Browserless Alternatives: Which Browser or Scraping Tool Fits Your Workload?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Browserless alternative depends on what you use Browserless for. For managed Playwright or Puppeteer sessions and agent workflows, compare Browserbase and Steel. For scraping rendered content or protected sites, consider scraping APIs such as ZenRows or Bright Data. If you need infrastructure you control, run Playwright or Puppeteer yourself—or self-host Browserless, subject to its licensing terms. For a screenshot-only task, a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo may be a simpler alternative: it returns a screenshot or PDF from one request instead of giving you a remote browser session.

Start with the job you need Browserless to do

Browserless is a managed headless-browser platform, not just a screenshot service. It supports Puppeteer and Playwright connections over WebSocket, offers REST and GraphQL APIs for tasks such as screenshots, PDFs, scraping, and content extraction, and can run in Browserless Cloud or in a Docker deployment you operate. Its broader product surface includes Browser Automation Protocol (BAP), Browsers as a Service (BaaS), stateless REST endpoints, AI-agent and MCP integrations, and enterprise or private deployments.

That breadth makes “alternative” ambiguous. A service that accepts a URL and returns extracted content may be a good replacement for a one-request scrape, but not for a workflow that opens pages, clicks controls, preserves session state, and needs interactive debugging. Before comparing providers, identify the output and control model you actually need.

  • Interactive automation: You need a browser session controlled by existing Playwright or Puppeteer code. Compare managed browser platforms or operate your own browsers.
  • One-off output: You need a screenshot, PDF, rendered HTML, or extracted data from a URL. Compare stateless APIs, which may avoid browser-session management.
  • Protected-site access: Your task depends on proxies, geography, CAPTCHA handling, or other anti-bot measures. Evaluate scraping-oriented services against your actual target sites and regions.
  • Infrastructure ownership: You need sessions to remain in your own environment. Compare self-hosting options, and include licensing, security, patching, and capacity in the decision.

No neutral, cross-provider benchmark or reliability statistic is established in the available sources. Vendor descriptions and performance statements should therefore be treated as claims to validate against your own pages, region, and workload—not as a guarantee of results.

Browserbase: a managed-browser alternative for sessions and agents

Browserbase is the closest like-for-like hosted comparison when you want managed cloud browsers alongside agent-oriented tooling. Its pricing page, crawled in 2026, lists Free, Developer, and Startup entry plans, with custom enterprise pricing beyond them. The same page describes concurrency, browser hours, agent runs, search and fetch APIs, Playwright, Puppeteer, and data-retention capabilities.

Browserbase plan Monthly price listed (pricing page crawled 2026) Concurrent browsers listed Browser hours listed
Free $0/month 3 1
Developer $20/month 25 100
Startup $99/month 100 500
Enterprise Custom pricing Not stated on the cited pricing page summary Not stated on the cited pricing page summary

These are figures listed on Browserbase’s pricing page when it was crawled in 2026; plans and quotas can change. A monthly headline price is not enough to compare operating cost. Check the current plan page for browser-hour limits, session limits, agent-run allowances, retention, proxy charges, and any CAPTCHA-related capabilities that matter to your use case.

When Browserbase is a fit

  • You want cloud-hosted browser sessions rather than managing browser processes and machines yourself.
  • Your application uses Playwright or Puppeteer and you want to compare the migration effort of connecting it to a managed service.
  • Agent runs or the listed search and fetch APIs are relevant to your workflow.

What to verify before switching

Map your peak simultaneous sessions to the concurrency allowance, and estimate actual browser time rather than assuming every task uses the same amount. Confirm how retention works for your session data and whether proxy costs are separate. If your automation relies on anti-bot handling, ask how the relevant capability is provided and test it on the specific sites you need; the presence of a feature does not establish success against every target.

Steel: managed sessions with a self-hosting path

Steel positions itself around cloud browser automation, persistent sessions, and an open-source browser that can be self-hosted. Its comparison article describes session-based pricing with proxies and stealth included, no per-request or idle fees, and free self-hosting of the open-source project. Those are Steel’s own claims; check its current commercial terms and license details before building a cost or compliance decision around them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steel’s product page also promotes large-scale scraping and autonomous agents, offers a Playwright starter path, and reports average session starts in under one second when the client is in the same region. That is a vendor-reported figure under a stated regional condition, not an independent benchmark or a promise for other regions and workloads.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

When Steel is a fit

  • You want a managed browser option but value a path to self-hosting.
  • Persistent sessions are important to your automation.
  • You prefer evaluating pricing around sessions, provided the current definition of a billable session and included proxy or stealth services matches your usage.

