How to Accept Google Pay in WordPress with WooCommerce

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To accept Google Pay on a WordPress store, enable it through a payment provider that supports Google Pay. For WooCommerce, WooPayments documents a dashboard setup path that adds Google Pay as an express checkout option. Google Pay itself does not process or settle your store’s transactions; your payment provider does.

What you need before adding Google Pay

  • A compatible payment provider: Google says merchants need an existing payment service provider to process Google Pay API transactions. You generally turn Google Pay on within a supported WooCommerce gateway rather than install a standalone button.
  • An eligible business location: WooPayments is available only to businesses based in supported countries. The relevant country is where the business is registered, not simply where its owner lives. Check WooPayments’ current country list before starting signup, since availability can change.
  • A secure, current site: WooPayments requires an SSL certificate and a website accessible over HTTPS. Keep WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP current, and verify the plugin’s live requirements before installing or updating.

There are two separate geography checks: WooPayments’ list determines whether your business can sign up, while Google’s country and region guidance describes where shoppers can use Google Pay. Shopper availability can also depend on device and feature.

How to add Google Pay to WooCommerce with WooPayments

  1. Check your business eligibility and site prerequisites. Confirm that your business’s registered country is on the supported-country list and that your site loads over HTTPS.
  2. Install or open WooPayments. In your WordPress dashboard, look under WooCommerce > Payments to see whether it is already available. If you need to install it, WooCommerce’s Startup Guide describes installation from WooCommerce > Payments or Plugins > Add Plugin.
  3. Complete merchant onboarding. Follow Payments > Complete setup, choose the payment methods you want to offer, connect a WordPress.com account, and enter and verify your business details. Select the correct registered business country: WooPayments says the account country cannot be changed later.
  4. Enable Google Pay. Open Payments > Settings, enable WooPayments, and configure payment methods and express checkouts. Google Pay is listed among WooPayments’ express checkout options.
  5. Run a test checkout, then switch to live payments. Use WooPayments test mode to simulate checkout before accepting real orders. When you are ready to take payments, turn test mode off. Do not enter real card details while test mode is on.

Check plugin requirements before installation or an update

WooPayments’ official plugin pages do not state the same PHP minimum: the WordPress.org listing reports PHP 7.4 or higher, while the plugin readme lists PHP 7.3 or higher alongside WordPress 6.0 or newer and WooCommerce 7.6 or newer. Because those published requirements differ, check the current plugin listing and the plugin readme for the release you plan to install. Do not treat the lower PHP number as a universal current guarantee.

Choosing a different WooCommerce payment provider

WooPayments is a documented route, not the only possible one. Google’s guidance says merchants need an existing payment provider, so if you already use another WooCommerce gateway, check whether it supports Google Pay for your business location and the shopper markets you serve. Compare the practical setup requirements before switching or adding a gateway:

When a custom Google Pay API integration makes sense

A hand-built integration is separate from enabling Google Pay in a gateway plugin. Google’s production guidance requires a supported payment gateway or a PCI DSS-compliant environment appropriate for handling cardholder data. Its publishing process includes creating a Google Pay Business Profile, adding the website’s top-level domain in the Google Pay & Wallet Console, choosing a Gateway or Direct integration, uploading screenshots, submitting for review, and configuring production credentials after approval.

Google’s Console guidance also makes clear that Google does not process API transactions: your payment provider must do that. For a typical WooCommerce shop, the documented gateway setting is the more direct path; consider a custom integration only when you have a specific requirement that a supported provider cannot meet. See Google’s Google Pay API and Console guidance and its integration publishing steps.
