To view an image larger in Google Sheets, select it and enlarge it. An image placed over cells can be resized directly by dragging its blue handles. If the image is inside a cell, open its image menu, choose Put image over cells, resize it, and move it back into a cell afterward if you need to preserve the original layout.
Google Sheets does not document a separate full-size preview command for an in-cell image. The practical method is to change its placement temporarily or use the IMAGE function with an appropriate sizing mode.
How image placement affects viewing
Sheets treats images in two different ways. Knowing which type you have determines how you can enlarge it.

Changing an image from in-cell to over-cells changes its placement; it does not create a second copy. If you need the image to occupy a particular cell again, use the image menu to put it back into the selected cell after you finish inspecting it.

Enlarge an image on Google Sheets desktop
When the image is already over the cells
- Open the spreadsheet in the desktop web version of Google Sheets.
- Click the image once. Blue resize handles should appear around its boundary.
- Drag a corner handle outward to enlarge the image. Drag inward to reduce it.
- Drag from the image itself, rather than a handle, if you also need to reposition it.
Corner handles are preferable when you want to preserve the image’s proportions. Stretching from a side handle can change the width or height independently and may distort the picture.
When the image is inside a cell
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Put image over cells from the image options.
- Click the now-floating image to reveal the blue handles.
- Drag a corner handle until the image is large enough to inspect.
- When finished, use the image menu to put it back into the selected cell if the sheet must retain its in-cell layout.
This is the closest documented desktop workflow to a full-size preview for an in-cell image. It lets you inspect details without permanently changing the way the sheet is organized, provided you return the image to its original placement.
Inspecting temporarily without keeping the change
For a quick look, move the image over the cells, enlarge it, and then undo the placement and resize operations when done. Undo is a practical way to restore the previous state, but it is not described by Google as a dedicated image-preview command. If other edits were made afterward, review the undo history before using it so you do not remove unrelated work.

View and manipulate images in the Android app
Google’s Android instructions cover images that are over cells: tap the image and drag it to move it. For an image in a cell, the documented actions include cutting and pasting it to another cell and tapping it to delete it.

Use the IMAGE function when the source has a supported URL
If the image is available at a URL that Google Sheets accepts, you can display it with a formula:

=IMAGE(url, mode, height, width)The function’s default mode is 1. The four modes control how the image is fitted inside the cell:

None of these modes automatically resizes the cell. Increase the row height or column width separately if the image needs more visible space. Mode 3 is not the same as opening a separate original-size viewer: it keeps the source dimensions, but the cell can still crop the result.

URL and format restrictions
- The URL must be reachable in a way supported by the
IMAGEfunction. - URLs hosted at
drive.google.comcannot be used byIMAGE. - SVG is unsupported by the
IMAGEfunction. - For images inserted through Sheets’ interface, Google documents PNG, JPG, and GIF support and a file size below 50 MB. SVG is unsupported there as well.
- A cell containing an inserted image cannot also contain text.

=IMAGE("https://example.com/photo.jpg",4,600,900)Replace https://example.com/photo.jpg with a supported image URL. A page URL that merely displays an image is not necessarily a direct image URL; the address must resolve to the image resource itself.
Choose the right method for your goal

Troubleshooting
The blue handles do not appear
You may have selected the cell rather than the over-cell image, or the image is still in-cell. Click the image itself. If it remains in-cell, right-click it and choose Put image over cells before trying again.
The image looks stretched
Resize with a corner handle, or change an IMAGE formula from mode 2 to mode 1. Mode 2 intentionally fills the cell by stretching or compressing the source.

Mode 3 cuts off part of the picture
Mode 3 keeps original dimensions, but the cell does not resize automatically. Increase the row height and column width, or switch to mode 1 or mode 4 with dimensions that fit the available cell area.
The formula returns an error or no image
- Check that the URL points directly to an image and is not a
drive.google.comaddress. - Confirm that the source format is supported; SVG is not supported.
- Check the formula’s commas, quotation marks, mode number, and pixel arguments.
- If the image requires a login, a private session, or a token that expires, Sheets may not be able to fetch it.
The image will not fit with text in the same cell
Inserted images occupy the cell and cannot share it with text. Put the text in a neighboring cell, or use an over-cell image positioned beside the text.
The image is too large to insert
Google documents a limit of under 50 MB for images inserted through the interface. Reduce the file size or convert it to a supported PNG, JPG, or GIF before inserting.
Moving the image changed my layout
That is expected when switching between in-cell and over-cell placement. Return it to the selected cell through the image menu, or use undo if the move was only for a temporary inspection. Verify the selected cell before putting the image back.