Questions to resolve

Check what “persistent” means for session lifetime and storage, how self-hosting changes your operational duties, and what support and security features are available for your deployment. Test session startup and page behavior in the same region as your production client. Do not extrapolate the vendor’s same-region startup statement into a general performance estimate.

Scraping-first services: ZenRows and Bright Data

If your objective is rendered HTML or structured data rather than full browser control, a scraping API may fit better than a persistent remote-browser connection. A ZenRows comparison identifies ZenRows and Bright Data Browser API among the alternatives in the protected-web-access market, alongside Browserbase, Playwright, Bright Data, Oxylabs, Firecrawl, Browserless, and ScrapingBee.

The comparison describes Bright Data Browser API as running Puppeteer, Playwright, or Selenium workloads on managed Chromium browsers, with proxy management, JavaScript rendering, and CAPTCHA solving. Those capabilities are relevant when access conditions—not just rendering—are the main problem. The cited material does not establish a neutral success rate, a universal CAPTCHA outcome, or a like-for-like price comparison for these providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a scraping API when the output matters more than the session

A one-request API can be a sensible fit when a job begins with a URL and ends with content, structured fields, or another artifact. It can reduce the work of maintaining browser processes and orchestrating each session. But an endpoint that returns extracted content may not give you the same session-level control, debugging visibility, or interaction model as a remote browser. Confirm that it supports the interactions your site requires before replacing browser code.

Test protected access against the real target

Anti-bot behavior varies by site, request pattern, geography, and time. Identify which regions your requests must use and whether you need JavaScript rendering, proxy routing, CAPTCHA handling, or interactive steps. Run a small, compliant evaluation using representative pages and record both successful outputs and failure modes; do not infer that a provider’s advertised capability guarantees access to every site.

Local Playwright or Puppeteer: maximum ownership, maximum operations

Running Playwright or Puppeteer on a workstation, CI runner, VM, or Kubernetes cluster minimizes dependence on a browser vendor. It is a true alternative only if your team is prepared to operate the browser infrastructure that a managed service would otherwise handle. Browserless describes its value in part as removing that infrastructure burden.

With a self-operated deployment, the team owns browser binaries and updates, concurrency, isolation between jobs, observability, retry behavior, and capacity planning. You also need to decide how to handle credentials, cookies, network access, and potentially untrusted page content. A small script on a developer machine and a multi-tenant production browser fleet have very different security and reliability requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When local or self-operated browsers make sense

  • You need control over the runtime, network, or deployment location.
  • Your volume and workload justify building operational safeguards.
  • You have engineering capacity to patch browser dependencies, isolate jobs, and monitor failures.

When they are a poor fit

If you need to ship quickly and do not want to maintain browser infrastructure, the apparent savings can become engineering and operations work. Estimate the full cost: compute, storage, proxy services if needed, on-call ownership, scaling headroom, and the time spent diagnosing browser and site changes.

Self-hosted Browserless: keep the model, own the deployment

If the main reason for leaving Browserless Cloud is deployment ownership, self-hosted Browserless may preserve a more familiar API and workflow than switching vendors. Browserless states that its open-source Docker image is free under SSPL-1.0 for open-source projects, prototyping, and evaluation; it says closed-source commercial products or CI systems require a commercial license. Licensed enterprise builds add features such as BrowserQL, stealth, session recording, private deployments, and support.

The Docker documentation says the core image includes Puppeteer, Playwright, and REST APIs, and that versioned container tags are available. The Browserless OpenAPI reference was listed as version 2.56.7 when crawled in 2026; treat that as a dated reference, not a statement that it is the current version. Use the documentation for the exact image tag and API version you plan to deploy.

Screenshot-only jobs: try ScreenshotNeo before operating a browser

If you only need a website screenshot or PDF—not arbitrary interaction in a persistent browser session—try ScreenshotNeo first. It accepts one GET request for a URL and returns an image or PDF, which avoids setting up and maintaining your own browser for that narrow job. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a general replacement for Playwright-controlled browser sessions.

ScreenshotNeo documents 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, capture by CSS selector, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS rendering, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector waits, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, resizing, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, a usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. Set only the options your job needs, and consult the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.

