Most of these extensions can download a PNG or JPEG, copy the frame to your clipboard, or do both. Check the captured file before leaving the video: a small timing error, visible controls, or a black frame can make the result unusable.
Capture a YouTube frame in five steps
- Install an extension. Open its current Chrome Web Store listing, review the publisher, permissions, supported sites and update date, then select Add to Chrome and confirm.
- Open the video. Load the YouTube watch page (or the supported embedded player) and let the video reach the section you need.
- Pause precisely. Drag the playhead, use the left and right arrow keys for fine movement, and pause before capturing. Waiting for the image to finish rendering is important when the player is adaptive or still loading.
- Capture from the player. Select the extension’s camera or Screenshot button. Depending on the extension, the button appears inside the YouTube player, in the browser toolbar, or both. Keyboard alternatives documented by current listings include Alt+Shift+S for Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services and Alt+S for Screenshot for YouTube — Video Frame Capture.
- Save and verify. Choose a download, clipboard copy, or both when offered. Open the resulting image and check that the intended frame is sharp, the controls are absent, and no black or partially rendered area was captured.
If controls are visible, move the pointer away and wait for them to disappear before pressing the capture button. Some extensions provide a clean-frame option that hides the controls automatically.

Choosing PNG, JPEG or WebP
PNG for editing and text
PNG is lossless, so it is the safer choice when you will crop, annotate, inspect small details or keep text and interface edges crisp. It generally produces a larger file.

JPEG or WebP for smaller files
JPEG and WebP can reduce file size when the extension offers them. Compression may introduce ringing or block artifacts around subtitles, faces and high-contrast edges. Open the saved image at 100% before publishing or using it as evidence.
Native playback quality still matters
A screenshot cannot contain detail that the player did not receive. Set YouTube to the highest practical quality, allow the frame to finish loading, and avoid judging a still while the player is displaying a low-resolution adaptive stream. An extension that reads the video element directly can avoid some browser-compositing problems, but it cannot create missing source detail.
Getting a clean frame without controls
- Pause at the desired instant.
- Move the pointer outside the player and wait until the timeline and play button fade.
- Use the extension’s in-player camera control or shortcut rather than the operating system’s general screenshot command.
- If the extension offers a clean-frame setting, enable it and capture again.
- Inspect the result for subtitles, watermarks or overlays that were genuinely part of the video; a clean-frame feature removes player UI, not content baked into the video.
A conventional desktop screenshot can include the play button, timeline or page title. Dedicated extensions place capture in the player and may read the video element directly, which can help avoid black frames caused by compositing. No extension is guaranteed to work with every protected or embedded playback mode.
Shortcuts, fullscreen and embedded players
Keyboard shortcuts
Shortcuts are useful when a player button is hidden or when you need repeatable captures. Browser and extension shortcuts can conflict with operating-system or accessibility shortcuts. If nothing happens, click the page once, confirm the extension is enabled for the tab, and review Chrome’s extension shortcut settings.

Fullscreen
Fullscreen can provide a larger viewing area, but it may change where the extension injects its button. Test one frame first. If the control disappears in fullscreen, exit fullscreen and capture from the normal player, or use the documented shortcut.
Shorts and embedded videos
Support for Shorts, embedded players and other video sites is extension-specific. Look for explicit coverage in the current Chrome Web Store listing. A YouTube watch page that works in one extension is not proof that an iframe or Shorts URL will work in another.
Privacy, permissions and maintenance checks
A screenshot extension can need access to pages containing the player. Treat that access as sensitive: read the permissions in the current listing, identify the publisher, check the last update date and remove extensions you no longer use. Prefer an extension whose stated scope matches your task instead of granting broad access without understanding it. Ratings and user counts are store metadata, not a guarantee that the extension will work on your particular video.
Limitations you should expect
DRM-protected playback
Extensions cannot capture DRM-protected videos when the protection is enforced below the browser-extension layer. Do not attempt to bypass that protection. Use an authorized export or still-image workflow supplied by the rights holder instead.

Black or blank captures
Black output can result from protected playback, a frame that has not rendered, a player transition or browser compositing. First pause on a fully visible frame and retry. If ordinary videos remain black, test another supported extension and a non-embedded YouTube watch page.
Overlays and consent dialogs
Cookie prompts, sign-in notices, live-chat overlays and end-screen cards can cover the player. Dismiss permitted dialogs, wait for the controls to fade, and capture before an end screen appears. An extension’s clean-frame option generally targets player controls, not every overlay inserted by the page.
Copyright and permitted use
Saving a frame is a technical action; publishing or redistributing it can raise copyright, privacy or platform-policy issues. Obtain permission when required, especially for commercial use, identifiable people or content you do not own.
Troubleshooting checklist

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a frame from a YouTube live stream?
Only if the extension supports the live-player mode and the frame is rendered normally. Test a short capture first; live playback, latency and changing controls can affect timing.
Does pausing guarantee the exact source frame?
It pauses the displayed playback position, but browser rendering and stream timing can still matter. Use frame-by-frame keys where available and verify the saved image.
Why is a browser extension preferable to Print Screen?
A dedicated extension can capture the video area or video element instead of the whole desktop, reducing player controls and unrelated page content. It still cannot overcome DRM or unavailable source detail.
