For a quick still image or short clip, use the capture tool built into your computer: Windows Snipping Tool or macOS Screenshot. For narration, desktop audio, webcam overlays, gameplay, or video from an external device, use OBS Studio. The right method depends on whether you need a still, a simple clip, or a recording with several inputs.
Choose the right screen capture method
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A quick screenshot on Windows | Snipping Tool | Offers freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen still captures. |
| A quick screenshot or basic recording on Mac | Screenshot | Built-in controls let you select an area or window for a still or recording. |
| A Windows video clip of one part of the screen | Snipping Tool video snip | Records a rectangular area without requiring a separate recording application. |
| Narration, desktop audio, webcam, gameplay, or capture-card video | OBS Studio | Lets you combine and select sources, then configure recording and audio. |
| A screenshot of a public webpage from a URL | ScreenshotNeo | A one-request website screenshot API and MCP server; it is for webpage captures, not recording your computer screen. |
Before you begin, decide whether you need a still, a short clip, or a full recording. For a tutorial or gameplay session, also decide which screen or window to capture and whether you need microphone, desktop, webcam, or external-device audio and video.
Take a screenshot in Windows
Capture a selected area
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the image capture overlay.
- Choose a capture mode and select the area, window, or screen to capture.
- Open the result in Snipping Tool to annotate, save, or share it.
Choose the right still-image mode
- Freeform: trace an irregular area.
- Rectangle: drag around a rectangular region.
- Window: capture a selected window rather than the entire desktop.
- Full screen: capture the full display.
For a full-screen image copied to the clipboard, press Print Screen. You can then paste it into an image editor, document, or message. Microsoft documents these Snipping Tool modes and shortcuts in its Snipping Tool guide.
Record a screen clip in Windows
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + R to start a Snipping Tool video snip.
- Select the rectangular area you want to record.
- Start recording, then stop when the clip is complete.
- Review the result in Snipping Tool, then save or share it.
This method is suited to a short capture of a specific screen region. The documented video snip captures a rectangular selection; if you need a production recording with configurable microphone, desktop audio, webcam, or gameplay sources, use OBS instead. Microsoft describes the video function as a way “to capture a video clip of a rectangular selection of any part of your screen” in its Snipping Tool guide.

Take screenshots and record on a Mac
macOS provides Screenshot controls through the Screenshot app and keyboard shortcuts. Open Screenshot, choose a still-image or screen-recording control, select the screen area or window where applicable, and start the capture. Stop the recording from the on-screen controls when you have finished.
Apple states that screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings as .mov files. Use the built-in tool for a simple capture; if your workflow needs scenes or a more involved collection of recording inputs, OBS offers more configuration. Consult Apple’s Take a screenshot on your Mac instructions for the controls and current shortcut details.
Record a tutorial, gameplay, or webcam with OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the better fit when a recording needs more than one basic screen selection. Its sources include Display Capture for a desktop, Window Capture for a single window, Game Capture on Windows, and Video Capture Source for webcams or capture cards. OBS also provides audio configuration for desktop sound and microphones. Source availability and behavior can differ by operating system; on macOS, the Screen Capture source supports a whole display, a single window, or visible windows for an application.

Set up a basic recording
- Install and open OBS Studio, then create or select a scene for the recording.
- In the Sources panel, add the source that matches your content: Display Capture for a desktop, Window Capture for an application window, or Game Capture for a Windows game. Add Video Capture Source for a webcam or capture card.
- Configure your microphone and desktop audio in OBS’s audio settings. Speak or play audio and confirm the audio meters move before recording.
- Set the output options for the recording in OBS. Choose settings that fit the destination and available storage; the source material does not prescribe a universal resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
- Check the preview and source selection, then make a short test recording and play it back.
- When the test looks and sounds right, press Start Recording. Press Stop Recording when done.
OBS explicitly recommends recording a short test before an important session rather than starting a first recording without checking for issues. Its Quick Start Guide covers sources, audio, output setup, and recording.

OBS’s Screen Capture source on macOS supports audio on macOS 13 and later. OBS documents more limited support on macOS 12.3–12.6. If desktop audio is essential, check the current OBS guidance for your macOS version and verify the meters and playback in a test before relying on the recording. See OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source documentation.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF through one GET request. It does not replace Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, or OBS for capturing desktop activity.

Check the capture area before starting
- For a still of one application on Windows, use Snipping Tool’s Window mode rather than selecting the whole screen.
- For a Windows clip of a specific region, use the rectangular video snip; for a whole desktop or a more complex layout, configure the corresponding OBS source.
- In OBS, make sure the preview shows the intended display, window, game, or external input before recording.
Confirm audio before the real take
If narration or desktop sound matters, select the intended microphone or audio input in OBS and check that the meters move while it is active. A moving meter is a useful setup check, but play back the test recording too: it confirms that audio actually made it into the file and that it is intelligible.

Give a long or important recording a test run
Record a few minutes, stop, and review the result before a presentation, tutorial, or gameplay session. Check the image, audio, chosen source, and saved file. This catches a wrong window, missing narration, or an unusable capture before the full session is over. OBS recommends this test-first approach in its Quick Start Guide.
Plan for storage and output needs
Recording settings affect the output file and the resources required to create it. Choose OBS output options with the intended destination and available storage in mind, and make a short test to judge whether the result is suitable. The cited guidance does not establish one best setting for every computer, recording, or destination, so avoid assuming a single resolution or bitrate will fit all cases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot includes more than the app you wanted | The full-screen or wrong capture mode was used. | Repeat with Snipping Tool’s Window mode on Windows, or select the intended area or window in macOS Screenshot. |
| The Windows recording captures the wrong region | The video snip is rectangular, and the selection did not match the target. | Start again with Windows + Shift + R and carefully drag the intended rectangle. |
| The OBS file has no narration | The microphone may not be selected or may not be receiving input. | Check OBS audio settings, speak into the selected microphone, confirm its meter moves, then record and play back a short test. |
| The OBS file has no desktop audio on a Mac | Audio support depends on macOS version; OBS states Screen Capture audio is available on macOS 13 and later with more limited support on 12.3–12.6. | Check OBS’s current macOS Screen Capture guidance for the installed system version, then verify the output in a test recording. |
| The webcam or HDMI feed does not appear | The matching video source may not have been added or selected. | Add a Video Capture Source for a webcam or capture card, then verify its preview before recording. |
| You are unsure whether the recording worked | The capture has not been reviewed. | Stop a brief test recording and play it back before the important session. |
Choose by task, not by habit
Use the built-in capture controls for quick stills and simple clips: Windows Snipping Tool provides several image modes and a rectangular video snip, while macOS Screenshot handles stills and recordings. Choose OBS when your recording depends on source selection, narration, desktop audio, webcam, gameplay, or an external capture device. For a webpage image from a URL rather than a recording of your desktop, ScreenshotNeo is the separate API option.
