Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The standard Windows screenshot folder is %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. On a typical account, that resolves to C:Users<your-user-name>PicturesScreenshots. The exact visible path can differ if you moved the Pictures library or use OneDrive folder backup. Your capture method also matters: Snipping Tool and Windows+PrtScn can create files automatically, while PrtSc alone normally copies an image to the clipboard.
Open the default Screenshots folder immediately
- Open File Explorer with Windows+E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshotsand press Enter.
Environment variables make this work regardless of your Windows account name. If the folder exists, File Explorer opens it. If it does not, the screenshot location may have been redirected, the capture may only be in the clipboard, or Snipping Tool may be configured not to save automatically.
Where Windows normally saves screenshots
Windows defines a per-user known folder called Screenshots (the Windows known-folder identifier is FOLDERID_Screenshots). Its conventional location is the Screenshots subfolder inside that user’s Pictures folder:
C:Users<your-user-name>PicturesScreenshots
It is not one fixed system-wide directory. Each Windows user has an independent Pictures and Screenshots location, and either can be redirected. A work or school policy, a manually moved library, or OneDrive-backed Pictures can therefore produce a different path.

What each Windows capture method does
| Method | Typical result | Automatic file? | Capture scope and editing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool | A snip opens in the Snipping Tool workflow | Current versions can automatically save to the Screenshots folder | Rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture; editing and annotation are available |
| Windows+Shift+S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay | The resulting snip follows Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting | Select a region, window, or full screen, then edit or save in Snipping Tool |
| PrtSc or PrtScn | Copies the whole screen to the clipboard | No guaranteed file is created | Paste into Paint, an editor, email, or another app and save manually |
| Windows+PrtScn | Uses the Windows full-screen screenshot workflow | Saves a file automatically, normally in Screenshots | Full screen; the file follows any redirected Screenshots location |
Keyboard labels vary. Some laptops print PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen, and may require Fn as well. The important distinction is whether the shortcut saves a file or only places pixels on the clipboard.
Where Windows+Shift+S screenshots go
Windows+Shift+S launches the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Select an area, and a notification or preview normally takes you into Snipping Tool. When automatic saving is enabled, the image is written to the configured Screenshots folder. If automatic saving is disabled, use the Snipping Tool window’s Save button and choose a location yourself.
To inspect the current behavior:
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the default Screenshots folder shown there.
A capture that appears in the notification but is not in Pictures may still be unsaved. Open the preview, press Ctrl+S or choose Save, and check the destination displayed in the dialog.
Why PrtSc screenshots are missing from Pictures
Pressing PrtSc by itself is clipboard-oriented. Windows copies the screen image but does not promise a file in the Screenshots folder. To save it:

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Press PrtSc.
- Open Paint or another image editor.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste.
- Choose File > Save as, select PNG, JPEG, or another format, and pick a folder.
If you need a one-step full-screen file, use Windows+PrtScn instead. The screen may briefly dim to confirm the capture, and the resulting file should appear in the configured Screenshots folder.
How to find a moved Screenshots folder
The known folder can be moved from the default location. In File Explorer:
- Open Pictures and locate Screenshots.
- Right-click Screenshots and choose Properties.
- Open the Location tab.
- Read the path, or choose Move to select a new folder.
- Apply the change and confirm that you want existing files moved when Windows asks.
If there is no Location tab, inspect the parent Pictures folder instead; redirecting Pictures changes the effective path for Screenshots. Windows stores per-user shell-folder locations, so a change affects that account rather than every user on the PC.
OneDrive and the effective screenshot path
Microsoft no longer provides a separate Save screenshots to OneDrive switch in OneDrive settings. To back up screenshots, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. When Pictures is inside OneDrive, the effective path can look like:
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
C:Users<user>OneDrivePicturesScreenshots
The exact OneDrive path depends on the account and folder location. Do not assume that every Windows screenshot is in OneDrive: only a redirected or backed-up Pictures folder changes the path. Check the Screenshots folder’s Location tab and the OneDrive folder-backup status to determine what applies to your account.
How to change where Snipping Tool saves screenshots
- Launch Snipping Tool.
- Open See More > Settings.
- Find the automatic-save or default Screenshots-folder control.
- Choose the new folder and confirm.
- Take a test snip, save it, and verify the destination in File Explorer.
The setting controls Snipping Tool’s automatic behavior. It does not turn PrtSc into an automatic file-saving shortcut; that key still requires a paste-and-save step unless you use a different keyboard utility or shortcut.
A reliable checklist when you cannot find a screenshot
- Identify the shortcut. PrtSc may have placed the image only on the clipboard.
- Check the standard path. Open
%USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. - Check Snipping Tool settings. The automatic-save option and folder may have changed.
- Inspect Location. A redirected Screenshots or Pictures folder can be elsewhere.
- Check OneDrive. Look for
OneDrivePicturesScreenshotsif Pictures backup or redirection is enabled. - Save the open preview. A Snipping Tool notification is not proof that a file was written.
- Search by file date. In File Explorer, search the user profile for recently modified
.png,.jpg, or.webpfiles. - Check the active account. A screenshot made under another Windows user is stored in that user’s profile.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Screenshots folder is empty
First determine whether the shortcut saved a file. For PrtSc, paste the clipboard into Paint and save it. For Snipping Tool, open See More > Settings and enable automatic saving or use Save on each capture. Then verify the folder shown by the Location tab.
Windows says the path does not exist
The folder may not have been created yet, or Pictures may be redirected. Open %USERPROFILE%Pictures, search for Screenshots, and inspect Properties > Location. Taking a test capture with Windows+PrtScn can also create the standard folder if the known-folder mapping is intact.

The screenshot appears in OneDrive, not local Pictures
That is expected when Pictures is backed up or redirected. Use the OneDrive Pictures path and treat it as the effective location for that account. The missing standalone OneDrive screenshot switch cannot be restored from current OneDrive settings.
Automatic saving stopped after an update or reset
Open Snipping Tool’s Settings and recheck automatic saving and the selected folder. Also confirm that the destination is writable and that you are using the intended Windows account. Save one test image manually to separate a capture problem from a folder-permission problem.
The laptop’s Print Screen key does nothing
Try Fn+PrtSc, or use Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool. On compact keyboards, the printed key may share another function, and manufacturer settings can change its behavior.

Windows screenshot location: the short answer
Start with %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. Then account for the capture method: Snipping Tool and Windows+PrtScn can save files, while PrtSc alone normally does not. If the folder is missing or empty, inspect Snipping Tool’s Settings, the folder’s Location tab, and any OneDrive redirection of Pictures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows save screenshots as PNG files?
Windows screenshot workflows commonly produce image files, but the format can depend on the capture application and save action. Check the file extension in the destination folder or choose a format when saving manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use the same Screenshots folder for every Windows account?
The known Screenshots folder is per-user. You can choose a shared folder manually, but Windows does not use one universal default path for all accounts.
Will deleting the Screenshots folder break Windows screenshots?
It can prevent an expected destination from appearing until Windows or Snipping Tool recreates or is pointed to a valid folder. Set and test the destination in Snipping Tool Settings before relying on it.
