Best Chrome add-on for a YouTube screenshot button
Screenshot YouTube
Screenshot YouTube is the straightforward choice when you want a button inside the YouTube player. Its Chrome Web Store listing says the button saves a still image as a file, copies it to the clipboard, or performs both actions. Optional keyboard shortcuts and playback-rate controls can help when you are stepping through a lecture, demonstration or sports replay.
The listing displayed 500,000 users in 2026, but that number is not an efficacy test. Version 3.0.0 was listed as updated December 27, 2024, so check that it still works with the current YouTube player before deploying it to a team or automation workflow. The developer’s privacy panel disclosed no data collection or use.

#1 Best Overall
Best Chrome choice for YouTube, Vimeo and embeds
Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services
This add-on is the most flexible pick when “YouTube screenshot” is only part of the job. The listing describes controls on YouTube and Vimeo players, support for embedded videos, and capture from a keyboard shortcut or popup on other pages. It advertises PNG, JPEG and WebP output, adjustable quality, clipboard copying and captures at native video resolution.
Its version 3.1.0 listing was updated July 27, 2026 and showed 8,000 users and 113 ratings. The developer says it does not collect or use user data. The listing also says page access is granted only when you click the capture shortcut or popup, a narrower activation model than an extension that continuously reads every tab.
Best if you need extra editing features
Video Screenshot
Video Screenshot supports YouTube and multiple other services and can save JPG or PNG files or copy a frame to the clipboard. A paid tier adds subtitle capture and cropping for letterboxed content, which may matter when a video has black bars or burned-in captions.
The Chrome listing showed version 7.0.7, updated August 23, 2026, with 100,000 users and 784 ratings. Its privacy disclosure lists personally identifiable information and authentication information. That is a developer disclosure, not an independent audit; inspect the current permissions and privacy policy before installing, especially in a work profile.

Best Firefox add-on
YouTube Screenshot Button
Firefox users can use YouTube Screenshot Button for one-click JPG captures from YouTube and OK.ru, including embedded players. Mozilla’s listing explicitly states: “Important: the extension does not support screenshots from YouTube Shorts.” It requires access to data for all websites, so review that permission in Firefox before installation.
Mozilla showed 396 users and 52 reviews when checked. Version 0.7.69.0 was last updated February 9, 2026. Those counts can change and should not be treated as a performance ranking.
Shorts, embeds and DRM: check before you install
- Shorts: YouTube Screenshot Button for Firefox excludes Shorts. Some Chrome listings and the Screenshot for YouTube project README advertise Shorts support, but support can change with YouTube’s interface.
- Embedded players: Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services and YouTube Screenshot Button describe embedded-player support. Confirm the button appears on the particular site hosting the embed.
- DRM: The low-visibility Video Frame Capture listing says DRM-protected video cannot be captured. A browser add-on cannot override protected playback.
- Clean frame: These tools are intended to capture the video image without normal browser chrome; controls, subtitles and letterboxing depend on the extension and player state.
How to capture a frame reliably
- Install the listing for your browser and review its current permissions, privacy disclosure, version and last-updated date.
- Open the video directly on YouTube rather than an unusual redirect. For an embed, open the page containing the player.
- Pause at the exact frame. Use the player’s frame-by-frame controls where available, or move the timeline in small increments.
- Click the extension’s player button, use its configured shortcut, or open its popup. If no button appears, reload the tab after installation and verify the extension is enabled for that site.
- Choose the output action: download a file, copy to the clipboard, or both. If formats are offered, use PNG for interface text and diagrams, JPEG for smaller photographic files, and WebP when your destination supports it.
- Open the saved image and check that it contains the intended frame, subtitles and crop. Keep the original URL and timestamp with the file for later identification.
Permissions, privacy and copyright
Store privacy panels are not uniform. One Chrome listing reports no data collection, another says access is activated only when you invoke capture, and Video Screenshot discloses personally identifiable and authentication information. Treat these as statements from developers, not independent audits. Recheck permissions after updates and avoid installing an add-on whose access does not fit your use.
A screenshot is not automatically free to republish. YouTube Help explains that copyright owners have the legal right to use and distribute their content and decide who else can, too. Reuse may depend on permission, an applicable exception such as fair use or fair dealing, public-domain status, or a Creative Commons license. The default YouTube upload license is Standard YouTube; Creative Commons Attribution has its own attribution conditions. Rules differ by country, and none of these routes guarantees that a claim will not be made.

Troubleshooting
No Screenshot button appears
Reload the video after installing, pin or enable the extension, and test a direct youtube.com watch page. A redesigned player or an embedded frame may not expose the selectors an older version expects. Check the listing’s update date before assuming your browser is at fault.
The image is black, blank or lower quality
Move the playhead to a normal, fully loaded frame and wait for the video to render. Protected or DRM playback may block capture. If the add-on offers native resolution or quality settings, select them before capturing; browser zoom does not increase the source video resolution.
Shorts do not work
That is an explicit limitation of YouTube Screenshot Button for Firefox. Try a Chrome listing that advertises Shorts support, understanding that the claim comes from the listing and can change.
Clipboard copying fails
Allow clipboard access when the browser prompts, keep the tab focused, and try saving a file instead. Managed browsers may disable clipboard permissions.
Rank #4
An embedded video cannot be captured
Use an add-on that explicitly supports embedded players, click inside the player first, and check whether the frame is cross-origin or DRM protected. Some sites hide the player until consent or a user interaction occurs.
Performance, maintenance and cost considerations
- Captures are local browser actions in the listed workflows; large native-resolution frames consume more disk space and clipboard memory than compressed images.
- Extensions tied to player buttons can break when YouTube changes its DOM or playback controls. Prefer a recently updated listing for ongoing work, but do not treat recency as a guarantee.
- Ratings and user counts are useful visibility signals only. The available listings do not provide independent measurements of capture accuracy, speed or failure rate.
- Paid tiers can add convenience features such as subtitle capture or letterbox cropping, but compare those features with your actual workflow before paying.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable captures in a script or an AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; and its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For a public YouTube page or another URL, use the documented GET endpoint:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options such as viewport and format controls. The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Start with the free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots per month without a card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these add-ons in Safari or Edge?
The listings covered here identify Chrome or Firefox support. A Chromium browser may accept a Chrome extension, but verify compatibility in that browser’s own store and policy settings.
Do these extensions remove YouTube controls from every capture?
The listings describe still-frame capture, but control removal, subtitles and cropping vary by extension and player state. Inspect each saved image rather than assuming identical output.
Can I republish a frame from a YouTube video?
Not automatically. Permission, license terms and legal exceptions vary by work and jurisdiction; a capture does not transfer copyright.
The Bottom Line
For Chrome, start with Screenshot YouTube if you want a dedicated YouTube player button, or Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services for Vimeo and embedded players. Firefox users should consider YouTube Screenshot Button, but it does not support Shorts. Review permissions, update dates and the current listing before relying on any add-on.
