field system, then expose those values to the required templates. The implementation depends on the site’s theme, post type, editor, image sizes, fallback behavior, and desired output locations. Do not copy code intended for another theme or assume that a field created in the editor will automatically appear on the front end.
Make the theme output every added field
Creating fields is only half the job. The single core Post Featured Image block displays the post’s standard featured image; it does not automatically render plugin-added fields. Your theme, block template, Query Loop, or custom archive code must explicitly retrieve and place each additional image.

- Specify where each image belongs: hero area, card, sidebar, archive, or another location.
- Define what happens when a field is empty.
- Use appropriate image sizes and responsive markup.
- Check accessibility, including meaningful alternative text and decorative-image handling.
- Test single posts, archives, search results, mobile layouts, and any custom post type using the fields.
Why the Featured Image control may be missing
If you cannot find the standard Featured Image panel, the theme may not declare support for post thumbnails. Classic themes generally need the documented add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) declaration. The post type must also support thumbnails, and the panel may be hidden in editor settings or screen options.
Check these conditions
- Confirm that the active theme supports featured images.
- Confirm that the post type has thumbnail support enabled.
- Open editor preferences or screen options and make sure the Featured Image panel is visible.
- Verify that you are editing the intended post or custom post type.
- Switching themes can change whether the control appears and how the image is rendered.
Block-editor details that often cause confusion
Image block versus Gallery block
An Image block inserts one image into content. Its Set as featured image command assigns that image as the post’s standard featured image. A Gallery block organizes several images as content. Neither action creates multiple core featured-image fields.

Post Featured Image block
The Post Featured Image block is intended to display the post’s standard featured image, commonly in Site Editor templates and Query Loop layouts where the theme supports them. It is not a multi-image gallery and will not discover extra fields supplied by an unrelated plugin.

| Requirement | Use | Development work | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo set in the article body | Gallery block | None beyond editor configuration | Theme styling may alter presentation |
| One representative image for cards and social previews | Standard Featured Image | Theme support and normal template output | Only one core value exists |
| Different images in several template locations | Verified plugin or custom fields plus template output | Plugin configuration or development | Compatibility, maintenance, and missing template integration |
| Images for a custom post type | Featured-image support or custom fields configured for that post type | Depends on registration and theme | Post-type settings may hide or omit the fields |
Common failed approaches and fixes
“I inserted several images, but only one appears as featured”
That is expected: the standard field stores one representative image. Keep the images in a Gallery block for in-article display, or implement separate fields and template output for independent placement.
“The plugin fields exist, but nothing appears on the site”
The active template probably only outputs the core featured image. Follow the plugin’s documented retrieval method or have a developer add output for each field, then test every affected template.
“My gallery looks different from the editor preview”
Theme CSS, responsive breakpoints, image sizes, captions, and lightbox behavior can change the front-end result. Preview at the widths your visitors use and adjust the Gallery block and theme styles accordingly.

Best Value
“The Featured Image panel disappeared”
Check theme and post-type support, editor visibility settings, and whether a theme switch changed the available controls.
Bottom line
Use the built-in Gallery block when “multiple featured images” really means several images inside a post. WordPress does not provide an unlimited set of independent featured-image slots. For separate images used by archives, cards, or custom layouts, select a currently compatible solution that adds image fields and ensure the theme or templates explicitly render them.