Compare the alternatives by control, ownership, and cost

Option Best match Control model Who operates the browser infrastructure?
Browserbase Managed sessions and agent-oriented workflows Managed cloud browsers; supports Playwright and Puppeteer according to its pricing page Provider manages the service; buyer checks quotas and plan terms
Steel Managed automation with a self-hosting path Cloud sessions or open-source browser deployment Provider for cloud use; customer for self-hosting
ZenRows or Bright Data Browser API Scraping and protected access API or managed browser access; confirm session control and output fit Provider for managed offerings
Local Playwright or Puppeteer Control of runtime and deployment Direct framework control Customer
Self-hosted Browserless Browserless model inside owned infrastructure Browserless Docker image and APIs Customer; licensing conditions apply
ScreenshotNeo Screenshot or PDF from a URL One-request screenshot API; MCP tools also available Provider operates the API; no browser fleet to run for the capture

Only Browserbase’s entry-plan prices and quotas are stated here, because the cited material gives dated figures for those plans. The cited sources do not establish comparable current prices for Steel, ZenRows, Bright Data, local operation, or self-hosted deployments. For those choices, compare current published terms and estimate infrastructure and engineering costs rather than treating “free” source code as a zero-cost production service.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the output. Is it a screenshot, PDF, rendered HTML, structured data, or a multi-step browser outcome?
  2. Decide whether you need a session. If the task requires navigation, login state, repeated interactions, or debugging, favor a browser-control model. If it is one URL to one artifact, test a stateless API.
  3. Set the ownership boundary. Choose managed cloud, private deployment, self-hosting, or local execution based on network, residency, security, and operations needs.
  4. Map target-site constraints. List required geographies and the anti-bot, proxy, rendering, or CAPTCHA behavior that must be tested.
  5. Estimate peak load. For managed plans, compare concurrency, browser hours, session allowances, and any separate usage charges. For self-hosting, plan capacity and isolation.
  6. Check migration cost. Determine whether current Playwright, Puppeteer, or Selenium code can use a connection URL or requires an API rewrite. Test a representative workflow before moving everything.
  7. Review commercial and compliance terms. Verify licenses, data retention, private networking, SSO, audit needs, support, and any relevant data-location requirements with the provider.

Migration and evaluation without a costly rewrite

Start with one representative job rather than porting an entire automation system. Capture its inputs, expected output, page interactions, region, runtime, concurrency, and failure conditions. Then test the same job against the candidate’s control model: connect existing code to a managed browser if you need session control, or call a stateless endpoint if you only need an artifact.

For every run, record whether the page loaded, whether the desired output was produced, how long the job took in your environment, and what happened on failure. Include slow pages, redirects, pages that require JavaScript, and any login or consent flow your legitimate use requires. This is a local evaluation plan, not a provider benchmark; results apply to the target pages and conditions you tested.

Before migrating production traffic, verify retry behavior and avoid blindly retrying every failure. A timeout, blocked request, invalid selector, expired credential, and target-site change call for different fixes. Keep credentials out of logs, set concurrency conservatively, and add monitoring for empty or malformed outputs so a nominally successful request does not silently become bad data.

Common failure modes and what to check

  • The replacement returns content but cannot perform the needed workflow. You chose an extraction endpoint for a task that depends on interactive session control. Move that job to a managed browser connection or a framework deployment.
  • Concurrency limits block a launch. Compare peak simultaneous jobs with the plan’s stated allowance, queue excess work, or select a plan that supports the required concurrency. For self-hosting, check available browser capacity and machine resources.
  • A protected page still fails. A proxy or CAPTCHA feature is not a universal access guarantee. Check the target, region, request behavior, and provider’s supported workflow; test alternatives without assuming the same result across sites.
  • A migration breaks existing automation. Confirm the new service’s supported framework and connection method. Keep a minimal representative Playwright or Puppeteer test and resolve authentication, browser options, and session assumptions before changing application code.
  • Self-hosted deployment behaves differently from cloud. Check image tag and API version, network routes, browser dependencies, resource limits, and security configuration. Revisit licensing as well as operations if the deployment is commercial.
  • Costs do not match a headline plan price. Reconcile actual browser hours, concurrency needs, sessions, proxy charges, storage or retention, and engineering overhead. Recheck published terms because plan names and quotas change.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot or PDF, make one request instead of configuring a browser runtime. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you are authorized to capture and put your API key in place of the example value. See the API documentation for supported parameters and output settings.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python request:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js request:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor, then removed; the service also removes known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Each of these steps can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses indicate the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every listed feature is available on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Browserless the same thing as a scraping API?

No. Browserless includes browser-session products as well as stateless APIs. A scraping API may return content from a request without providing the same interactive control over a browser session.

Can I use self-hosted Browserless commercially?

Browserless states that its open-source Docker image is free for open-source projects, prototyping, and evaluation under SSPL-1.0, while closed-source commercial products or CI systems require a commercial license. Check the applicable license for your intended use.

Does a CAPTCHA-solving feature guarantee access to a protected site?

No. Capability descriptions do not establish a universal success rate. Results can depend on the site, region, and workflow, so validate access for your own legitimate use case.
