Fast answer: Open the Twitter/X post or thread in Safari, take a normal screenshot, tap its preview, choose Full Page if that option appears, then save the result as an image or PDF. Apple documents this workflow for webpages such as Safari pages. If the thread is only available inside the X app and Full Page is missing, use a scrolling-capture or stitching app such as Picsew.
What “long screenshot” means on an iPhone
A long screenshot (also called a full-page screenshot or Twitter thread screenshot) combines content that extends below the visible display into one capture. On iPhone, the built-in method is designed for supported page-like content rather than every app. Safari webpages are Apple’s documented example, so opening an X link in Safari gives you the best chance of seeing the Full Page control.

The current X app can change its interface, and the available sources do not establish that Full Page appears in every embedded or third-party view. Treat the option as conditional: use it when iOS shows it, and switch to an app-based workaround when it does not.
Native method: capture an X thread in Safari
- Open the post or thread in Safari. Use the share menu in X to copy the post link, then open that link in Safari, or navigate directly to the public X webpage. Wait for the text, images and other content you need to load. If the thread uses lazy loading, scroll through it once so the relevant sections are present before taking the screenshot.
- Take a normal screenshot. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Open the screenshot preview. Tap the thumbnail that appears briefly in the lower-left corner. If iOS supports a page capture for what you are viewing, the editor will show a Full Page tab alongside the ordinary screen capture.
- Select Full Page. Review the tall preview and use the crop controls if you want to remove browser chrome or unrelated sections. The preview is a page capture, not merely a stretched copy of one screen.
- Save the result. Use the available save action to store the capture as an image in Photos or as a PDF in Files. A PDF is usually easier to search, print or send as a document; an image is more convenient for posting or messaging.
Apple’s support instructions and its July 8, 2021 video describe this process for a full Safari page, including sharing or saving the result as a PDF. They do not promise that the same control appears inside every third-party app.

Why Full Page may not appear
You are still in the X app
The native instructions establish support for page-like content, with Safari as the example, not universal support in the X app. If the screenshot editor offers only the usual Screen view, copy the post URL and open it in Safari. Check the preview again there.
The content has not loaded
X can load replies, images and media as you scroll. A capture can only include what the webpage has rendered. Let the page settle, scroll through the part you need, and then repeat the screenshot. Do not assume that a thread’s entire history was fetched merely because the first post is visible.
The page is an app-only view
Some content may require the X app, an account, or an interaction that Safari cannot reproduce. In that case, use the scrolling workflow below. Do not promise yourself a native Full Page file when the content never exists as a Safari webpage.

Workaround for content that must remain in the X app
Picsew is an optional third-party approach documented for two situations: recording a controlled scroll to create a scrollshot, or stitching screenshots you already captured. Its App Store listing describes the app as free with in-app purchases; pricing and availability can change by region and over time.
Scrolling capture with Picsew
- Install and open Picsew, then follow its instructions to enable screen recording.
- In the iPhone recording controls, choose Picsew as the broadcast destination.
- Return to the X app and open the post, thread or profile you want to preserve.
- Start the capture and scroll steadily through the content. Move slowly enough that adjacent frames share visible text or image area.
- Stop the recording, open Picsew, and view the completed scrollshot. Trim unwanted areas before exporting.
Picsew’s documentation warns that insufficient overlap can make automatic capture fail. Its FAQ also says that roughly the height of two lines of text should overlap between screenshots for stitching. The developer notes that HDR screen recordings may look darker when converted to still images.
Stitching screenshots you already have
- Capture successive screens in the X app, keeping the phone position and zoom level consistent.
- Make sure every neighboring image contains an overlapping region. Repeated text lines, a corner of an image or another distinctive detail gives the stitcher something to match.
- In Picsew, select the screenshots in order, let it align the overlaps, inspect the joins, and export one long image.
Stitching is useful when recording-based scrolling is unavailable, but it is more sensitive to abrupt jumps, duplicated content and missing overlap than the Safari Full Page method.

Troubleshooting checklist
Only a normal screenshot is available
- Open the X link in Safari rather than the X app.
- Confirm you are viewing a webpage, not an app-only screen.
- Let the page finish loading and take the screenshot again.
The full capture stops early
- Scroll through lazy-loaded sections before capturing.
- Check the Full Page preview for the point where content ends; the webpage may not have loaded anything beyond it.
- For app-only content, use slow scrolling with overlap and stitch the resulting frames.
The stitched image has jumps or duplicated text
- Capture with a steady pace and keep the same zoom level.
- Leave approximately two lines of text visible in adjacent frames, as Picsew’s FAQ recommends.
- Remove a bad frame and recapture that section instead of trying to hide a seam with aggressive cropping.

Privacy, permissions and sharing
A screenshot preserves whatever is visible, including usernames, replies, profile details and private messages accidentally left on screen. Crop or redact sensitive information before sharing. For a server-side capture, use only URLs and authentication data you are authorized to access; custom cookies, headers and Authorization values should not be exposed in client-side code or public links.
For a quick share, an image is usually the practical choice. For an archive, searchable document or printout, save the native Full Page capture as a PDF. If you need repeatable captures of public pages rather than a one-time phone image, the API workflow avoids manual scrolling and can be scheduled or run in bulk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a private X post with the Safari Full Page tool?
Only if the page is available to the signed-in browser session and iOS exposes Full Page for that view; the documented workflow does not make private content accessible to other people. For an API capture, use a URL and credentials you are authorized to use.
Which format is better for an archived thread?
Use PDF when you need a document that is easy to search, print or store in Files. Use an image when the destination is Photos, messaging or a social post.
What information helps diagnose a failed long capture?
Record whether you used Safari, the X app, Picsew or an API; note whether Full Page appeared, where the capture stopped, and whether the page required login or continued loading while you scrolled.
